new option suggestion '--backup-only'
Hi, How about adding now option '--backup-only' that means making backups only and don't change any destination files? (I posted similar patch a month ago, but the patch was made for nightly snapshot of 20020808, which was tooo old! Laugh at me...) I want to use rsync with LVM snapshot to make incremental backups like below: 1) Make LVM snapshot of file system and mount it.

.rsync-/.rsync+ patch and --link-dest example
This is a patch to add an --rsync-exclude option to rsync-2.5.6cvs. File names in .rsync- (or .rsync+) are excluded (or included) from the file lists associated with the current directory and all of its subdirectories. This has advantages over --cvs-exclude for backing up large file systems since the .cvsignore files only apply to the current directory: unless the .cvsignore restrictions apply

rsync option for continuing event i/o errors occured on remove server
Hello, I search a way to continue processing backup event i/o errors occured on the remote server. I use rsync to make backup of files on a files-server. Recently I had a corrupted file on the files-server and rysnc crash, and don't continue to backup the rest of files. I have found the --ignore-errors rsync option but it seems only about deleting action. On backup server I use this

rsync process never finishes
Hi, I've got a Debian 3.0 machine from which I initiate rsync connections over ssh to winNT/2k boxen, where sshd is running as a service, to grab files from the windows machines. I don't get any error from either side of the connection. The directory I indicate is transferred as well as every sub directory, just not any of the files in the sub directories. The process seems to be running

IPv6 literal addresses on command line
Hello all, Can anyone give me a hint on how to specify an IPv6 address in an rsync address literal - the colon character is already used to seperate the host name from the remote directory AFAICT... I get, e.g. rsync -Cavb 3ffe:502:420:120::2:/home/cam/dev/proj 3ffe: Unknown host rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes read so far) rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code

"error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(150)" revisited
I browsed the web and the archive, and apart from someone asking whether anyone else had rsync problems after installing OpenSSH 3.4, I came up empty. Can anyone point me in the right direction to debug this? I've got over 50 GB to keep in sync, and don't know of another elegant way to do it. Environment: source system = bb: - Linux version 2.4.7-10smp

rsync hangs in 'send_files starting'
Hi all, I am new to this list. I have a problem trying to mirror a cvs repository. I suspect the error happens when getting a directory containing many files. I did a test by creating 200 5k files in a directory named tmp, but It hangs after building file list. When I try to run it with -vvv: $ rsync -essh -avvvz cheepy@gateway.internet4u.com.au:tmp . This is the end of the printout (before

BUG: read: Invalid argument
I'm attempting to mirror a directory tree from debian stable (rsync version 2.5.6cvs) to a win2k box (cygwin, rsync version 2.5.5). This setup/command had previously worked for a bit (cygwin at rsync version 2.4.6 AFAICR), but yesterday it hung, so, finding some mail-list entries about that, I upgraded cygwin, and now I get this: C:\>c:\cygwin\bin\rsync.exe -vvvvvv -essh -ac --delete

Possible UID/GID bug in chrooted shells?
I'm stuck on a problem with rsync... We've got a chrooted shell with rsync and all the needed libs inside (and not much else). We're using rsync over ssh to send the files into this chrooted session. The rsync binary in the chrooted session is SUID root so that it can create the files with the correct UID/GID. When the following is run, it creates all the files as root.staff, not

Is there anyway to fix large file support?
I got Large files working fine on Solaris, just make a 64bit binary :). Seriously, I would try making a 64bit binary for HPUX as well(something like +DA2.0W for 64bit PA_RISC). Pipelining arbitrary file transfers + --{in,ex}clude oddness
I'd like to rsync a series of files at arbitrary points in a tree in one connection and am struggling to figure out how to do this. rsync seems AFAICS to have a fundamental src_file dst_file model, optionally with recursion. The best I could come up with was recursing plus multiple --include with a final --exclude "*". The idea is to avoid multiple calls to rsync and thus

bad hardlinks with rsync
Hi List I've experienced some problems with rsync. I'm backuping a complete machine's rootdirectory. After completion I see in the log of the output, that rsync links some files which are surely *not* the same on the source System. Or well, it says, that it makes links, using the filename1 => filename2 notation. On the source System this files are not the same and some files are

Speed problem
Mermgfurt ! I have some problem with syncing two machines which are connected over a Gigabit-connection. I'm trying to use rsync with ssh because of the authorisation mechanisms (keys). It starts quite ok with 18 MB/s (this small speed may have something to do with our internal net) and falls down to 400 KB/s (!!!). This happens over a long period because those files I want to copy are very

Rsync performance increase through buffering
I've been studying the read and write buffering in rsync and it turns out most I/O is done just a couple of bytes at a time. This means there are lots of system calls, and also most network traffic comprises lots of small packets. The behavior is most extreme when sending/receiving file deltas of identical files. The main case where I/O is buffered is writes from the server (when io

Losing hope.
Is it normal for rsync 2.5.5 to keep locking up on large HP/UX 11.0 files? I am not talking about a delay here, but locking up and never returning w/error. Anybody have any suggestions?
