Fiddling with software RAID1 : continue working with one of two disks failing?
Hi,
I'm currently experimenting with software RAID1 on a spare PC with two
40 GB hard disks. Normally, on a desktop PC with only one hard disk, I
have a very simple partitioning scheme like this :
/dev/hda1 80 MB /boot ext2
/dev/hda2 1 GB swap
/dev/hda3 39 GB / ext3
Here's what I'd like to do. Partition a second hard disk (say, /dev/hdb)
with three

best practice backup
Hi there,
I am using tar to backup the whole system (specific directorues usr, lib, sbin, etc, var, home, root).
On bare metal recovery I install the minimal portion of the syetm and then I throw the tarballs.
Any opinions?

Upgrading to larger HD with LVM
What's the easiest way to transition to a larger HD when using LVM2? I'm
running Centos 4.4. I'm going from a 20gb HD to a 40gb HD. I've already
DD'd it to the 40gb HD. So now I have 20gb of unused space. Ideally, I'd
like to make it one big physical space for the logical space instead of
making another physical partition to expand the logical. Here is what I
have now

ext3 + external journal -- Howto..
I am new to ext3 + external journal. Is there any howto I can look at?
this is what I understand
1. mke2fs -O journal_dev /dev/md5
2. mke2fs -J device=/dev/md5 /dev/md0
3. mount /dev/md0 / -t ext3 ( hmm.. what do I need to put on fstab?? )
/dev/md5 is a two drive RAID 1 partition
/dev/md0 is a 4 drive RAID 5 partition.

trouble booting the system with I2O hardware RAID
I've just made (yet another) CentOS 4 installation. The install process
seems to go fine, however the machine doesn't wan't to boot.
The system in question has one of I2O Adaptec RAID controllers. I've
configured LVM with one volume group and several volumes. If I boot
into the rescue mode, all looks fine and dandy. Anaconda finds the
installation, and I can access all

Announcing EXT2FS lib for syslinux
Here is the initial release:
git://github.com/donhiatt/Syslinux-EXT2FS-Library-port.git
I am very new to git so I hope I managed to get the repo setup properly.
The repo is branched from 'disklib' as I plan to use it for all disk
read/write access (I'm currently using modified gpllib/disk/* -- see
README).
Cheers,

Getting ext3 up and running
I have a Debian system from a Knoppix distribution. I started out with ext2
but decided to change to ext3.
tune2fs -j OK.
However the system boots with a warning ....ext3 mounted as ext2.
proc/mounts confirms this and no journal is running.
So I have to make an initrd. Did so using instructions in the Debian Reference
and this did not change anything. Any attempt to use the img produced was a

Accents in filenames on vfat filesystem
Hello.
I am trying to create a text file that contains an accent like '?' in it's
filename on a vfat filesystem. This generates an error like the following:
"test?.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing
I have made a 'modprobe nls_cp850' and 'modprobe nls_iso8859-1' to load
those needed modules.
Then I mounted my FAT32 partition like this:
mount -t

XP: VBD could not connect to backend device: USB boot
Hi:
we have following setup:
1. 2.6.16-33-based Xen 3.0.3/Xen-3.0.4 DOM-0 kernels.
2. Using LILO-mbootpack from USB we boot Xen-->DOM-0 setup
3. We mount harddisk and try to install xp.hvm
While,we are successful with FCs as DOM-U, for XP we get, VBD (768)
could not be connected.
We do have max_loop count to 64 and enough loop devices.
Note that above error is consistent on both 3.0.3

question on software raid-1
I have a system that is RAID -1 configured as
/dev/md0 is /dev/hda1 /dev/hdb1
/dev/md1 is /dev/hdb3 /dev/hdb3
it seems as though /dev/hda has failed....
I have another disk (identical model) that I can replace hda with.
I know about the commands fdisk to repartion and raidhotadd /dev/md0
/dev/hda1
and raidhotadd /dev/md1 /dev/hda3 (to be ran after the system boots).
BUT... how do I now get

Copying my system to another drive
Hi, I'm trying to copy my CentOS install to a new drive.
- old drive is /dev/hda and had
hda1 : /boot
hda2 : swap
hda3 lvm
hda5 : lvm
hda4 : /usr/local
- new drive is /dev/hdb
hdb1 : /boot
hdb2 : swap
hdb3 : /
I decided to get rid of lvm which is useless to me. I've created and
formated the new partitions and copied anything from the old drive to

Hi there:
> ps: my little suggestion: if we add some parameters at smb.conf like

It seems that implementation of such parameter has some difficulties and
eventuates reduction on performance (e.g. handling "protected dir"s and
"trash dir" on the different devices like /dev/hda1

ext3 kernel 2.4.13
Hello everyone,
I'm new to the list and I hope I'm not repeating something that was
already asked for.
I had been using the stock kernel that came with Mandrake 8.1 which is
kernel 2.4.8-26mdk (not sure what things are applied to a stock 2.4.8)
I have my root partition /dev/hda1 on ext3 Mandrake took care of all
this, by putting the ext3 module in initrd.
I just dl'ed 2.4.13

help! error in creating a new domain
Maybe this question is a little stupid, but please help me. I am a newbie
to Xen.
When I tried to create a new domain "domain 1", I followed the Yan-Ching
CHU''s guide on :installing quick file systems for new domains in Xen 1.2".
But when I do "xc_dom_create.py -Dvmid=1", Xen seems to start to boot with
some normal bootup information, but right after several
