VDQ Grub
Very Dumb Question : I have tried about four times now, using an old pentium2 with two hard drives (20 GB and 30 GB) to install both CentOS 4.4 and Fedora Core 6 in such a way as to enable dual-boot between them. I've tried it by installing 4.4 first, and then FC6. I've tried it by installing FC6 first, and then 4.4. I've tried it with and without giving the installer permission to

Sources for extras??
With invaluable help here, I've just gotten 6.0 onto a PC. I went through the listings in PackageKit, removing things I know I'll never use; ran yum update; installed Opera; went to the epel, rpmfusion, and one whose name slips my mind (It's a new name.); enabled them all; and tried to get a lot of my regular apps : [....] Setting up Install Process No package dillo

How do you make wine do real uninstalls?
I have tried installing various GPS/topo map software suites on four Fedora machines under wine. On three of them, the install claims to succeed; the suite fails even to launch; I try to uninstall it; the uninstall either admits failure, or pretends to succeed while leaving the software still there and clickable (but, of course, not launchable). On one, I then ran a Fedora search (beagle, I

How to make Garmin see Garmin?
I have Garmin's topo map software for the USA, 2008 version, and also a very old MapSource MetroGuide (ca. 1998) installed under wine. All is well -- except the biggest thing. Neither program can detect the etrex vista nor the rino 120, using Garmin's cables. The topo couldn't before I added the road maps,so that's not the trouble. Both, on the other (<shudder>

Adding browsers
Recently, I put CentOS 6.4 on one of the four PCs I keep behind a KVM switch. I like it a whole lot in most ways, but Fedora has spoiled me : I install almost every browser I can, and generally keep half a dozen or more open, mostly with several tens of tabs open. Iow, I use browsers as I used to use books, back in the Carboniferous when I had a desk in the stacks. Are there ways a

How fouled-up can you get??
I subscribed, and am getting emails hand over fist. They'll bust my inbox quota if I miss a day. I went to the web site for my subscription and tried to disable delivery; I'll follow this list on gmane or not at all -- and that works with every other mailman list I've tried. It wouldn't let me -- kept reverting to the password screen; I kept giving it the password, and making the

Update to Dillo browser question
Hi I asked about if there is any way of opening URLs from the help browser in the same window of the same dillo browser - here is the answer. Just to reiterate: dillo is for me the perfect browser for the help of R when you use ?... Copy data from XP to same app under Wine??
With snarls and curses and gnashing of teeth, I still keep one laptop and one dual-bootable PC hard drive with XPProSP2 installed. (Everything else is Fedora 10.) I do so purely for one class of apps, proprietary map software. Wine can now install and run at least one, and the most important, of the four suites of such apps that I have. (That one is Garmin MapSource, including Topo US

Can't get dovecot to see email folders
So I'm very frustrated, I've spent the better part of a day trying to get dovecot 2.0.1 working...Most of the documentation on the Wiki seems to think you are running an older version and therefore very little of it applies. I'm running 2.0.1 on OpenSolaris. I seem to have 2 remaining issues: 1) Dovecot is not able to determine the home directory 2) IMAP clients can not get to

More browsers!
I'm running CentOS 6 on one machine, plus my wife's. She's OK with it, but every time I use it, I miss the glorious plethora of browsers that Fedora has gotten me used to. I have epel and rpmfusion (both free and unfree) enabled; is there some other repo I can safely add? -- Beartooth Implacable, Curmudgeonly Codger Learning Linux On the Internet, you can never tell who

Changing default browser in options()
I usually startup R from within several directories (usually where the programs or data of interest are). I like to use a small web browser called dillo to browse help files. However, by default R looks for mozilla, so I have to type every single R session: > options(browser='dillo') Is there anyway I can change this globally? thanks, J.

Ruby on Rails and Fedora Core 4
I have noticed a couple of weird things going on with our code and it running completely different (causing errors where they weren''t before) between our dev environment and a new staging environment that we are setting up. My dev environment is a PowerBook running everything current except for edge rails. Our staging envronment is Fedora Core 4 Ruby 1.8.4 installed via yum

VDQ : Triple Boot Advice?
Let me set up a Very Dumb Question (VDQ). My apologies in advance for repeating much of this to those who have been of such vast help getting me this far. (Followup to: is set as gmane.linux.redhat.fedora.general) I have a testbed machine which currently has /dev/hda1 - 6, according to qtparted, with sizes 102 MB, 14 GB, 13 GB, 13 GB, 12 GB, and 14 MB respectively (rounded to nearest whole MB or

Scrabble??
Does anyone know a way to run a Scrabble program on CentOS? (I realize the obvious existence of Wine and of virtual machines; but my experience with both has been thoroughly unsatisfactory. So I'd much rather get a linux-native app.) There seem to be two proprietary Scrabble programs, one in which you play against the computer, and one in which you play against a remote friend.

Trouble installing C7
I put a CentOS 7 live CD into a PC several years old, and ran it without trouble for several days. Then I told it to install itself to the hard drive. That took kind of a while (perhaps because the machine is behind a KVM switch with three others?), but eventually told me it had finished. I rebooted. Given my druthers, I would now run Yumex, deleting as many as I could of all the things I

6.1 .iso size?
I haven't managed to get hold of any DVD-R media, and the machine I particularly want to install on seems not to be able to see double- sided (which I do have). (It's not exactly a new PC.) So I can't get 6.0 onto it in the usual way. But I can wait till 6.1 comes out; it is possible to predict yet whether it will squeeze in under the DVD+R limit? -- Beartooth Staffwright, Not

Routing all connections through a OpenVPN tunnel
Hi all, I have set up a working OpenVPN2 connection between my Server and my gateway at home. Now I want all traffic to be routed through this VPN connection. Currently everything is going through eth1 to the internet (to the gateway of the University which forwards it to the internet :-). We must use a prox-server and because of this I am not abel to watch the real-Media streams on

Can I copy my .wine??
I tried doing scp between two machines on my LAN. It whizzed along at great speed for a long time, mostly displaying messages over and over saying either something about permission (denied, I presume), or else about too many levels of symlinks. What I use it for is GPS/map software -- legacy proprietary stuff from Garmin and Maptech, to which I have added a lot of personal data collected

6.4 : How to enable epel and the rpmfusions??
I've installed 6.4 on an old T30 ThinkPad, and I'm in the midst of setting it up. I can't seem to get an rpm of Pan for it, nor even to do yum update. Mousing around fedoraproject eventually got me to http:// rpmfusion.org/Configuration/ and from there to downloads for the free, nonfree, and epel packages (along with a caveat that tells you -- *after* you've gotten rpmfusion
