Windows CLI Commands in Ruby freeze Wine application
I use a Wine application (Google SketchUp) that has Ruby as scripting language. I want to issue commands to the Windows cmd from within SketchUp/Ruby. When I write on the Ruby console in SketchUp:
puts `dir`
or
puts `cd`
it should return the result of that command, but it freezes SketchUp and the gnome-terminal gives this error after some seconds:
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section

state of OpenGL in software rendering
Hi,
I have a general question:
Is "OpenGL in software" (versus hardware acceleration) considered to work in most cases in Wine, or is it not yet enough implemented?
As far as I have been informed, this feature of Google SketchUp does the export of 2d images from a 3d scene via OpenGL "in software" rendering:

linux and wine noob needs help with installing SketchUp
I have Ubuntu 10.04 and just installed WINE 1.2 (because it's stable version).
I am installing SketchUp 8, and the installer asks what destination folder to install to. It defaults to
"C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 8\"
and won't let me change to the Linux format of
"home/user/Sketchup"
that I think is correct. What do I do? The Wine FAQ states:

Start native linux apps from a wine app
Hi to all! This is my first post!
I'm trying to use carbide.ui with wine and it works well.
But I've got a problem: this apps needs to use an external, selectable app to edit images and sound files. I don't want to install gimp for windows on wine to integrate it, so I would like to know if is there any way to start a completely native application from a windows app, just like wine

Google SketchUp 7 won't start again.
About 3 weeks ago I downloaded and installed Sketchup 7 on my Ubuntu Jaunty linux machine with Wine 1.1.22 installed. Since then I have started Sketchup several times and it has always started. Well, day before yesterday I was actually going to use it, but when I launched it all I got was the icon in the taskbar telling me that Sketchup was starting, and then it went away. No error messages or

Sketchup 7 and proxy settings.
Hi everyone,
I've got stuck trying to get Sketchup 7 ( Version 7.1.6860 ) to connect to the 3D warehouse via a proxy using Wine 1.1.38 (same problem with older version 1.1.35) on a linux machine ( Gentoo, Kernel 2.6.32.3 )
I have followed the instructions for setting up a proxy for Wine from:

Wine integration in Ubuntu 11.04
There are several changes where this distribution develops away from classic desktops:
- maximized windows use panel instead of title bar
- global menu
- overlay scrollbars
I guess the last two will stay as inconsistencies for a long time (if not someone manages to get the windows menu into the panel), but I thought that maximised windows shouldn't behave different than they used to.
However

Google Sketchup 6.x works, but only with xserver-xgl.
wine version: 1.0-rc4
- Installing Sketchup works fine with some minor issues.
- Running Sketchup will result in the following error message:
"Sketchup was unable to initialize OpenGL! Please make sure you have installed the correct drivers for your graphics card. Error: ChoosePixelFormat failed",
and after that the application closes down. As mentioned in several of the test

Let Wine program pop up URL links in default browser, NOT IE
A few versions back, when one of my wine'd program needed to show an URL page, it (through Wine of course) sent that link to my default browser (Firefox) in Linux. It worked like this until version 1.1.35. Starting with 1.1.36, it pops up an IE window instead, which doesn't work on the URL and I don't want. Is there a way to reset its behavior so that the link is sent to my Firefox?

1.4rc2: delayed redraw of 3d app
Since 1.4rc2, Google SketchUp does not immediately redraw the 3d drawing area, but only after the view has been invalidated another time.
That means SketchUp starts with black screen until you force it to update the view (by moving, resizing the window or orbiting or panning the view). This is also noticeable when you click, double-click or triple-click an object in order to select it: The object

Configure Wine to run only one application
I persuaded my friends to convert to Linux, now they want Sketchup!
They are the sort of people who would click on anything and I don't want them to get malware etc.
Is there a way to make Wine run *only* Sketchup and nothing else?
I did try searching for the answer but couldn't find one.
Thanks

Re: Sketchup was unable to initialize OpenGl
[Replying to a post from September...]
The "cannot initialize opengl" is bug
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14045
The workaround is to set a registry key to tell sketchup your graphics card is ok.
See
http://wiki.winehq.org/GoogleSketchup
for more tips.
Caveat: your Asus EAX1650Pro graphics card is ATI-based,
and I haven't heard any success stories yet running Sketchup

Making Wine Firefox the default browser
OK, I see posts all over the place for the opposite problem -- people want wine apps to open their linux default browser. But I have the opposite problem. I use a piece of software (GradeQuick) that only runs on Windows (and Mac sometimes when it feels like it). But it runs by first opening the web page which called it (www.edline.net), and it will not run through Linux. So when I click,
