Comet style requests with mongrel
Hi,
I''ve been doing some experiments with php and if can use something like
<?php
for ($i = 0; $i < 100; $i++) {
echo "hello world";
flush();
sleep(10);
}
?>
to keep a http link open for an arbitrary amount of time and
routinely display "hello world" in the browser window.
Is is possible to write a mongrel handler to do something similar?
Thanks

x_send_file sends a 1 byte file
Hello,
sorry if creating a dupe...
I''m trying to download files to authenticated users in my app. I''ve set
up x_send_file. All seems to be correct to me, however when I try to
download any file, I get a 1-byte long file downloaded.
I am getting this already in development - so no Apache, no lighthttpd,
just a mongrel_rails start in the root of my app.
Any help/hint would be

Automatic Scaling
Hi,
I''ve got an app which will only be dealing with a few requests a
minute for most of the time, then will shoot up to a continuous 20
req/s for an hour at a time. We''ll potentially be running a lot of
instances of this app on the same server.
Is there any way to have additional instances of Mongrel be started
when the existing instance(s) stopping being able to handle

sendfile and mongrel
forgive me if this has been resolved already...
I have an app that is using sendfile to return large files to customers.
We can''t use regular Apache to handle this static content since the
files are what the customers are paying for - so it wouldn''t be cool for
anyone else to get access to them.
The issue is that the mongrel mem footprint gets bloated when the files

byte-range requests
I''m trying to sent a file to the iphone (which requires byte-range
request support) using the rails send_file method. However, this
fails, I think because of mongrel. I think so because if I send the
iphone a file handled by nginx, it plays it fine. But then when I
serve the file with rails the iphone can''t play it.
Any ideas?

Mongrel and memory usage
Hello,
I''m running a Rails application which must sort and manipulate a lot of data
which are loaded in memory.
The Rails app runs on 2 mongrel processes.
When I first load the app, both are 32Mb in memory.
After some days, both are between 200Mb and 300Mb.
My question is : is there some kind of garbage collector in Mongrel?
I never see the two Mongrel processes memory footprint

Can I turn off config.action_view.cache_template_loading in Production
I''ve got an app which users can edit the ERB templates for emails, the
changes aren''t taking effect till the app restarts though because
config.action_view.cache_template_loading = true
I''ve seen various comments that suggest it has to be true when in
Production for thread safety - is Rails actually running in a threaded
manner yet? Surely this is a none issue at the

Mongrel + Lighttpd
Hi guys,
I''ve been chasing a problem in my web-stack: Lighttpd -> Mongrel ->
Rails, and found a problem with the interaction of Lighttpd and Mongrel.
If a request takes more than 5 seconds, Lighty will retry it - and
then the requests / responses get mixed up in Lighty and it returns a
bad response to the client. Not good.
I''m convinced that the problem is

XSendFile problem
I am trying to user XSendFile in my application.
I have installed the plugin and in the environment.rb included this line
XSendFile::Plugin.replace_send_file!
but it is unable to read the files.
Earlier i had used send_file but it increases the mongrel size and slows
down the application.
Any suggestions about how to make it work?

SystemStackError from redirect_to
Hi
I''ve got a straightforward piece of code in my controller which will
consistently produce a SystemStackError.
@newmessage = @message.reply(params[:newmessage])
return unless request.post?
if @newmessage.save
flash[:notice] = "Message Sent"
redirect_to :index
end
The error is occuring on the redirect_to line, if I comment that line
out then everything behaves as it

streaming video with mongrel
Hi, on my site I have several screen casts (using flash video flv) in
addition to the normal rails application which is the core service,
my setup is apache proxy/balancing to 2 mongrels.
I was thinking I should probably not be serving up streaming video
from mongrel as it will occupy the mongrel processes for long periods
of time right?
So I was thinking of excluding a directory from

strange bugs while using mongrel, while running in development (and also sometimes in production mode)
Following errors are taken from monrgrel running in development mode. It
complained routes.rb, no such file or directory and then sometimes i get
application.rb, no such file or directory.Doesn''t seem correct to me.
Though not so often, but even production servers throw these errors
sometimes, and i have no special routes setup or something.Its pretty much
default one, except few changes

X-Sendfile doesn''t work
Hi everyone,
I try to use the "X-Sendfile" header, but it doesn''t work as expected.
In my controller:

headers[''X-Sendfile''] = path
headers[''Content-Type''] = "application/octet-stream"
headers[''Content-Length''] = File.size(path)

[WARNING] don''t use ruby-sendfile
Hi Folks,
I''ve been getting reports of people with serious stability problems in
Mongrel. These problems go away instantly when they remove
ruby-sendfile.
If your mongrel starts up saying that you have "sendfile installed" and
that it is using it then **you are wrong**. Remove the gem and don''t
use it.
I''ll be investigating why it doesn''t really

x-sendfile
I wrote an x-sendfile thing for the railshandler to get mongrel to catch
the response header and stream out files from an application I''m writing
but I''m pretty sure that zed said he''d built in x-sendfile somewhere
already. I couldn''t find it, could someone lead me to it?
Does mongrel work with SSL? If not is anyone interested in having
someone write in SSL

Rails byte-range request support
Hi,
I''m trying to serve the iPhone a video file from my controller using
send_file. However, it appears as thought the iPhone requires byte-
range request support and rails doesn''t seem to support this.
If I give the iPhone a url that points to an actual file (i.e. it''s
served by my webserver nginx, instead of rails) it downloads and plays
it fine.
Here is the proof
