production-izing a popular site
Lets say you have a site that is serving, oh, around 100k unique
visitors a day (plain ole'' browser requests) - plus probably ~ 40k
uniques to feeds. Assume this site is 90% read like most of the web,
so the traffic looks like your typical news or portal site. There are
two web boxes behind a hardware load balancer, each doing apache 2.2.3
-> mongrel_proxy_balancer -> mongrel

mongrel memory usage ballooning and process stomping
Hi,
I have mongrel 0.3.14, with ruby 1.8.5, rails 1.1.6 and mongrel cluster
0.2.1, on debian sage 3.1 with apache 2.0, and fastthread 0.6.1.
I am load balancing 3 mongrel processes using the random port trick.
When I start mongrel the processes have about 60MB, but after some hour of
usage the memory ballons upto more than 180MB and the site becomes terribly
slow. Forcing me to restart mongrel

serving static files
It seems that Merb is sending static files with Mongrel::DirHandler.
(mongrel_handler.rb:52)
if get_or_head and @files.can_serve(path_info)
# File exists as-is so serve it up
MERB_LOGGER.info("Serving static file: #{path_info}")
@files.process(request,response)
I haven''t done benchmarks and I''ve hardly glanced at DirHandler''s code
but the

Possible memory leak problem...
I''m trying to figure out a possible memory leak problem I have in my
application.
I''ve tested both with mongrel and webrick and the problem remains. So
I think it''s not a mongrel problem, but I''m posting here to see if
anybody can help me.
The RAILS application is quite simple, no special plugins ( no
RMagick that has the memory problem ),

Most reliable setup for mongrel
I''m looking for the most reliable setup for Mongrel. Reliable meaning
avoiding things like sending too many requests to a single mongrel
process, or sending requests to a mongrel process that has hung for
some reason. The handler will most likely be rails, but it might be a
custom handler. SSL is also a requirement, which limits the options a
bit but it can''t be done away

adding a before_filter to static content
Hi,
I have a Rails site that uses a before_filter in the application
controller that does some authentication and authorization work.
I also have a bunch of HTML in folders in the application''s public directory.
Before a user can view anything in the public directory, I''d like to
authenticate them. How could I do that?
I''m using mongrel, if it matters.
Thanks,
Joe

versioning of win32 versus ruby gems
I know we already mentioned this before on the list but I couldn''t
find it in the archives. Is there a way to differentiate the versions
for ruby/mswin32 so that I could run a command like:
# sudo gem install mongrel
--source=http://mongrel.rubyforge.org/releases/ --include-dependencies
--version 1.0
and have it not prompt me like this:
Select which gem to install for your platform

Serving static files with Merb
Hi,
I''m using Merb from the svn repository (revision 224, Merb 0.3.0).
I am playing around trying to return static files. I''m opening a File
and returning that from the controller. I''m setting the mime type and
the content length (other wise nothing much happens). All requests
for static content go through the same action of a particular
controller.

ultramonkey vs pound?
I know most people use pound, but has anyone tried using ultramonkey as
a load balancing solution between a cluster of mongrels and lighttpd?
Thanks,
Ray

Stopping DRb after using BackgrounDRb::MiddleManDRbObject.init
Hi,
I''m having a problem where connections started through
BackgrounDRb::MiddleManDRbObject.init are not stopped, resulting in an
ever growing established connections between my Mongrels and remote
backgroundrbs
I added DRb.stop_service to my code executed after requests that init
MiddleManDRbObjects but that does not help.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Nginx, Mongrel, Proxy and REMOTE_ADDR
I''m using a cluster of mongrels behind an apache 1.3 proxy pass. I''ve
been passing the request to pen, which in turn balances the cluster of
mongrels. Now, I''d like to be able to use a different server to send
the static files created by the rails application, so I tried to
replace pen with nginx. Everything seems to work fine except the
environment variable REMOTE_ADDR.

Issue with caching of .PNG files in IE..
I''m running a Rails application with WEBrick server. We are displaying
an Image from the server to the Client (Browser). First time on the
browser everything looks fine, upon clicking the link, it contacts the
server and displays in IE brwoser the image that was stored on the
server.
But in case if the image gets changed on the server(File Name being the
same), then even though i

simple formmail question
I have a few forms that I''d like users to fill out. The results of
the form will be sent to a few addresses.
What''s the least painless way to do this and keep everything DRY?
There''s no database involved. Ideally, I''d like to email the form
questions with the answers inline.
Seems like using ActionMailer and separate email views would be
overkill in this

Memory leaks in my site
Hi all,
My environment is ruby-1.8.4, rails 1.2.2, mongrel 1.0.1, linux 2.6. Now, i
have a problem on memory leaks with mongrel. My site is running 5 mongrel
processes on a 2G RAM machine, the memory of each process grows from about
20M to about 250M, but it never recover to the initial 20M, so i had to
restart the mongrel processes once per day. The load is about 1M hits per
day.

what is the correct way to stop/start a mongrel instance using monit with mongrel cluster
Hi --
I have been reading documentation and googling around to find the
correct way to do this but I have found many ways that seem to not
work, or the documentation makes no reference to.
I am using mongrel cluster with 10 mongrels for each server. Recently
I installed monit but which lead me to find the correct way to
start/stop mongrel instances one pid at a time. I am assuming one pid

validates_acceptance_of + functional testing
I had to add a check box indicating that a user accepted certain terms
to a page. So, I put in a ''validates_acceptance_of :terms'' line into
the appropriate model and added a checkbox to my view. Everything
works as expected in my web browser.
However, my functional tests still pass and I didn''t add or change
anything to them. I was expecting to have to add another

monit vs mongrel cluster
Is there anything mongrel cluster gives you that monit doesn''t? I''ll
be using monit to monitor a number of other services anyways, so it
seems logical to just use it for everything including mongrel.
