Building PXE Bootable images using the libguestfs toolchain
As part of the oVirt Node[1] project, I'm going to P.O.C. a version of the node using febootstrap 2.x instead of livecd-creator. The main reasons in doing this is for allowing a r/w root filesystem without some hacky overlayfs and just to see if it can be done. On IRC, rwmjones mentioned a few issues he ran into with febootstrap 2.x where some rpms had %post scripts which aren't really

Using febootstrap , please help
Hello, I am new to febootstrap. I am struggling to install fedora 14 on disk.img (formatted with ext4fs) mounted on /mnt/temp . How to use febootstrap to do this ? Does it require any yum configuration ? I searched the web for documentation on this , but nothing is clearly mentioned. Please anyone tell me how to do this. I am doing this on Fedora 14 host. -- Onkar

Rethinking appliance building
I spent the last couple of days rethinking how we go about building the appliance, and the difficulties we have porting that to other Linux distros. I've come up with a much better way that works better and faster on (so far) Fedora and Debian (probably on Ubuntu too, not tried it), and should be much simpler to port to other distros. The current way is to do: +------------------+

[PATCH] Make appliance-building work on systems with default library search paths differing from the appliance's
Systems such as Debian (and thus Ubuntu) operate with 64-bit programs in /lib, with /lib64 a symlink to it: as a result, they apply a patch to their glibc adjusting the default search path of the 64-bit dynamic loader (only used if the library is not found in ld.so.cache) to look in /lib, and instruct the 32-bit one to look in /lib32. Because fakechroot is implemented via LD_PRELOAD, it ends up

Testing Hiera Lookup with Puppet Master
Hello, Is there an easy way to test hiera lookup for a node? A node is not getting the value I expect from Hiera and I want a way to test this. I noticed that `hiera` has an option called `-i` to use the Puppet inventory service. With the latest (RC4 I believe) of Hiera I''m getting the following when I try to use that though: Puppet inventory service lookup failed: NoMethodError:

Notes on libguestfs with Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise)
Ubuntu are now supplying a libguestfs package (or to be more accurate, they are just copying the Debian package) but it doesn't work out of the box. There is a bug in apt which we worked around in febootstrap 3.14, but the supplied version of febootstap is only 3.12. Hence you will get errors like this during installation: febootstrap: aptitude: error: no file was downloaded corresponding

Atomicity of updates on the Puppet master
Hello, I''m currently setting up some scripts that will pull in new data for Puppet master (modules, manifests, hiera data, etc.) from a Git repository. It works great! However, I''m concerned about atomicity of the whole thing. Does the Puppet master cache the modules/manifests when it starts? If so, do I need to restart the Puppet master on each update? Or can I send it a

Bay Cities Ruby Group
Hello, I''m trying to organize a Bay Cities Ruby Group in Southern California. This would include the cities of Redondo Beach, Manhatten Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, Gardena, Lomita, etc. If you are interesting in joining a group that would be like other ruby groups where we discuss tricks, technique, theory, etc. and help each other, then please join the mailing list:

[PATCH] Change fallback name for external supermin helper
Use basename of external helper instead of 'no' for external supermin helpers. This gives a clear error messages what binary is actually missing, and it is now possible to install the missing package without recompiling libguestfs. In addition its now also possible to use private builds of supermin (if they are in PATH) with a given libguestfs binary package. Signed-off-by: Olaf Hering

Difference between the old and the new febootstrap
Hi, First, I'd like to thank you for your nice effort of the febootstrap tool. I understand there are 2 major versions of this tool the first has the syntax of "febootstrap fedora-12 ./f12" while the second has the syntax "febootstrap --names ....." Is it correct? I also understand the second one is used only to create a minimal system. is it correct too? But what about

"ext2: parent directory not found" with Ubuntu 12.04
Hi all, On the most libguestfs commands (guestfish, virt-*), I have always the same message: "febootstrap-supermin-helper: ext2: parent directory not found: /lib: File not found by ext2_lookup" I'm aware of a similar bug with the old package [1]: "Note on febootstrap (may not be directly related to this bug): You need 3.14 to work around that. I would recommend using at least

febootstrap 3.x use cases.
I'm confused! What use cases is the new febootstrap primarily intended for? I'm mainly trying to figure out if I'm trying to put a square peg into a round hole. What I'm looking into is using linux containers (LXC) either using libvirt or lxc-tools) to create jails for a web hosting type environment. I can see that in the long run btrfs has some nice features to help with this
