system() and file names with spaces
Consider the question we had recently: "how do I count the lines in a file without reading it into R?" The solution I suggested was as.numeric(system(paste("wc -l <", filename), TRUE)) Unfortunately, it doesn't work, or at least, not all the time. If you already know all about that, and don't care, or already have a solution, stop reading now. Otherwise, let

time to say good-bye to win 7 / printer is the last blocker
I have picked up the HP LaserJet 1022n on eBay. It is black and white only, but works well with Linux and all versions of Windows I have available. They are generally inexpensive on eBay and the tone is cheap. I can get 4 toner cartridges for around $25 on eBay. It is small, dependable, and makes a good second printer. Most printing is usually black and white. I actually have 3 of them

Ampersand Heartburn
Greetings all. I''m using the Microsoft "NorthWind Traders" database "orders" table as test data for the Rico LiveGrid JavaScript. The problem I''m noticing is that some of the records in the "ShipName" field contain ampersands -- which for some reason are not being escaped by Rails. Rails does in fact automatically escape all of the other

Totally newbie need to setup rsync
Howdy! I am totally new to rsync and most UNIX things. We have two servers running SCO OpenServer 3.2 Ver 5.0.6. One of the servers is our live operation and the second is our backup server. I need to keep data from operation server up-to-date in our backup server and that's where 'rsync' comes in. I already downloaded binaries, unzipped and restored to disk but have no idea where

two bugs in rsync 3.0.6 - ampersands in filenames, double quoting required
1) deleting path/to/(Something) Word Word Anotherword--Word Word.pdf IO error encountered -- skipping file deletion I think either the -- is causing it to fail, or more likely, the next filename, which it didn't bother to print out, which has an ampersand in the name, causes it to fail. I am using SSH as a substrate, of course, and I think you guys failed to escape things, so the ampersand

Multidimensional contingency tables
How does one ideally handle and display multidimenstional contingency tables in R v. 2.6.2? E.g.: > prob1<- data.frame(victim=c(rep('white',4),rep('black',4)), + perp=c(rep('white',2),rep('black',2),rep('white',2),rep('black',2)), + death=rep(c('yes','no'),4), count=c(19,132,11,52,0,9,6,97)) > prob1 victim perp

Ampersand in Folder names causing folders to disappear?
Hi All, Dovecot 1.0.rc7 Not sure if this is a problem with Outlook, or with Dovecot, or to do with encoding in Linux. Whenever a user enters an ampersand into an IMAP folder name, it dissapears from outlook. These folders appear on the ext3 filesystem as &- for example drwx------ 5 mailusers mailusers 4096 2006-10-10 17:54 .INBOX.Networks.London Networks.NDCs.WH&-P joint working

Ampersand in Auto Complete Entry Broken
Hi, I have been playing around with the autocomplete field in Rails 0.13. I have noticed that if I have an ampersand in the value such as "A&E", if I click on the entry in the autocomplete list, I am left with just A in the text box. I have narrowed it down to: String.unescapeHtml() in prototype.js as what strips the & and what follows it from the value. It strips it

interpretation of p values for highly correlated logistic analysis
Dear list, I want to perform a logistic regression analysis with multiple categorical predictors (i.e., a logit) on some data where there is a very definite relationship between one predicator and the response/independent variable. The problem I have is that in such a case the p value goes very high (while I as a naive newbie would expect it to crash towards 0). I'll illustrate my problem

OT - SIP MESSAGE, newline chars and formatting
Hi, I'm using a SIP phone (Thomson ST2030) which is able to display text received though Asterisk's SendText() application. I'm using this to display from Asterisk "Forwarded to 0123456789" whenever a user forwards his calls to another number or extension. Test is displayed with white letters on black background. What I can't do at the moment is erasing this

decimal seperator
Hi R-List, I have a question regarding R-language formats, I think. I am producing a series of graphs (using plot, barplot, barchart, and bwplot, using either text or mtext to place values on the graphs) and tables for a Francophone country. In fact, I have already done so. However, while they are pleased with the results they've requested I convert all of my decimal points into the French

[PATCH server] updated anyterm/ovirt integration
host static anyterm content locally, url parameterize anyterm rows/cols/general param update spec/makefile Ideally I wanted and tried hard to put all this into a seperate ovirt-server--anyterm subpackage, but we cannot 'reopen' the ovirt server virtual host defined in ovirt-server.conf to add the neccessary rewrite rules. it would be nice to figure out a way to do this ---

extracting the t-statistic: just the numbers, please
Hi, there I am quite sure there is an easy answer to this, but I am unsure how to gather a bunch of t-statistics in an organized format. I am trying to generate a list of t-statistics for a randomization routine. If I try to collect a bunch of t-statistics from a run, this is what happens: > M <- 10 ; simt <- NULL > for(i in 1:M) + { + perm<-sample(site,replace=F) + +

Text Contrast in a Plot
Hi List, I would appreciate any suggestion on how can I make a text I’ve inserted in a plot show some contrast? With this I mean that I have a white text on a plot and I would like to make a tiny border around it in black, so even being small sized and the entire graphic being small in the text page I’ll insert it. It will be visible. Well I tried inserting a box() function inside the text()

Wireframe graph: black and white shading instead of color
All, The code below produces a color 3D graph. I'd like to make it black and white shading. I tried setting col.regions to FALSE but this just made it completely white. I want the graph to look exactly as is, except black (or grey) and white shading. Is this possible? Cheers, David p.list = c(.01, .1, .25, .5, .75, .9) cov.list = c(.2, .1, .05) ### leave out .01 X = rep(p.list, 3)
