Office 2007 is a half ass work'n
I have a subscription to MS TechNET.
I wanted to use office 2010 but was told in another thread that was not going to happen. At least not yet.
So I have defaulted to Office 2007 Enterprise.
Word is up and working and seems to have no issues. Excel and Access are another problem however.
When I try to run another app other then Word, I get an Microsoft Office error that says: "Microsoft

But there are still some problems.

Resuming the discussion of establishing an LLVM code of conduct
I won't disagree about a level of professionalism or what the
community does or doesn't need. However, I'd say that pragmatically if
profanity was an issue in the workplace, for a large development
community, that LKML would have run afoul a long time ago.
My view -
I'm only replying because the reality is that in the workplace
sometimes a full lexicon of words are spoken. I

Somewhat OT: OpenOffice.org Headless issues as non-root user
Hi,
I've installed recently OpenOffice.org 3.1 on Centos 5.3. I use OOo in
headless mode. I have no problem when running as root, but I'd prefer
run it as non-root user (oooserver user). When I run the script in
debug mode this is the output:
sh -x /tmp/ooo-headless-nonroot start
+ . /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions
++ TEXTDOMAIN=initscripts

Staroffice compatibility
So, I thought I'd install staroffice on my system. (It didn't really
install correctly, but hey, that's a topic for a different usenet
group.)
Once I had it installed under the /opt directory structure, when I
tried to fire up my wineified email client, I got a host of errors
referring to fonts. Then when Agent opened, it immediately crashed
with an error to the effect of

Emulation vs Virtualization
Would someone please explain in simple english what the functional
differences are between emulation & virtualization are as far as being able
to run Windows applications under Unix / Linux in a "real world" (ie
commercial office) environment ??
For what its worth I'd prefer to use an open source unix (FreeBSD / OpenBSD)
rather than linux, however there are other issues

Profanity Filter for Rails Application
I am creating an application that allows a user to post messages to a
board. I want to be able to filter profanity. For instance if someone
types an inappropriate word of 5 characters I want it to read "#?@#@" or
whatever. Ideally, I would be able to install a rails plugin or ruby gem
and then simply write
Code : - fold - unfold
--> message_text.hide_profanity! <--

paper size in postscript driver
I have a non-PS printer setup to print under linux using ghostscript as a
filter. This printer has two paper trays, one has letter paper, the other
tabloid size paper. If I print from a program that uses a PPD file to
configure the printer, like StarOffice or The Gimp, I can select the paper
size from a nifty list. If I select letter size, the printer print with
paper from the letter tray. If

CIFS + NFS'ing a single filesystem w/ locking
Hi,
I have a Solaris 10 server exporting UFS directories using built-in NFS.
I've built Samba 3.0.20b from OpenPKG (www.openpkg.org). I have a
Solaris 10 (x86) client mounting the NFS share and opening OpenDocument
files using StarOffice 8 (SO8, aka OO2.0). I also have a Windows 2003
Terminal Server mounting the Samba share and opening documents with SO8.
This is a temporary development

Upgraded to 4.8 - forced to use winbindd - retro how to missing?
We recently upgraded a test server to samba-4.8.3.... but wonder how to
reproduce the legacy behavior with winbind now forced into the picture for
better or worse.
We specifically do not want any of the whiz-bang capabilities of winbind,
just the old familiar mapping of windows usernames to unix usernames.
It seems not sufficient to omit winbind settings in smb.conf; i.e., the
defaults force the

Worth upgrading desktop to 5.1?
I am using CentOS 5.0 on my desktop workstation. Are there any deeply
compelling reasons to upgrade to version 5.1? I read through the release
notes but didn't see any whiz-bang new features. Perhaps some of you can
share your personal experience letting us know if you have noticed any
differences, etc.

Scatterplot question
Dear list members,
I have a probably simple question concerning scatterplots: I want to
draw a plot with one X but several Y columns, so that every group
of samples gets a different symbol. My table looks like this:
X Y1 Y2 Y3
1 1
2 3
3 5
4 7
5 9
6 11
7 13
8 15
Simple in Excel or StarOffice, but how do I do it in R?
Thanks a lot
