passing function parameters into a 'with' statement to dynamically pick out columns
Hi, I've built a function to generate plots and would like to be able pass in column names as a parameter. Here's a boiled down version of what I have right now: pmts <- data.frame(date=c(1,2,3), all=c(5,6,7),maj=c(4,5,6),ind=c(3,4,5)) perc.mktshare <- function(df){ range1 <- floor(min(with(df, 100*ind/all))) range2 <- ceiling(max(with(df, 100*ind/all)))

Panel Data Analysis in R
You wrote: Ø Dear All, Ø Can anyone provide me with reference notes(or steps) towards analysis of?? (un)balanced panel data in R. Ø Thank you! The "plm" package does panel data analysis in R. See the vignette at: cran.r-project.org/web/packages/plm/vignettes/plm.pdf. There are other similar articles by the same authors, Yves Croissant and Giovanni Millo, and one of these is the

Spacing in the labels using xyplot()
We have a variable that we use to label bars in barplot() and to condition on in xyplot(). Since the labels can be quite long, we use strwrap() on-the-fly to split the strings into several "lines" separated by "\n". With barplot, this works nicely using text(), but with xyplot() it doesn't. In the latter, the labels appear to be "double-spaced" compared to the

WINE and older games
I know that there is always the push for the latest and greatest games to be working under WINE, but it's always been a little irritating to me, that as the owner of systems that tend to not be up to par to playing the latest and greatest, that older DirectX 7 and below games really don't feel like they've been giving the TLC that they may deserve. I've been an ongoing quest for

Introducing MailJack: autogenerate querystring parameters that are appended to links in your emails
Hey All, I just wrote a nifty gem and wanted to share(its one of my first). Wondering if anyone would be so kind as to tell me what they think and/or code review it. MailJack - its like LoJack but for the links in your emails. The problem this solves is the ability to track click throughs in emails. https://github.com/synth/mail_jack Basically, you specify what mailers you want to track

Thief 2 crashes after a few minutes
Hello everyone. Long time wine user, first time poster. I've been trying to get Thief 2 to work. It installed without a hitch, and by all accounts runs perfectly, but after about 3 or 4 minutes of game play, it freezes up on me and I have to kill the process. No amount of googling or studying the appdb entry has been able to help me. It would be much appreciated if someone could give me

Help with POSIXct
I rarely work with dates in R, so I know very little about the POSIXct and POSIXlt classes. I'm importing an excel file into R using the RODBC package, and am having issues reformatting the dates. 1. Various NUT issues/questions
Hi, FINALLY got my UPS working, YEA!!!! But now it brings up even more issues.. (BOOO!!) 1) I'm thinking this is a UPS issue, but when I pull the plug on my UPS, it goes from 100 to 30 in just a short amount of time (Minutes). This causes the machine to shut down. But once it gets to 0, its beeped its little heart out for a few more HOURS providing power to the non-system items perfectly.

Game install, Microsoft DirectX (tm) limitation.
I have recently been trying to install a game made for Windows 95 titled Thief: The Dark Project. Unfortunately it seems to be having a problem with some sort of DirectX limitation. I am extremely inexperienced in dealing with wine so please if there is any more information I can give you, feel free to ask. Upon activation on the install executable (wine setup.exe) the install process appears to

Re: Slashdot: "Could Microsoft buy Red Hat?" -- this is a joke made by the clueless
From: Nigel Kendrick <support-lists at petdoctors.co.uk> > Sorry if it wraps: > http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/05/16/1758249&tid=109&tid=163&tid=110&tid=98&tid=218 This has _nothing_ to do with Microsoft possibly buying Red Hat. People who even suggest this only expose their *0* understanding of business. Microsoft has an alliance with Sun. Why?

Password encription
The use of salt, today, is to prevent the attacker from directly seeing who has same passwords. Of course it also will make a rainbow table attack less useful, but then again, no one uses rainbow tables anymore since it takes about few minutes to brute force a password in the cloud or on your home computer GPU. SHA512-CRYPT uses by default 4000 rounds on dovecot, to make it more computationally

how do I build panel data/longitudinal data models with AR terms using the plm package or any other package
Hi All, I am doing econometric modeling of panel data (fixed effects). We currently use Eviews to do this, but I have discovered a bug in Eviews 7 and am exploring the use of R to build panel data models / longitudinal data models. I looked at the plm package but do not see how I can incorporate AR terms in the model using the plm package. I have an Eviews model with two AR terms, AR(1) and

upssched. Again.
Hi everyone, Here I am with my second attempt to persuade upssched to do things; for some reasons it just won't! Or if it runs, it never runs the script. OK, the story first: 2.0.3 (conveniently comes as RPMs by default on FC6) running on FC6; APC Smart-UPS 750 via serial connection all working fine. Here are the main files: /etc/sysconfig/ups SERVER=yes MODEL=apcsmart DEVICE=/dev/ttyS0

Skype-to-Asterisk(SIP): progress
I'm sitting in the Emerging Telephony Conference, so this seems a particularly apt place to pre-announce this... I've wanted to be able to gateway calls between Skype and Asterisk for a while, which of course would require some type of protocol converter (IAX or SIP to Skype, probably.) This of course is directly not in Skype's interest, since they would like to keep the network
