[PATCH v2] Replace shell_quote function with %Q and %R printf specifiers.
Here is an update to the patch posted yesterday. The changes are:
(1) Don't use inline (for mdbooth).
(2) Added a comment to HACKING (for mdbooth).
(3) Check for old-style and new-style glibc functions and use whatever
is available (for danpb).
(4) Removed the old shell_quote function instead of just commenting it
out.
Can anyone decode from Uli's message[1] whether these new

Add support for musl libc
Hi,
I?m trying to compile libguestfs on Alpine Linux, that uses musl libc (lightweight, fast and simple standards-conformance libc). It fails in the check phase due to missing glibc-style extended printf formatters.

[nbdkit PATCH v2 0/2] adding nbdkit --run '$uri'
Since v1:
- new patch to add uri_quote()
- rebase on top of other recent patches needed while auditing shell_quote()
- use uri_quote() instead of shell_quote() for producing $uri
Eric Blake (2):
common/utils: Add uri_quote and tests

[nbdkit PATCH] captive: Support $uri in --run
The existing --run '$nbd' outputs an older form that differs between
libguestfs and qemu, and which is not always a valid URI. For
historical compatibility, we probably can't change that; but we can
instead add a new '$uri' that outputs a valid URI. Note that the
libguestfs '$nbd' TCP form is already a valid URI, but that libguestfs
still needs to be taught about the

[PATCH nbdkit v2] tmpdisk: Generalize the tmpdisk plugin
An evolution of v1 here:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2020-April/msg00035.html
I want to generalize the tmpdisk plugin, particularly so you can use
commands like ‘qemu-img create’ or even ‘virt-builder’.
(Actually virt-builder really works - I tested it - but of course it
causes a 30+ second delay when connecting to the server.)
You can now use commands such as:
nbdkit tmpdisk

[nbdkit PATCH] iso: Shell-quote an alternative isoprog
Otherwise, a user can do things like "nbdkit iso . prog='date;prog'"
to run unintended commands in addition to their alternative isoprog.
This is not a CVE (since nbdkit isn't running with any more privileges
than the user running those commands themselves), but shows the
frailty of relying on the shell to parse subsidiary commands rather
than exec()ing them directly. This

[PATCH nbdkit v3] tmpdisk: Generalize the tmpdisk plugin.
v2 was here:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2020-April/msg00075.html
In v3:
- Add [VAR=VALUE ...] to manual.
- Various minor improvements to the manual.
- Work (at least, in theory - not tested) with block devices or
symlinks. I didn't document this because it's hard to ensure these
files or block devices would be cleaned up, so here be dragons.
- Remove O_NOCTTY.

[PATCH nbdkit 0/2] Generalize the tmpdisk plugin.
Patch 1/2 is uncontroversial.
Patch 2/2 is an interesting idea I had to generalize this plugin. It
already uses a complete embedded shell script to do most of the work.
What if, instead of making special cases for "type" and "label"
params, we simply turn any other plugin parameters into script
variables? This part of it works fine. However there is another
problem which is

wishlist: option to cause /bin/sh to be used instead of user's shell
SSH, like RSH before it, invokes a command using the user's shell as
specified in the passwd file. In a mixed shell environment with some
logins csh-like and some sh-like that is sometimes very difficult to
handle. (No, I am not fond of csh.) If I could force a single shell
everywhere of course that would be preferable but sometimes I have no
control over it.
I have often wanted an option

[PATCH nbdkit] New tmpdisk plugin.
Unfinished (needs tests). This is my attempt to make a
"remote tmpfs" plugin as outlined in this prior email:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2020-March/msg00134.html
Although it would be possible to construct something a bit like this
using existing plugins and filters (perhaps with some new features in
those filters) I think it may be nicer to have a dedicated plugin for

[PATCH nbdkit v3 0/4] Add linuxdisk plugin.
For v3 I reimplemented this using mke2fs -d. This obviously makes the
implementation a whole lot simpler, but cannot support multiple
directory merging.
Patches 1-3 are the same as before. I've also reproduced the notes
from v2 below.
v2:
- Fix inconsistent tab/space.
- All 3 plugins now contain a block of text pointing to the
other 2 plugins.
- TMDIR -> TMPDIR
- Unlink the

[PATCH nbdkit] server: Deprecate the -e/--exportname parameter.
This parameter provided a name for the "default export" -- ie. the one
and only export returned to the client by NBD_OPT_LIST. But nbdkit
traditionally didn't care what export name the client requested.
Since 1.16 plugins have been able to serve different content per
export name (and return errors for unknown exports), but the -e option
didn't reflect that and only created

[PATCH INCOMPLETE] Rewrite virt-make-fs in C (originally Perl).
I thought it would be easy to rewrite virt-make-fs in C.
Two days later ...
The Perl program uses a lot of external commands, which makes
it pretty tedious to implement in C.

[PATCH nbdkit v3] New tmpdisk plugin.
v2 was here:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2020-March/msg00154.html
v3:
- Micro-optimize tmpdir.
- Quote $disk in default command shell fragment.
- Don't redirect mkfs output to /dev/null. Instead use
exec </dev/null >/dev/null before the shell fragment.
We may want to do this in other places where we run
external shell scripts, or more generally for all
