getting started
Hey all, Been reading through all the old posts (and the docs) to familiarize myself but I still feel a bit lost. I''m on trunk and am having a bit of a hard time knowing where to start with the particular I''m trying to solve. So far, I''ve downloaded backgroundrb, done the basic rails setup, created my worker and started it using `script/backgroundrb start`.

Testing Models without fixtures
Hi, I would like to test a sorting method that is in the user model, it''s a class method called search. What I would like to do is create 2 users and load the test database with just those 2 users, so that I can call User.search("john") and it would return those two users. Not sure how to clear the test database and populate it just with these 2 users for that specific

Updates and Fixes on Trunk
Hi, I am pushing some updates and fixes that addresses much of the issues that we talked about since last couple of days. 1. Use configuration option :debug_log: false to disable backgroundrb_debug.log. 2. As shown below, use lazy_load option to disable aggressive loading of models ( and somewhat stupid too). 3. MiddleMan.delete_worker(:worker => :foo_worker) will now ABORT the worker, it

Arity?
Hello, First off, nice improvements hemant! Thanks for all the hard work. I just whipped up a new worker for a scheduled job that sends digest emails. Very smooth. However, moving some of my old backgroundrb into new backgroundrb isn''t going quite as smoothly. I have a import worker that takes a number of parameters and then is started dynamically. Here''s the a

periodic scheduling
I''ve been using backgroundrb since back in March 2007 or so. It''s been working mostly OK for me, but since the old version doesn''t seem to work out of the box with rails 2.0 for me, I decided to test out the latest version. So, I''m looking at the scheduling, and trying to figure out the best option for what I want to do. What I have is a set of workers that

Cannot connect when spawning new workers on demand
Hi! I''m using the latest&greatest backgroundrb with rails 2.0.2 on ubuntu dapper. I''ve made an app that lets you run a query on several servers at once, which are selected at runtime. Therefore, for each server that is selected, I spawn a new worker and assign its work. After everything is completed, the workers are deleted. I often get this error:

backgroundrb and rspec Stories
Hi, I would like to use backgroundrb inside a story, been trying to set this up for a while, but I think the only solution is to use fixture files and unit testing. The problem is that every time I call a new worker, the test database gets wiped out, and only has available the records in fixture files. Instead, it would be great if the test database maintains its state throughout the

can a worker commit suicide?
Can a worker kill themselves when they''re ''done''? Or do I have to do that either from the controller or the worker manager? backgroundrb and autotest
Hi, First, thanks for the plugin. Sorry if this is not strictly a backgroundrb issue but I thought others on this list might have come across this problem. I''m trying to run the test that comes via the worker generator. The test works fine when running ''rake test_functional'', but when the tests are run by autotest I get "uninitialized constant BackgrounDRb"

querying status of worker with job_key
Hi, Is it possible to start a worker with job_key and then ask_status of that specific worker with the job_key? MiddleMan.ask_work(:worker => :auth_worker, :job_key=>''1'', :worker_method => :auth) and then MiddleMan.ask_status(:worker => :auth_worker, :job_key=>''1'') >From my testing of the new backgroundrb, asking status using job key

Memory leak?
I am using BackgrounDRb to resize images after they are accepted into our system. However, it has become clear that this creates a memory leak. I''m not sure exactly where the leak exists, but I don''t think it''s in my own code as it is presently being used in production and has resized thousands of images without a leak occurring, thanks to calling GC.start

nil-error
Hi all, I''ve got the error below in my backgroundrb_debug.log. I''ve tried to reproduce the error in the development environment, but the only way I can get the same thing is by calling ask_work with a bogus worker name. Calling it with the production code causes no error. Here''s an example of what the code calls: MiddleMan.ask_work(:worker => :agronomy_worker,

backgroundrb preview
Hi Ezra/skaar, Wow man, the exercise was worth it. The connection closed problem with socket as i mentioned in my earlier mails...completely disappeared, and now i can connect only once to the socket and keep reading..till end of its days. Literally impossible with older release of backgroundrb. This could also potentially solve the issues people were having with ActiveRecord. As i said

Using my models
I''m working on upgrading my app to the latest version of backgroundrb. Everything went find until I tried to execute my tasks. Here is my simple worker for testing: class MscWorker < BackgrounDRb::MetaWorker set_worker_name :msc_worker def create(args = nil) # this method is called, when worker is loaded for the first time end # Send a message to everyone def

OK I know whats happening. Your while loop completes and calls kill on the worker before your task_progress controller method ever gets called> So the worker is deleted and when you try to access it from rails you get an error because there is no longer a worker at that job key. The kill method is meant to be used within a worker that you fire and forget. If you want to get the

Trouble using backgroundrb
Hi all, I''m a newbie to backgroundrb and am having trouble integrating it into my rails-app. I''m using namespaces to differentiate between the parts of my app. When I want to create a new worker, it seems that it cannot find the worker object. Here''s my code: -------------------- controller app/passwd/index -------------------- class Passwd::IndexController <

BackgrounDRb New release.
Howdy Folks- I''m happy to announce a new release of BackgrounDRb! I have added quite a few new features and included some nice patches from folks on the list. $ script/plugin install svn://rubyforge.org//var/svn/backgroundrb All of the code now stays within the plugin and the start and stop scripts are now just stubs. This makes it easier to tweak or figure out how it works.

Update
Folks- I just commited another revision of the plugin. Nothing huge in this update but some extra features. Acl lists are now configurable in the config file. So you will want to blow away and recreate your config file again. Thanks to Georg Friedrich for this. And I applied Gunter Ladwig''s patch for singleton worker classes. These are workers that only have one instance of

delete_worker doesn''t kill the thread?
I made a worker that run an infinite loop and does the following: while true @logger << "logging #{Time.now}" sleep 2 end In my secong console I did: tail log/backgroundrb.log -f This is so I could see the line getting added to the log every 2 seconds. Then in my other console I started script/console and created a new worker. Then killed it with
