[patch] exclude-from stdin
This patch causes --exclude-from and --include-from to read
from STDIN when given - for a filename.
This was formerly incorporated in my --link-dest patch.
Patch against current cvs.

Regular Expression support
I have added regular expression support using a POSIX implementation.
The patch (against 2.5.5) is attached.
The implementation is simple and follows the same mechanism that is
implemented for normal searches.
I added these command line arguments:
--rexclude=PATTERN exclude files matching regexp PATTERN
--rexclude-from=FILE exclude regexp patterns listed in FILE
--rinclude=PATTERN

.rsync-/.rsync+ patch and --link-dest example
This is a patch to add an --rsync-exclude option to rsync-2.5.6cvs.
File names in .rsync- (or .rsync+) are excluded (or included) from the file
lists associated with the current directory and all of its subdirectories.
This has advantages over --cvs-exclude for backing up large file systems
since the .cvsignore files only apply to the current directory:
unless the .cvsignore restrictions apply

Exclude sets generated with -C
Hi guys,
I recently stumbled across what I think is an rsync bug. The problem
was I was trying to rsync from one CVS checkout, to another, and was
using rsync -Cavz to do the job. In this CVS module, there happens to
be two sub-directories with the names of "core" and "tags"
respectively, which were ignored, since these names matched the
default CVS ignore list.
When rsync

[PATCH][RFC] space saving incrementals
Please CC me directly as i'm not on the list.
I have attached a patch against latest CVS (cvs diff -u)
that adds the following functionality. I can break it up if
you would prefer it in pieces. Comments welcome.
o add compare-perms option
This creates a new inode for a file even if only
the perms have changed. This way if a file
outside of destdir is hardlinked to a dentry

Differentiating debug messages from both sides
Some of the debug messages that rsync outputs (when verbose >= 2) can
occur on both sides of the connection. This makes it hard to know which
program is saying what. Some debug messages deal with this by
outputting a "[PID]" string at the start of the message. Unfortunately,
the startup message that tells us which pid is which is only output when
verbose >= 3, so there's a

[PATCH] --link-dest option
Please CC me. I'm not subscribed.
Attached is a patch against 2.5.4pre1 CVS current to add the
--link-dest option so rsync will create hardlinks for
unchanged regular files to a directory on the destination.
This is like --compare-dest except that the result is not a
sparse tree.
Also included is extension to --(ex|in)clude-from to allow -
for stdin.
Could one of the maintainers please add

include/exclude bug in rsync 2.6.0/2.6.1pre1
As mentioned on the rsync home page, the --files-from=FILE option in rsync
version 2.6.0 is a useful option that allows one to "specify a list of
files to transfer, and can be much more efficient than a recursive descent
using include/exclude statements (if you know in advance what files you want to
transfer)".
However, --files-from does not help one implement the --rsync-exclude=FILE

about rsyncing of block devices
Hiya,
I can see it's a regular subject on this list.
I, like others wanted to use rsync to synchronise two block
devices (as it happens one lvm volume and one nbd device served
by qemu-img on a remote host from a qcow2 disk image so that I
can keep the old versions)
As I couldn't find any report of it being done successfully,
I'm just sharing my findings as it might benefit others.

patch for linux capabilities
I was wondering if it might be possible for an rsync developer to
look over the attached patch (tested on Linux 2.4.24 against the
rsync-2.6.0 release), and offer suggestions on how I could improve it.
Basically I want to use Linux finer grained capabilities to retain
only CAP_SYS_CHROOT & CAP_DAC_READ_SEARCH when rsync drops root
privs. That way I can take whole system backups as a (mostly)

rsync not reporting diskfull error
I am involved with the development of lbackup. This message to the rsync mailing list is related to the following thread on the lbackup-disccussion mailing list : http://tinyurl.com/lbackup-discussion-diskfull
Essentially, I am curious to if any one using rsync 3.0.7 on Mac OS (10.6) Server has experienced an out of disk space error and not had a message similar to the following reported :

PATCH: --write-devices to allow synchronising to a block device
Hi List,
I had a need recently to efficiently synchronise between some large LUNs
(boot drive disks) at two different datacentres. Solutions like drbd and
$proprietary_array_vendors_software were overkill - we only needed
(wanted!) to periodically synchronise these LUNs whenever major changes
were generated on the source. On the other hand however, re-sending the
entire disk contents each time

mixed case file systems.
I am having trouble with rsync when I am trying to synchronize a Windows NT
volume mounted with smb_fs (FreeBSD) and a unix volume which is also exported
with Samba.
There are instances where the DOS short name on the NT volume ends up as upper
case and then doesn't match filenames which are used in the unix volumes which
have been exported by Samba. I don't know if this is a Samba

FADV_DONTNEED support
While going through an old todo list I found that these patches had fallen by
the way-side. About a year ago I initiated a discussion[1] with the Linux
kernel folks regarding the lack of any useable fadvise support on the kernel
side. As a result, I was observing extremely poor performance on my server
after backup as executable pages were being swapped out in favor of data
waiting to be flushed

[patch] NFSv4/ZFS ACLs
This is a PoC patch for NFSv4/ZFS ACLs.
The objective of the patch is that rsync --acls support NFSv4/ZFS ACLs
without requiring a new command line option
NFSv4 ACLs can't be represented using POSIX draft ACLs, if an NFSv4 ACL is
present a separate POSIX draft ACL will not be present and there are new
APIs
to access NFSv4 ACLs. So we need to distinguish between NFSv4 ACLs and
POSIX

The security.evm extended attribute is fully owned by the Linux kernel

skip it.

small security-related rsync extension
Included below is a shar archive containing two patches that together:
1) make backup files get their setuid and setgid bits stripped by
default
2) add a "-s" option that allows backup files to continue to have
these privileges
This means that if you update a collection of binaries with rsync, and
one or more of them has a local-root security problem, the backup
file(s) created when
