Incorrect degrees of freedom for splines using GAMM4?
Hello,
I'm running mixed models in GAMM4 with 2 (non-nested) random intercepts and
I want to include a spline term for one of my exposure variables. However,
when I include a spline term, I always get reported degrees of freedom of
less than 1, even when I know that my spline is using more than 1 degree of
freedom. For example, here is the code for my model:

Changing latitude data to decimal degrees
Hi All,
I have location data set up as degrees: minutes: seconds (for example,
122:45:45) I need to get this data into decimal degree form (eg, 122.7625).
I know that I need to use the formula:
Decimal degrees = Degrees + (Minutes/60) + (Seconds/3600)
Does anyone know how I can get R to do this?
The original data is all in one column (called 'lat') and the degrees, mins and
secs

Denominator Degrees of Freedom in lme() -- Adjusting and Understanding Them
Hello all.
I was wondering if there is any way to adjust the denominator degrees of
freedom in lme(). It seems to me that there is only one method that can be
used. As has been pointed out previously on the list, the denominator
degrees of freedom given by lme() do not match those given by SAS Proc
Mixed or HLM5. Proc Mixed, for example, offers five different options for
computing the

Degrees of freedom
Hello,
I have a little problem about degree of freedom in R.
if you can help me, I will be happy.
I used nlme?function to analyze my data and run the linear mixed
effects model in R.
I did the linear mixed effect analysis in SAS?and SPSS as well.
However, R gave?the different degrees of freedom than SAS?and SPSS did.
Can you help me to learn what the reason is to obtain different

45 degree rotation is not supported in base R graphics and scatterplot3d
uses that.
You can use par(las=2)
before your code and get them rrotated by 90 degrees, or you can add

Order of terms in formula changes aov() results
Hello, This one is very perplexing. I have teacher observation data,
with factors teacher ID, observer ID, component, grade and subject. When
I do this,
aov(data=ratings.prin.22, rating ~ obsid.f + tid.f + subject.f + grade.f + comp.f)
I get this:
Terms:
obsid.f tid.f grade.f comp.f Residuals

Upgrade to latest trunk if you''re getting "undefined method `degree=''"
Facebook added the ''degree'' field to education info. This breaks
user.populate because the ''degree'' field doesn''t exist in the
education history model.
On a side note, if a method calls a dangerous method (ending with !),
shouldn''t it be classified as dangerous too?

Scatterplot3d :: Rotating x tick labels by x degrees
Hello,
David, don?t worry about answering this question or any of my inquiries in the future. Not looking for code servants. Definitely not an expert at using the scatter plot 3D library. That being said, I plan on researching rgl as was recommended so kindly on a previous response to my question.

factor names
Dear all
I have a factor variable which holds values like "Engineer", "Doctor", "Teacher"
etc. I would like to collapse those categories so that Teachers and Sociologists
form one category named "Teach & Soc" etc. However, I do not know how I can do
it. Recoding does not seem to work.
Thank you

caret: compare linear models of different degree
I want to use the caret package to train linear models. I want to
compare these models when using different degrees (aka degrees of
interaction). This is possible for the 'earth' method (using the
'.degree' parameter) but I found no possibility of customizing the
degree for the 'lm' method. This might be due to the fact that the basic
'lm' function does not support

using predict() with poly(x, raw=TRUE)
Dear r-devel list members,
I've recently encountered the following problem using predict() with a model
that has raw-polynomial terms. (Actually, I encountered the problem using
model.frame(), but the source of the error is the same.) The problem is
technical and concerns the design of poly(), which is why I'm sending this
message to r-devel rather than r-help.
To illustrate:
