Something I always recommend, when I hear about screens turning grey for any app, is disable Ubuntu's Visual Effects. Especially if you have an older system. Those effects have caused me numerous headaches in the past, including with ddo. Seeing the same thing here, similar specs. I took a wander through the forums and it seems that this is not a Wine only thing, there's at least a couple windows users running into the same exact problem. Dunno if this changes anything or helps at all, but it's at least a known problem
