rsyncd treats symlinks differently
I have an administrative server that I use to rsync data between two
hosts. It has root access to our fileserver but does not mount
directories using the same paths as a client machine. In some
directories I have symbolic links that are invalid on the admin server,
but valid on a client (due to automounter magic). When I use command
line rsync, all is well. When I converted to using rsyncd,

rsyncd 2.5.6 still treats sysmlinks differently
With much hope I upgraded to rsync version 2.5.6 in hopes that it would
correct the symbolic link bug I have been wrestling with...
No dice. It still insists on dropping the leading slash from a symbolic
link outside the source tree. Interactively it still works fine, but as
a daemon it's busted.
See previous posting 'rsyncd treats symlinks differently' for details.

Rsync sequence
Hi all,
I am running Ubuntu server 10.04 and use rsync to do all my backups. I would
like to backup multiple directories to my external hard drive, but I am
faced with a problem on how to set up crontab -e to allow each rsync
statement to perform one after the other. Right now I have each one set to
run on different nights, but I would like them all to run the same night to
allow for a more

How to manage the form of a model that has two foreign keys
Hi,
Basically I have two models: User and Godfather. The godfather table
has three columns:
- user_id (FK --> User)
- user_godfather_id (FK --> User)
- description (text)
Inside each model class, I am adding the following associations:
class User < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :godfathers # for user_id
has_many :godfathers, :foreign_key =>

read.xls question
Hello,
I've been using: tmp.df = read.xls(filename, stringsAsFactors = FALSE) to read in my files. Even though I get the "There were 50 or more warnings" thing, for the most part most of the data is read in correctly. However, there are a few select rows where there are values but they are being read in as NA. I copy and pasted those rows to their own individual xls file and

Modules from a newer kernel with older kernel?
Is it possible to use driver modules from Fedora 7 with CentOS 5?
That is to say, modules from a kernel version 2.6.21 with a kernel version
2.6.18.
I would like to try libata.ko, ata_piix.ko and some other with the kernel I
am using with CentOS 5.
Will it be safe?
Thank you!

rsync -u gets the older symlinks over the newer one
Hi,
I am facing with the bug followed:
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4531
rsync will always get the older symlink of the other side overwrite
the newer one on the local side.
Wayne has suggested to use unison, however it is a non-developing old
project that I have suspect to use.
What can you suggest me for ?
My main aim is to syncronize file, directories, links for 2 nodes.

Actually, there is a GUI management program in the nVidia driver suite.
Unfortunately, by the way X works, some of these

Correct. But in select operations, you are seeing this.
That could be an application-specific setting, including the Window
Manager which includes a number

Yep, it's the first of a new series (7000 -- sounds like it'll support
NV5x out-of-the-box), so that's expected.

Hmmm, interesting to see both Fast Writes and Side Band

older distro have newer package in base repo
Just wondering why in EL5's base repo the latest supported mysql
package is 5.5 and in EL6's base repo it is 5.1? Seems strange to me.
(it is clear that the SCL of EL6 has version 5.5 but that implies a
different update policy).

Is there a way to prevent an accidental migration from newer version of app to older one?
Imagine a rails app that has two versions that developers need to support:
1.0 and 2.0. There are 2 database schemas: app-1, app-2.
After fixing a bunch of very important bugs in production (1.0), some
junior developer named Bob switches the branch to 2.0 to implement a few
features but somehow gets his app connected to the schema app-1 and does
rake db:migrate
As I understand, in that case

Data Mining in Europe, please advise
Our CEO, Dr. Dan Steinberg, is planning to visit Europe in May. He
would like the opportunity to introduce statisticians (and statistically
minded people) to data mining, data mining applications and to forefront
data mining tools. Our algorithms are probably familiar to many
statisticians (CART, MARS, MART, TreeNet and RandomForests), although it
isn't necessary to be a statistician to

In Windows or Linux? And by "all agp features are installed correctly,"
what do you mean and how are you getting this?

Yum update wants to overwrite newer app package
This is probably a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway (I do that - you all
know... :-).
Due to a bug I found in OOo 2.0, I moved to using OOo 2.3, back when I was
still running CentOS 5.0.
Now that I have upgraded to 5.1, yum wants to update my OOo from 2.3 BACK to
2.0.
Is it possible to get yum to recognize that 2.3 is newer than 2.0, or should
I just exclude OOo from the updates?
Thanks.

How to use getCenter
Hi,
I am starting to use Mapstraction with the openlayers provider, and I am not
sure how to retrieve the current center of a map in a cross-provider way.
i.e. currently when calling map.getCenter(), the result returned is the
openlayers internal one, not the long/lat used when calling setCenter().
Is that the expected behaviour?
Regards,
Philippe

Rake (default task) overwrites development database?

development database would be effected?
