rsync not copying owner/group on some files
I am trying to use rsync 2.4.6 to try creating a backup using another locally connected hard disk. Thing copy, but sometimes the group is eith numeric (valid). Often the owner is not even shown. This is the command I use for rsync: rsync-2.4.6/rsync -arxlHpogDt /usr/ /backup/usr/ --delete I login as root. Any help would be appreciated. -- Ian Kettleborough ian@idk.com

Why does one of there work and the other doesn't
I was planning to use rsync to backup to a second drive, but I ran out of swap space. No problem, I will let rsync do it a few directories at a time overnight when the computer usually sits idle except for incomming email. I have 2 question: 1. How much memory does each file to be copied need. Obvisiouly I have too many files. 2. Why does this command work: rsync -ax /usr/xx /backup/usr/

Exclude directories
I am trying to exclude a few directories from being copied to a 2nd local hard disk. I have read the doc's, used the --exclude-from= to specify the filename.. but What confuses me is whether a directory listed in this file should have a trailing / on it or is the file completely different fro what I think it is. ie: /usr/src or /usr/src/ Thanks Ian

rsync "exclude-from"
Hi - I want to use rsync in combination with a list of files it should exclude, but somewhere I seem to have a problem. The problem is that the files and directories I list in the file to be excluded are in fact synchronized on the remote server. I should add that they are not present on the remote server and shall not, thus, excluding them from synchronization. :) The "exclude file"

working on a 2.5.6pre1 release
I'm working on trying to get rsync 2.5.6pre1 available for people to test more widely. I'm out of time for today, and I'm stuck on a problem that some machines on build.samba.org are showing on the 'chgrp' test. I can reproduce this on my home redhat 7.3 system too. It appears to be a timing problem because when I do strace -F -f on it the problem goes away. Everything seems

rsync logging and permission problems
Dear rsync people, I have just started using rsync for backups. I have had a couple of issues. Note I'm trying to use rsync as user using ssh between two machines both running Debian GNU/Linux potato (2.2r3). The local machine is currently running 2.4.6-1 and the remote 2.3.2-1.2. 1) When I run rsync with the vv option, stuff scrolls of my screen faster than I can read it. I was wondering if

--exclude and --delete-exclude problem
Hi. I'm trying to accomplish the following ; 1) First, I did a rsync for a file, like this /usr/bin/rsync -lptgoD --delete --rsh=/usr/bin/ssh -R --delete-excluded -vv root@127.0.0.1:/usr/local/src/* /tmp/localhost/daily.0 If I did a ls -la to the destination dir (/tmp/localhost/daily.0/usr/local/src/README) I take ls -la /tmp/localhost/daily.0/usr/local/src/ total 60 drwxrwsr-x 2 root

Generating cpio list.
One of the things I want to do besides mirror a hard drive is maintain an incremental backup on tape. The way for me to do this ( of course ) is to take the output of rsync and use it to generate a list of files for cpio. The basic ideal is something like this declare -i head tail # gets the first line with total: at the begining head=$(grep -n ^total: $log_rsync|awk -F: '{print $1}')

[patch] suggestions for -v option
The attached patch makes two changes to the behavior of the -v option: 1) The initial "building file list ... done" and the last two lines with transfer statistics are moved to verbose level 2, which means that you have to specify -vv to see them. When I use -v, I only want to see which files are being updated. Perhaps the statistics could be controlled by a separate option,

rsync 2.5.5 - Utilizing "exclude from" in rsync.conf
I am attempting to utilize the exclude from option in my rsync configuration file (rather than maintain lists on users machines) but it does not appear to be working. One example, I placed *.mp3 in the file to keep them from syncing mp3 files to the server and jamming up space. But rsync just seems to ignore this and syncs the files anyway without any errors to the syslog. All of my

Handling of backup files - two new features proposed
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Dear list members, there are two new rsync-features I made up and would like to discuss with you. If you think these new features might be useful for the whole rsync-community, please give me a note and I'll send you the patches (or post them here). 1.) Setting owner and/or group of backup files. In our servers I'm using rsync to backup

date of new directories
Does rsync-2.5.5 (and ealier versions) seems to have a problem with an open socket? I finally figured out which socket to exclude. Now I get an mknod error message the first time I run rsync and the second time it runs to completion. I did know of a netstat (I think) that would show the open sockets, but I have to admit I forget.. Anyway..any ideas? Running Freebsd 4.4. Thanks Ian

Using --link-dest works on small directory tree but not large one
I'm using version 2.6.3 on OS X. I'm trying to use --link-dest to keep some rolling backups of production websites. There is about 2GB of data in 60,000 total files. I do an initial rsync to get an initial copy of the data, and each day thereafter I run rsync again with --link-dest to create a new daily backup. For some reason, in the subsequent runs, rsync updates a whole lot of files

rsync with --exclude files
HI, I'm trying to exclude some files & directories from a filesystem which I would like to copy to a different site. I did: # rsync -avz --exclude-file=/fs21/tmp/perl_scripts/exclude.txt /fs22/a/circuit_design mickey.willow.com:/cpu/store/design where file /fs21/tmp/perl_scripts/exclude.txt contains the following directories and files to be excluded from /fs22/a/circuit_design :
