For what I understand, although it may not be an easy job to do, Wine developers are planning to fully support copy protection at some point. They're not saying "it's never going to happen", it's just a matter of work.

Re: wine vs virtualbox
I appologize for not posting that I gave this approach up already. The issue was that I wanted to run virtual pc because I knew it would handle .vhd files. I'm testing out virtualbox at the moment. I need everthing to run from a flash drive on a bare metal machine for emergency disaster recovery situations. I was merely exploring all avenues that I found and wine was one of those avenues.

I only have 1 VM on my linux host. in the update process to virtualbox

After some thought, it makes sense to use VirtualBox for teaching,
since many people will probably start testing Linux using VirtualBox
on Windows or macOS. Too

OT: snow socket clusters with VirtualBox and VMware player (Linux host, Win guest)
Dear All,
I am trying to create socket clusters (using snow and snowfall) with a
Windows OS. I am running Windows inside VirtualBox and VMware player
(i.e., Windows is guest) from a Debian Linux host system (I've tried
in two different Linux systems, an AMD x86-64 workstation and an Intel
i686 laptop). However, almost always seting up the cluster fails:
either R will hang forever or I will

Xfce vs. VirtualBox : font size problem
Hi,
I'm running CentOS 7 with Xfce on my main workstation. I just installed
VirtualBox, and the application is running nicely. The only problem is
that VirtualBox fonts are too tiny. How can I make the application
behave and use the system-wide font settings ?
Cheers,
Niki

CentOS 7.6 1810 vs. VirtualBox : bug with keyboard layout selection
Hi,
I'm currently working on my next Linux book, which will be an elementary
course about CentOS administration. I'm using VirtualBox for all the
installer screenshots.
Since CentOS has recently been upgraded to version 7.6, I thought I
might as well base all book references on this version. So I downloaded
the 7.6 1810 minimal ISO and started a fresh installation in VirtualBox.
I'm

[PATCH] virt-v2v: Support for Converting VirtualBox Guests
Hi,
attached is an updated [1] patch for virt-v2v to support converting
VirtualBox guests with VirtualBox Guest Additions [2] installed. With
the patch applied a VirtualBox RHEL 6 guest with Guest Additions can be
converted with the steps documented in the manual page.
I've tested this patch on a RHEL 6.2 host running VirtualBox 4.1.8 using
a RHEL 6.2 guest, the guest works as expected

isohybrid and ISO images whose size is not a multiple of 2048 bytes vs. VirtualBox
Hi,
at [Tails] we're in the process of shipping hybrid ISO images by
default again. We're using `isohybrid -h 255 -s 63' to do that (thanks
to the advice we got on this mailing-list a few months ago!).
And then, we've discovered that sometimes, isohybrid produces ISO
images whose size is not a multiple of 2048 bytes.
Who cares? ... may you ask. Well, apparently, VirtualBox does:

This is what I normally use.
My only use for VirtualBox is making screenshots of the installer, and
sometimes for a quick test, because it's easy to make a VM clone in a
single click.

Wine-only distro, Virtualbox+Wine to sandbox apps, R/O FS
Hello everybody,
at my company we have the need to run a specific window application within a sandbox on windows itself. Anything (including the application) that is not data produced by the application itself has to be on a read-only filesystem.
We decided we'll use wine for the task, within a virtualbox environment that will act as a sandbox. There are a few questions that I'd like to
