data manipulation between vector and matrix
Dear list, I was curious how to subtract a vector from matrix? Say, I have mat <- matrix(1:40, nrow=20, ncol=2) x <-c(1,2) I want, x-mat[1,] and x-mat[2,], and so on... Basically, subtract column elements of x against column elements in mat. But x-mat won't do it. Thanks, Mike [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Matrix: Problem with the code
Hi, Can any one please explain why the following code doesn't work? Or can anyone suggest an alternative. Suppose       x<-c(23,67,2,87,9,63,8,2,35,6,91,41,22,3)        mat<-0;        for(j in 1:length(x))        {              for(i in 1:p)                      mat[i,j]<-x[j]^i;        }    Actually I want to have a matrix with p columns such that each column will have the

For loop indicies
I would like to run a for loop with an index going from 0 to 499 but the following seems to miss out the first value: C <- 499 for (i in 0:C) The alternative is: C <- 500 for (i in 1:C) { #Then every time I use i, I replace it with i-1 } Is this a good way to do it or is tere a better way? Named components in a list
I'm studying lists and I came to an example where > L $name [1] "Fred" $wife [1] "Mary" $no.children [1] 4 $child.ages [1] 4 7 9 then following the instructions to extend the list with a new component, I executed: > L[5] <-list(NewName="something") and the new list I got was: > L $name [1] "Fred" $wife [1] "Mary"

Avoiding loops to detect number of coincidences
Hi all, I have this information on a file ht.txt, imagine it is a data frame without labels: 1 1 1 8 1 1 6 4 1 3 1 3 3 And on other table called "pru.txt" I have sequences similar this 4 1 1 8 1 1 6 4 1 3 1 3 3 1 6 1 8 1 1 6 4 1 3 1 3 3 1 1 1 8 1 1 6 4 1 3 1 3 3 6 6 6 8 1 1 6 4 1 3 1 3 3 I want to now how many positions are identical between each row in pru compared with ht. n and m

Replacing labels with symbols in biplot
Dear all I would like to replace labels for x in biplot() with symbols (points) that will visually illustrate different classes/groups. After an unsuccessful search through the documents and archives, I turn to the list for help - any suggestions that can point me in the right direction? Thanks Mat Vanderklift

abline on heatmap
Hi, Is there a way I can draw an abline on a heatmap? I try the abline function, but don't get the line. My sample code is: mat <- matrix(sample(1:100,40),nrow=5) heatmap(mat,col=greenred(75),trace="none", dendrogram = "column",labCol = NULL) abline(h=5,v=4) thanks! [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

How to Reshuffle a distance object
I would like to randomly shuffle a distance object, such as the one created by ade4{dist.binary} below. My first attempt, using sample(jc.dist) creates a shuffled vector, losing the lower triangular structure of the distance object. How can I Ishuffle the lower triangular part of a distance matrix without losing the structure? Thanks. --Dale x1 <- c(rep(0,4),1) x2 <- c(rep(0,2),rep(1,3))

an unusual use for R
I thought some of you might be amused by this. In my non-work time, I'm an avid weaver and teacher of weaving. I'm working on a project involving creating many detailed weaving patterns, so I wrote R code to automate it. Details here: http://stringpage.com/blog/?p=822 If the overlap between R users and avid tablet weavers turns out to be >> 1, I'll polish it up and turn it

writing R extension
I'd like to develop a simple library in R in which to save my particular functions. I have read the manual on "Writing R Extensions" but it's too difficult. Someone could help me? I want only save my personal function (recorded in R-code, not in C) in "myLibrary" and I want to call it with: >library (myLibrary). After this, the functions should be available

question about anova() output
Hello, I am getting output from anova() and summary(aov()) that depends on the order of the factors in the fitted model object, and this has me baffled. I see this dependency with the data.frame below but not with an example (table 6.4) from Montgomery's DOE book. This is with R 1.3.0 on Debian GNU-Linux. question about capscale (vegan)
Hello, I am interested in using the capscale function of vegan package of R. I already have a dissimilarity matrix and I am intended to use it as 'distance' argument. But then, I don't know what kind of data must be in 'comm' argument. I don't understand what type of data must be referred as 'species scores' and 'community data frame' since my data refer to

Finding the median
Hi just a quick question in which I must use the "function and return" part of R. If I was asked to define a function called "median" where the function has a single argument x and returns the median value of a vector. How would I go about saying the median = element x in terms of n (say (n + 1)/2 or whatever it would be) if there is an even amount of elements, or x in terms

R not ploting lines in the correct order
Hi, I have a set of x, y points where x represents dates and y actual values. I am trying to plot a line graph of the data with points on top, but R is connecting the wrong points with lines. Does anyone know how I can rectify this. Please see sample below: x= 24/09/2009 09:13 16/10/2009 11:17 24/10/2009 21:43 11/09/2009 18:34 22/08/2009 15:45 10/08/2009 00:30 14/08/2009 14:52 24/09/2009
