Backgroundrb spiking CPU after first run on Mongrel cluster
I''ve been troubleshooting this problem for several hours now and haven''t
been able to figure out what''s wrong. I have two boxes, dev and prod, both
are identical except that prod uses Ruby 1.8.5 and dev uses 1.8.4. Both are
running Slave 1.2.0, Daemons 1.0.5, and Backroundrb 0.2.1.
The behavior I''m seeing is this. When I first start Backgroundrb, this is

trouble using ActiveRecord classes
I''ve been trying unsuccessfully for the better part of today to write a
worker that can use by ActiveRecord model classes.
The bizarre thing is that worker just stops at the point accessing the
database connection. An exception isn''t raising, it just dies.
My worker class is below, I''ve interspersed log messages throughout to try
to determine where it is dying.

Yet Another Problem with BackgroundRB
Hi!
My cron-based worker is being indeed invoked by backgroundRB at
correct times. But... After several runs it can no longer find DB
columns! The same query, which was running OK an hour ago starts to
throw MySQL error about unkown column in where clause. If I restart
backgroundrb it works for some time but stops working after several
invocations.
Has anyone epxerienced the similar beahviour?

Behaviour of pool_size setting
Hi,
I have backgroundrb running to decouple the execution of massive
business logic from an ActionWebservice request. The service is designed
to take some configuration parameters and fire a lot of background
workers to do the requested work. Due to performance reasons I want to
limit the number of workers to a maximum number of 30. But when I start
a configuration that requires for example

loading C extension in worker causes bus error on OS X only
In all likelihood, this doesn''t have anything to do with backgroundrb,
but I''m stuck so I thought someone might be able to help.
I have a pretty simple C extension that I built into a gem and have
installed on my system. It works fine when required from rails
(1.2.1).
But when I have a Backgroundrb worker class use the extension (under
os x), I get:

Intermittent "can''t convert Float into Hash" and results.rb
Hi,
I''m using backgroundrb 0.2.1 in a production environment and for most
parts I''m very happy. We are using it to do some heavy video editing on
the server side and it works great except that under, what seems heavy
load the below problem happens intermittently.
The problem has only happened 5 times out of over 500 runs by our
backgroundrb worker.
This is the code in our

MiddleMan.worker blocks?
Hello -
I am observing that calls to MiddleMan.worker return only after the worker
has completed its work. This puzzles me, and I presume that I am doing
something wrong. Can anyone make suggestions?
Snippets from my code are:
class ReportController < SecurityController
...
def create_xml_report(report,start_time)
constraints = get_constraints(report,start_time,false)

Backgroundrb keeps spawning processes
Hi!
I''ve just a created a really simple rails scheduled worker for
backgroundrb to start playing with :
class SessionCleanerWorker < BackgrounDRb::Worker::RailsBase
def do_work(args)
logger.info "SessionCleaner> started"
CGI::Session::ActiveRecordStore::Session.destroy_all( [''updated_at
<?'', 120.minutes.ago] )

worker starting twice
Hi gang,
Thanks to other help I''ve gotten on this list, I''ve got backgroundrb
up and running using postgres alongside my rails app. I''ve designed
the system to have several eternally-running workers that periodically
poll the database to see if there''s any work for them to do, and set
things up in the config file to make them restart quickly if any of
them

Newbie - Is BackgrounDRb compatible on windows ?
I searched online but couldn''t find it. Even BackgrounDRb does not
specify platform compatibility. Earlier version of BackgrounDRb ( <
0.2 ) were incompatible with windows. The current version of
BackgrounDRb is 1.3. If anybody had any luck running this library on
windows machine ?

postgres barfage revisted
First of all, I''d like to do what I''ve seen several others here do:
thank Ezra and any other contributors for producing a really great
plugin. Even though I''m having some minor problems, this is all so
approachable and easy to work with and dig into... I hate to think of
the hoops you''d need to jump through (both as creator of such a system
and as a user) to

[BUG] worker stopping abruptly
I have been facing this damn ugly issue since quite sometime.
So this worker reads RSS feed from Yahoo news and stores it in a DB.
The worker is scheduled to run at every 40 minutes and my
background_schedules.yml looks like this:
feed_worker:
:class: :feed_worker
:job_key: :feed_worker_key
:worker_method: :do_work
:trigger_args:

Stopping DRb after using BackgrounDRb::MiddleManDRbObject.init
Hi,
I''m having a problem where connections started through
BackgrounDRb::MiddleManDRbObject.init are not stopped, resulting in an
ever growing established connections between my Mongrels and remote
backgroundrbs
I added DRb.stop_service to my code executed after requests that init
MiddleManDRbObjects but that does not help.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Backgroundrb weirdness with multiple mongrels
Hi list,
I''m having some issues getting backgroundrb to play nice with more than
one mongrel. When I run my app on a single mongrel instance it works
fine.
I have two different problems show up in my backgrounrb_server.log. The
top of the backtrace is shown here:
20070130-12:03:03 (92473) failed to find slave socket - (RuntimeError)

Recommendations for eternally-running backgroundrb workers?
I''ve got some workers that I want to have running all the time. Right
now I''m just launching them manually, by requesting a special page in
my rails app that includes lines like:
MiddleMan.new_worker(:class=> :receiver, :job_key=>:r,
:args=>{:sleep_time=>10})
This strikes me as a really weak way to fire up my workers. I
basically want to automate things so

Creating another database connection for large mysql import?
I''m using backgroundrb to periodically download a large file via ftp from a
remote location and then import it into the database. To perform the
import, I was using the following:
ActiveRecord::Base.connection.execute(%{load data infile ...;})
although on a file with 2.5 million records, this can take 5 minutes, which
seems to tie up my rails application while this executes (even

Can BackgrounDrb help me?
I have a big report to produce from a Rails app that takes several minutes
to put together. I hoped backgroundrb would be able to pull together all
the ActiveRecord stuff in the background then throw it back to Rails for
rendering.
It seems, however, that I can''t pass an array of ActiveRecord objects from
the worker back to Rails. Do I have that right?
Another possibility was to do

example code for file upload
I have an archiving application that handles large file uploads. I
already use backgroundrb to run a behind the scenes bulk import of
records. All good. Thank you Ezra.
Now I would like to add long running file uploads to the things that
backgroundrb does for me. That''s right that ole chestnut. I''ve seen
a lot of mention of this practice around the web, but have yet

Repeatedly dying with "failed to find slave socket"
I''m struggling to keep backgroundrb v2 running for more than 24
hours. It appears to be running fine for a while, then tries to fire
off a worker (exactly the same worker it''s been running for the past
few hours), and it suddenly dies. I haven''t found any pattern for the
cause of this.
In backgroundrb_server.log, the final entry is this :

Deploying to production with backgroundrb (capistrano)
I have noticed that occasionally (about 50% of the time) when i
deploy (using capistrano) my app to a production server, i have to
ssh into the box and manually
stop and start backgroundrb to get it to load my workers.
this is my basic setup
i have 2 workers:
lib/workers/mp3_worker.rb => takes a hash of params to downsample an
mp3
lib/workers/flv_worker.rb => takes a has of
