error: no marshal_dump is defined for class Thread
I get this error periodically in backgroundrb.log, but only on my
production box (the one running ruby 1.8.5) - my dev box doesn''t get
this error. As far as I can tell, everything is working ok, despite
the error (I don''t really know how to determine if the jobs are
getting threaded successfully, but they are running, that I am sure
of).
Here''s the dump:

getting started
Hey all,
Been reading through all the old posts (and the docs) to familiarize
myself but I still feel a bit lost.
I''m on trunk and am having a bit of a hard time knowing where to start
with the particular I''m trying to solve.
So far, I''ve downloaded backgroundrb, done the basic rails setup,
created my worker and started it using `script/backgroundrb start`.

Feedback on RC2
I tried to upgrade my existing application to RC2 last night. Like many, I
use this mostly for running scheduled tasks. For the moment, I''ve abandoned
the effort, but am looking forward to being able to use this. Feedback
below:
First, the reason I was looking forward to this upgrade was to use the
threaded scheduler. I have an application with long-running tasks. I found

pre-release version of backgroundrb available now from svn
Hi,
A pre-release version of backgroundrb is available now from svn.
Download it from here:
http://svn.devjavu.com/backgroundrb/branches/version099/
Since this release marks significant migration from existing
practices, i intend to keep trunk untouched for a while.
There are no install scripts, but you should copy "backgroundrb" file
from script directory of plugin to script

Unable to load Models which reference plugins?
I''m using a plugin which adds a method to ActiveRecord::Base
http://similetimelinerailshelper.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/simile_timeline/
This adds an "acts_as" type declaration to the Models, via the file in
vendor/plugins/simile_timeline/lib/simile_timeline.rb Rails is working
with these declarations, and they are being used successfully in

Upper limit to number of jobs queued by BDRb?
I use BDRb to process RSS feeds for users on my site (http://feedflix.com).
I have a batch job that queries the DB for records that haven''t been updated
in the last so many hours and kicks off a background job for each of them.
If N records are returned by the DB, N background jobs gets queued and get
done serially. As long as N is 255 or under, everything works like a charm.

BDRB, new version questions
Hi,
we are trying to use BDRB for background processing of long-running

BackgrounDRb release 1.0 available now
Hi Folks,
I am glad to announce 1.0 release of BackgrounDRb.
This would be a major release since 0.2 release of BackgrounDRb.
Here is a brief summary of changes:
- BackgrounDRb is DRb no longer. It makes use of EventDriven network
programming library packet ( http://packet.googlecode.com ).
- Since we moved to packet, many nasty thread issues, result hash
corruption issues are totally

Schedule write errors?
My BackgrounDRb server intermittently bails out with the following exception

Backgroundrb with Load Balancing Rails engines
Hi there,
We run several (3-4) Rails servers behind the reverse proxy / load
balancing web server serving the single application. All Rails
instances share the same database and use the database as a session
storage. Memcached is also part of the picture.
I''m looking into using Backgroundrb for some large uploads / parsing
task that provide progress status updates (via ajax calls).

BackgrounDRb version 1.0RC1 available now
Hi Folks,
BackgrounDRb is a Ruby job server and scheduler. Its main intent is to be
used with Ruby on Rails applications for offloading long-running tasks.
Since a Rails application blocks while serving a request it is best to
move long-running tasks off into a background process that is divorced
from http request/response cycle.
This new release of BackgrounDRb is also modular and can be used

Why the switch to SMTP
Can anyone explain why BackgrounDRb is switching form DRb to SMTP
protocol? That seems like a lot of overhead to add to the messaging

Cannot connect when spawning new workers on demand
Hi!
I''m using the latest&greatest backgroundrb with rails 2.0.2 on ubuntu
dapper.
I''ve made an app that lets you run a query on several servers at once,
which are selected at runtime. Therefore, for each server that is
selected, I spawn a new worker and assign its work.
After everything is completed, the workers are deleted.
I often get this error:

Logging & Threading
Hey again,
After playing with BackgrounDRb a bit longer, I have two more issues I''d
like to bring up with it.
1. Logging... it seems like even when the environment is set to production
in both Mongrel and the backgroundrb.yml file, all ActiveRecord SQL
statements are written to the development log. If you''re doing a lot of
ActiveRecord stuff in your workers, then the

Deploying to a staging server using Capistrano: how to start up BackgrounDRb?
Hi.
I am using BackgrounDRb to process thumbnails and upload to S3 -
things are hunky-dory in development (thumbs are generated, these are
uploaded to S3, the metadata is saved to trhe DB, and I get a nice
status page updated by periodic calls via ask_status), but when I
tried to deploy to our staging server and stop/start BackgrounDRb via
Capistrano, things blew up - well, not exactly,

periodic scheduling
I''ve been using backgroundrb since back in March 2007 or so. It''s
been working mostly OK for me, but since the old version doesn''t seem
to work out of the box with rails 2.0 for me, I decided to test out
the latest version.
So, I''m looking at the scheduling, and trying to figure out the best
option for what I want to do. What I have is a set of workers that

worker cleanup
I was using an older version of backgroundrb and today I started to
play with the most recent release. First up, I''d like to say, thanks
so much for this library and thanks for making it more stable. From
the looks of things, I think it''s going to be easier to use now than
it was several months ago when I first started using it.
I''d like to make sure I''m using

Release tags in SVN?
Hi,
Im just wondering what strategy I should use for checking out from
your repo. I''ve seen posts here announcing BackrounDRb 1.0 RC 2, 1.0
but I don''t see any tags in the repo for these releases - I only see
two old tags (release-0.2.0 & release-0.2.1). I''m assuming the HEAD
code might be a bit unstable at times so should I use timestamps for
checking
