ZFS root ARC memory usage on VxFS system...
Hi Folks.. We have started to convert our Veritas clustered systems over to ZFS root to take advantage of the extreme simplification of using Live Upgrade. Moving the data of these systems off VxVM and VxFS is not in scope for reasons to numerous to go into.. One thing my customers noticed immediately was a reduction in "free" memory as reported by ''top''. By way

Reg: Porting UFS/VxFs to ext2 (fwd)
Hello Gurus, Greetings. I have been assigned some work on the development of a migration tool. The requirement is that it has to migrate the data on a UFS/VxFs filesystem to an ext2 filesystem. What are the technical apects I will have to look into to achieve the same? Is it possible to change the on-disk structure of the UFS/VxFs filesystem to an ext2 filesystem? The question may

DBWR write performance
I''m an Oracle DBA, a dtrace noob, and I''m attempting to resolve an Oracle write performance problem on Solaris 10, Oracle 9iR2. The Oracle DBWR processes have poor write throughput writing to VxFS files. I suspect that the problem may be with POSIX readers/writer file locking. Ideally I''d like to identify, for a given DBWR process, readers/writer file lock contention

ZFS write time performance question
HI, The question is a ZFS performance question in reguards to SAN traffic. We are trying to benchmark ZFS vx VxFS file systems and I get the following performance results. Test Setup: Solaris 10: 11/06 Dual port Qlogic HBA with SFCSM (for ZFS) and DMP (of VxFS) Sun Fire v490 server LSI Raid 3994 on backend ZFS Record Size: 128KB (default) VxFS Block Size: 8KB(default) The only thing

Can DTrace display non-instrumented function argument counts and types?
Is it possible to use DTrace to display the number of arguments and their types for userland or kernel functions that are not explicitly instrumented or documented by their authors? We''re talking about functions provided by Veritas VxVM/VxFS and the like, and for example, we might want to try tracing I/Os from App => VxFS => VxVM => ssd driver to see where I/Os get aggregated or

Oracle on ZFS vs. UFS
Hi, I''m preparing a personal TPC-H benchmark. The goal is not to measure or optimize the database performance, but to compare ZFS to UFS in similar configurations. At the moment I''m preparing the tests at home. The test setup is as follows: . Solaris snv_37 . 2 x AMD Opteron 252 . 4 GB RAM . 2 x 80 GB ST380817AS . Oracle 10gR2 (small SGA (320m)) The disks also contain the OS

ZFS versus VxFS as file system inside Netbackup 6.0 DSSU
Hello experts, We have a large implementation of Symantec Netbackup 6.0 with disk staging. Today, the customer is using VxFS as file system inside Netbackup 6.0 DSSU (disk staging). The customer would like to know if it is best to use ZFS or VxFS as file system inside Netbackup disk staging in order to get the best performance possible. Could you provide some information regarding this

ZFS and Oracle db production deployment
Hello ! Can you please share your experiences with ZFS deployment for Oracle databases for production usage ? Why did you choose to deploy the database on ZFS ? What features of ZFS are you using ? What tuning was done during ZFS setup ? How big are the databases ? Thank you, Jay

Dump Analysis -- when NCR server frozen by rsync
Hi, rsync was running against filesystems /disk5 and /disk7 to back them onto remote server (172.16.101.4) using the following script: if [ `ps -ef | grep -v grep | grep ::d5 | /usr/bin/wc -l` -eq 0 ] then rm -f /etc/rsync5.log echo " --- Disk5 --- starts `date`" > /etc/rsync5.log /usr/local/bin/rsync -a --recursive --compress /disk5/ 172.16.101.4::d5 >> /etc/rsync.log echo

Rsync 4TB datafiles...?
I need to rsync 4 TB datafiles to remote server and clone to a new oracle database..I have about 40 drives that contains this 4 TB data. I would like to do rsync from a directory level by using --files-from=FILE option. But the problem is what will happen if the network connection fails the whole rsync will fail right. rsync -a srchost:/ / --files-from=dbf-list and dbf-list would contain this:

Yet another zfs vs. vxfs comparison...
Hi, sorry if I am brining up old news, but I couldn''t find a good answer searching the previous posts (My mom always says I am bad with finding things :) However I noticed a difference when creating a zfs filesystem compared with a vxfs filesystem in the available size. ie. ZFS zonedata/zfs 392G 120G 272G 31% /zfs VxFS /dev/vx/dsk/zonedg/zonevol

Working with large datafiles
Hi, I have been enjoying r for some time now, but was wondering about working with larger data files. When I try to load in big files with more than 20,000 records, the programs seems unbable to store all the records. Is there some way that I can increase the size of records that I work with? Ideally I would like to work with census data which can hold a million records. Greg

ZFS and VXVM/VXFS
We are looking at the alternatives to VXVM/VXFS. One of the feature which we liked in Veritas, apart from the obvious ones is the ability to call the disks by name and group them in to a disk group. Especially in SAN based environment where the disks may be shared by multiple machines, it is very easy to manage them by disk group names rather than cxtxdx numbers. Does zfs offer such

There are several configuration and data files stored on the server and shared via nfs to solaris and aix clients. The application is crashing on the aix client except the server is sharing those files from a ufs

Using rsync for buidling Oracle standbys.
Hi, We currently use rsync to create an Oracle standby on a target box from an existing standby by copying all the datafiles while the source standby is in recovery status. We are occasionally running into datafile corruptions being reported by oracle when it is recovering the new standby. Oracle support says they don't recommend copying files while the changes being applied to them unless

zfs and jbod-storage
Hi. I''m managing a HDS storage system which is slightly larger than 100 TB and we have used approx. 3/4. We use vxfs. The storage system is attached to a solaris 9 on sparc via a fiberswitch. The storage is shared via nfs to our webservers. If I was to replace vxfs with zfs I could utilize raidz(2) instead of the built-in hardware raid-controller. Are there any jbod-only storage
