36 FPS using ubuntu-classic desktop, drops to 4 FPS xubuntu
Hello Recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 and not liking unity I swtiched to xubuntu but was perturbed to find my World of Warcraft FPS drop from 36 FPS in Ubuntu 10.10 and Ubuntu 11.04 'ubuntu classic' down to 3/4 FPS xubuntu. Again, to confirm it wasn't anything in the upgrade I made sure that the FPS is as normal in 11.04 when I select 'Ubuntu Classic' when logging in rather

Ubuntu repo versus WINE
On installing Xubuntu 11.04 yesterday I installed WINE via synaptic, selecting the package 'wine' manually which seems to have then installed 'wine1.2' and then some other packages. [Image: http://oi51.tinypic.com/s4za78.jpg ] I was going to add the WINE repo to upgrade to 1.3 when I saw the package already exists in synaptic. My question is why doesn't Ubuntu use 1.3 which

How to switch workspaces from WoW? Tried virtual desktop.
Wine 1.2.2 Xubuntu 11.04 (xfce) HD Radeon 4650 I have just installed a new video card and I am unable to switch between my virtual workspaces while World of Warcraft is running. With my old card Nvidia 7300 LE I was able to do this if I wanted to check something on the internet and then go straight back into the game etc. I have emulated a virtual desktop of size 1280x1024 and I also have tried

nVIDIA on CentOS 3.3
Hey, I tried it. The short answer is that nVIDIA cards are OK for text, but may not work at all under X. I downloaded the 3.3 ISO's, and burned new CD's. I did an X desktop install on a test bench P3 600 MHz system with a 4.3 gig drive. I did the install with a known-to-work Voodoo Banshee card to get the system going. I used a Mag DX1495 monitor, which I know does not to work on

residual plots
I've fit a linear model to my data set using the <lm> function. One of the outputs of that function is a vector of the residuals. I would like to do a residual plot of this data versus a predictor variable, but the length of the residual vector is shorter than the length of the predictor variable vector. This is because when <lm> computes the residual vector, it deletes entries

Re: more about nVIDIA on Linux^h^h^h^h^h RedHat
Hey, I have two bits of info that suggest this is more of a RedHat problem than a Linux problem: 1) A high school friend had exactly this problem (screen when blank when booting up) on a computer running RedHat 9. (A different monitor had been used to install RedHat 9, and that monitor worked OK. Later, my high school friend got a different monitor, which went blank on boot up.) I solved the

Re: NVIDIA on Linux
Hello scty library, I had huge problems with NVIDIA cards on Linux. The screen would go blank as soon as X tried to load. I only tried using the driver that came with CentOS. After lots of parts swapping, I found that the monitor (obviously) and (even) the motherboard make a difference. > If so what did you do about it. Finally, I gave up on NVIDIA cards -- I got a Voodoo Banshee

Listmates, I have a fresh openSuSE 10.3 install with all updates installed, the video card is a MSI nVidia 8600GT (pci-e 16). Symlink outside the share path
Hello everyone -- I am stumped on this issue, mostly because I'm not quite sure if it's behaving correctly or not. I believe this used to work and right now I'm not quite sure why it's no longer doing so and how to fix it (if possible). I suspect it is because of my recent update of the OS and Samba version. When users are trying to follow a symlink that goes to a different

Cox proportional hazards confidence intervals
I am calculating cox propotional hazards models with the coxph function from the survival package. My data relates to failure of various types of endovascular interventions. I can successfully obtain the LR, Wald, and Score test p-values from the coxph.object, as well as the hazard ratio as follows: formula.obj = Surv(days, status) ~ type coxph.model = coxph(formula.obj, df) fit =

Nvidia 8600 Performance Issue
Hello all, I'm running a Dell XPS 1530M system with a 2.4 GHz Core 2 duo and Nvidia 8600M GT 256 MB graphics card with 4 GB RAM and Compiz 0.7.2 on OpenSuse 10.3 (KDE) with the Nvidia .169.12 drivers. I have all the usual fixes for Nvidia cards enabled (ARGB-GLX-visuals, Composite) but Compiz frequently slows down the system and certain windows take as much as 2 seconds to refresh. The
