Pros & Cons - Microsoft Office on Macintosh OS X
Hello Boys and Girls and Everybody.
I have recently started using a Macintosh computer to replace the dinosaur of an unbelievably unreliable PC that I have been using for the last 10 years. So far I have been very pleased. I have been using OpenOffice for quite a while now as I find it is mostly superior to Microsoft Office in many ways, HOWEVER - OpenOffice lacks the Voice Recognition Software

Hi, i'm just starting with Linux, and by ny job I have

Writing Reports from R in Microsoft Office Open XML format (follow-up)
Dear Duncan and other R users,
The department in which I work will soon make some decisions to
improve our reporting. Since I hope that our solution will support R
and Sweave-like functionality (otherwise it wouldn't be an
improvement....), I hope it's ok to repeat my question back from June
if there are any news on an odfWeave-like package for weaving
Microsoft Word documents? (in the

Trying to get up and running with Open Office beta
I was using the beta version of Open Office on Windows for... I don't
know how long, but many months now. I quite like it and would like to
replace the current stable 1.1 build of OpenOffice that came with CentOS
with the beta.
So i downloaded the RPMs from the OpenOffice site and dutifully followed
their installation instructions, and it went well. I think. I mean,
there were no errors

OpenOffice.org 3.1 installation was corrupted-installed again, nothing in Applications/Office menu
I had a corrupted installation of OpenOffice.org 3.1.
When I used "yum remove openoffice.org-core" the response was "package
openoffice.org-core available but not installed", but then, when I
used "yum install openoffice.org-core there was a long list of
Transaction Check Errors. I then removed
openoffice.org3.1-redhat-menus-noarch which was in the errors.

Reading microsoft .xls format and openoffice OpenDocument files
1. I have used gdata::read.xls() with much happiness. But every now
and then it breaks. I have not, as yet, been able to construct a
mental model about the class of .xls files for which it works. Does
someone have a simple rule for predicting the circumstances under
which it will work?
2. Just like there is a read.xls(), it'd be great if we have a
read.ods() which directly

installing Microsoft Office under wine
I have been unable to install Microsoft Office 2000 under wine on
several Fedora Linux machines. The problem seemed to start with the
June 2004 release of wine and has persisted for every version I have
tried up to and including the latest 12/01/2004 version.
I have tried both RPM install and compiling from source with similar
results.
I have one machine running the May 2004 wine that

Including graphics files in MS office / open office
Hi all,
I'm trying to write up some recommendations for what graphics formats
are most useful for inclusion into ms office and openoffice. There
have been a few discussions on the list in the past, but I haven't
seen a summary. These are the options I've seen so far, along with
there costs and benefits:

Attention Non-Linux Wine Users
Howdy BSD/Solaris/OS X'ers,
A lot of progress has been made fixing the conformance tests for Wine,
but unfortunately, most of this progress has only been made on the
Linux end. Most developers are using some form of Linux, so
BSD/Solaris/OS X haven't seen their pass rate increase. But you can
help!
For more info, see:

But for the short version:

Microsoft "Windows for Linux"
-cross posted to comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine-
Microsoft should consider producing "Windows for Linux". It could be their
own version of Wine, but it would be nearly 100% compatible with the latest
version of Windows. Microsoft could require that users have a retail copy of
Windows to make this work.
It's a win-win situation. Linux users could run nearly all of the available

I'm considering installing MS office on my 64bit Fedora 14 laptop and I'm looking for a bit of advice. I would like to have the best shot at a getting a stable, problem free MS office suit running. So what I'd like to know is what version of wine should I install and what version of office should I get.
I looked through the app db and it seems like 2002xp and 2007 both run

Writing an automated install script
Hi!
We will start on writing an automated install script for Trados on spare time, Friday next week.
Up to then I have to prepared the script *in a way that a developer will understand what I want* and being responsible for testing it under Linux.
Basically it will be an automated script which will be timed, i.e. if no install_ok after 20 min, it would be hanging somewhere and will abort and

R2HTML package and Open Office: text only pasted
I am trying to use R2HTML (just downloaded from CRAN) to paste R (2.6.0)
results output via the clipboard to OpenOffice Writer and Calc
(version 2.3on WinXPPro)
Pasting into Excel gives a formatted table of results (as expected), but
pasting into Calc simply pastes the HTML code. Trying paste special only
gives an option to paste unformatted text.
Equally, with Writer, in the past when I tried
