Installing and maintaining R on Ubuntu 9.04 -, best practice
I had an exchange of ideas on this with Dirk E. a couple of months ago.
He can correct this if I state it wrongly, but
1) we agreed that using apt/Synaptic structure was best, but sometimes
the packages are not available
2) also that using install.packages when there is a .deb can lead to
some "confusion" (the package database on the
local system does not know about an R package

I broke wine
Ok, I was following a guide to install Office 2007 on Ubuntu 8.04 with Wine. I added exceptions (rpcrt4.dll and msxml.dll) as Native (Windows). After doing so wine broke, I can't even open winecfg to remove these exceptions. I've tried removing wine completely with Synaptic are reinstalling but nothing is helping, I currently have v 1.1.19 installed, it's still not working.

Ubuntu 7.10 Wine Issue
I can install Wine fine but whenever I try to use anything that associates with Wine (Running an exe, changing settings, ext) my computer just locks up forcing me to restart, I can't even move the mouse, and the clock even stops working on my computer.
I was wondering what I could do to fix this because I need Wine or I have to use my slow assed Windows computer.

Which version of wine am I using?
I'm currently running Ubuntu 8.10. When I search for Wine in Synaptic it tells me I have version 1.1.14 installed, but on the about tab in the Wine config window it says I'm using 0.9.60. I'm left wondering who I am being lied to by. Any ideas?

cran ubuntu repository and ubuntu 12.10
Since upgrading to quantal, I find that synaptic and apt-get cannot read
the sources.list file if it includes the previously standard line
deb http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/R/CRAN/bin/linux/ubuntu/ quantal
This line makes apt-get or synaptic give an error message identifying
this line as having a syntax error.
If "multiverse" is added at the end of the line, the line is parsed, but

How to revert to wine 1.5.4 on Ubuntu 12.04 using Synaptic?
I am using:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu
as an additional repository in Synaptic so I can use the latest (released) version of wine, 1.5.
Today, with the wine 1.5.5 update, I can no longer run World of Warcraft, so I'd like to revert to the 1.5.4 version until the latest released version works. Unfortunately, I can't force Synaptic to use 1.5.4 (perhaps because the

Update R 2.1.1-1 -> 2.2.1 on UBUNTU
I've installed Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy on my Mac. When using MacOSX, I used to
work with R 2.2.1, but now, with Ubuntu, I can't download it with
synaptic. I can only download R 2.1.1-1, and I really need 2.2.1.
I've tried to edit the sources.list file, typing
deb http://cran.R-projet.org/bin/linux/debian stable/
R/r, using a different mirror,... but when I run synaptic, it says:

Install Wine's fake-windows directory in different place
By default Wine installs its fake-windows part into $HOME.
I want rather have it on a separate partition, that I mount as /wine.
How can I do this?
What I have found was:
http://wiki.jswindle.com/index.php/Advanced_Wine_User_Information#Changing_the_location_of_Wine.27s_installation
My steps so far:
- Installed Wine with Synaptic
- # wineprefixcreate --prefix /wine
- I find the fake directory

I simply cannot install R on Ubuntu. I don't know why.
I don't mind using sudo apt-get update/upgrade/install buit I get into
crazy loops (hours) that clearly can't be trusted. But when I use
Synaptic (reload/mark for install R-base) every time I get some list
of things things it want to install as well and syas "Mark" which it
does not do and when I go forward with the Synaptic install of R-base
I get this (and abort) every time:

No sound in wine with Ubuntu 10.10, native sound works fine
Hello, i am a new Linux user as of last weekend. I successfully built my first computer and installed Ubuntu 10.10 and wine 1.2. I am using the hdmi out on my nvidia gtx 460 graphics card with on-board which works fine with standard pulseaudio for all tested native apps (system sounds, hulu on firefox, warzone 2100). I have tried every combination of winecfg audio tab settings as well as

Wine 1.1.7 and 1.0.1 not working on Intrepid 64 bit
I posted this on Ubuntuforums but after reading a bit more it seems this is mostly used for gaming questions so I decided to come here.
I am running 64 bit Ubuntu intrepid (still a beta but a release candidate). I can see Wine in my application menu but when I go to Programs/Acessories/Notepad nothing happens. I am unable to open the configuration nor am I able to uninstall using the Applications

Ubuntu repo versus WINE
On installing Xubuntu 11.04 yesterday I installed WINE via synaptic, selecting the package 'wine' manually which seems to have then installed 'wine1.2' and then some other packages.
I was going to add the WINE repo to upgrade to 1.3 when I saw the package already exists in synaptic.
My question is why doesn't Ubuntu use 1.3 which

OSLEC not being loaded on Ubuntu Intrepid
I wonder if anyone has any ideas on this.
I have recently migrated my server from a custom built Linux with
Asterisk, Zaptel and Oslec running fine, to Ubuntu Server 8.10.
I have Asterisk installed via synaptic at it works fine.
I have built and installed the zaptel package by doing the following
commands:
sudo m-a -t build zaptel
cd /usr/src
sudo dpkg -i zaptel-modules-{version}.deb

Ubuntu 16.04 dovecot-core requires deprecated ntpdate
I'm building a new Ubuntu 16.04 machine, including Dovecot.
When I select the dovecot-core package in Synaptic, it also wants to install
ntpdate.
Problem: ntpdate has been replaced in Ubuntu with timedatectl. In fact, if
ntpdate exists on the machine, ntpd will not work properly.

Lucid LTS: different Wine versions for 32 or 64 bits ?
Hello,
I 've been using Wine 1.2 wjth Ubuntu 10.04-LTS an a 64bit Asus laptop for almost one year.
In the beginning, everything worked OK (graphic refresh, focus, etc...). Now Wine works bad, I suppose some updates in Lucid do not suit Wine 1.2 (?). I tried XP mode, W98 mode (my applications are oldies ;-), but the behaviour seems bad in any case.
On this laptop, synaptic shows Wine 1.2
