Ok, here's what seems to be going on. When a JPG is put into a share it inherits permissions of 540. When I chmod it to 740 it appears in file browsers. So the file is actually there, but invisible. You have the setting on to HIDE files that can't be written to. Try turning that off. Next, investigate why it's causing the files to get 540 permissions instead of 740 (or other).
