OpenSSH-1.12pre15: fun with ulimit
Since upgrading from pre11 (aack, that was old!) to pre15, i get the
following message when logging in via ssh to a box with the OpenSSH
server running:
ulimit: cannot raise limit: Operation not permitted
I've traced this to the following command in /etc/profile:
ulimit -c 1000000
It seems as if sshd is turning off core dumps for the shell session it
spawns. Any idea what change

Try also removing --delete-excluded. Without those two options there
should be no reason for rsync to require gigs of RAM. Well, unless
the other system has rsync 2.x.

Differentiating debug messages from both sides
Some of the debug messages that rsync outputs (when verbose >= 2) can
occur on both sides of the connection. This makes it hard to know which
program is saying what. Some debug messages deal with this by
outputting a "[PID]" string at the start of the message. Unfortunately,
the startup message that tells us which pid is which is only output when
verbose >= 3, so there's a

rsync out of memory in flist_expand
Hi,
I have been using rsync for years to perform my backups, but since a
few days it crashes with an "out of memory" error.
I am running Ubuntu 11.04/x86_64, which ships rsync-3.0.8, and I have
also tried with the git version.
I can see the following messages:
[generator] expand file_list pointer array to 524288 bytes, did move

rsync out of memory at 8 MB although ulimit is 512MB
Hello again,
I encountered something amazing. First I thought there is not
enough memory allowed through ulimit. ulimit is now set to
(almost) 512MB but rsync still gets out fo memory at 8MB.
Can anyone tell me why?
That's my configuration:
rsync version 2.6.2
from AIX 5.3 to SuSE Linux 9 (also has rsync 2.6.2)
ulimit -a (AIX)
ulimit -a AIX (source):

I have backups of user home directories that I've shared out via samba
so that my non-linux level 1 guy can restore files using the
drag-n-drop. Problem is, all directories are owned by their respective
user and are set 700. In order for the admin users to access these
directories, I've set admin user=@SuperAdmins for the share in smb.conf.
The problem is, al the admin users have

enable 64-bit inums in build on AIX
Hello,
I'm building rsync on an AIX 6.1.9.6 host. I would like to build it so
it has
64-bit inums enabled but have not been able to figure out how to enable this
feature. Can someone please provide me with some guidance on how do do this?
This is my current build:

rsync 3.0.9 segmentation fault
Hi,
I am experiencing segfaults when transferring files via rsync though sudo.
Setup:
- Backupserver initiates the rsync command with --delete -vvv
--no-inc-recursive --numeric-ids --delete-excluded --relative
--rsync-path=/home/backupuser/rsync-wrapper.sh
- rsync-wrapper.sh (on the client) contains /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/rsync

- user "backupuser" has sudo access to the

upgrading samba 4.1.4 to the latest samba 4 release
You should think about using alternate repositories like from launchpad.
The most common repository used seems the one from sernet.
You need to register at sernet for this. Have a look at http://enterprisesamba.com/

I was going to ask that but I assumed you meant 4.1.16 instead of the

Samba 3.0.0 compile errors
Apologies first!
I am currently maintaining a very old SunOS 4.1.3_U1 server which is in a
sensitive location an cannot be upgraded. It will be replaced soon, but in the
meantime...
I need to upgrade my Samba 2.0.6 to Samba 3.0.0, but receive the following
compile errors:

Using FLAGS = -g -O2 -I./popt -Iinclude

Problem browsing shares on 4.1.4 (Ubuntu 12.04)
Hi there,
I noticed this bug as we were due to put this into production and wondered
if anyone else had seen similar.
When browsing a PDC share on Samba 4.1.4 (like Sysvol or netlogon or any
other newly created one) from a Windows box we see this error:
"\\pdc\share refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a
hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure
