Seperating Forground from Background
One thing I have noticed when encoding VCDs is that often videos with
complex backgrounds don't compress nearly as well as those with simple
ones. Part of the problem is that TV cameras seam to have the focus so
that the entire image is clear rather than focusing on the foreground (and
blurring the backgrounds). The result is that a good number of bits are
wasted trying to perfectly

Date/time of formation of objects
Hi
Is there any way of attaching the date and time of formation of an object
so that ls() can report such things in a manner similar to the Unix ls
command? And/or a comment attached? Could this be added to the
housekeeping wish-list?
I usually use my own little command lls() (below) that reminds me of the
mode and size of a structure since I often have R sesssions open for days
at a time.

Problems with multiboot DVD and isolinux > 3.07
Hi,
some time ago I tried to boot an isolinux boot loader from another one
to be able to boot e.g. a Knoppix CD with its original boot loader and
menus from a "main" isolinux on a multiboot DVD.
This works for isolinux <= 3.07 now!
However, newer isolinux boot loaders have some problems and the isolinux
(e.g. of the Knoppix CD) loaded from the multiboot DVD's main isolinux

Centos 5 beta - did I miss it
Hi all,
I read the "projected date" for Centos 5 beta was Jan 8.
I havn't seen anything else?
I know its not ready till its ready but just was wondering
if there is a new projected date I guess.
I have a laptop that doesnt seem to like 4.4 and I was hoping
5 beta would be the magic.
Thanks,
Jerry

Miss-aligned text in program
I'm trying to use a datavoice workstation to access a voice
recording box we have.
The software works fine under wine and we get resonable playback
of the telephone recordings. Ie program works but.
The text in alot of the screens seams to be miss horizotally
aligned. This means that in the list views in the program you can only
read the top half of all the characters.
Has anyone got any

A new era in Radio! Don't miss The Experimental Beat! (fwd)
Hello,
Excuse the blatent self-promotion and certain degree of off-topicness, but
I thought people here might find this of interest.
We just recorded a radio show using Fideliphone (www.fideliphone.com)
which uses CELT. Not sure exactly which version but the most recent
release of Fideliphone was in May so it's probably not the most recent
version. Anyway it performed beautifully!

Autoconfigure miss on Solaris 8 x86 (2.3.0p1)
Your configure checks for u_int*_t in <sys/types.h> and checks
for them in <sys/bitypes.h> only together with int*_t.
I have BIND 8.2.2-P5, and use it's include files with OpenSSH.
BIND's bitypes.h defines only the unsigned types, so the second
test fails, and then the first compilation during 'make' fails
because of a redefinition of u_int*_t.
