How can I install Wine on a computer without internet access
Hi, Couldn't find the answer searching the forum. I would like install Wine on a system that has Ubuntu 9.10 but NO access to the Internet. I have another system with Ubuntu 8.04 which can access Internet, but the instructions at http://www.winehq.org/download/deb seem to imply that it would install the Wine on my 8.04 machine. Is there any binary I could download that I could put on a

Lucid LTS: different Wine versions for 32 or 64 bits ?
Hello, I 've been using Wine 1.2 wjth Ubuntu 10.04-LTS an a 64bit Asus laptop for almost one year. In the beginning, everything worked OK (graphic refresh, focus, etc...). Now Wine works bad, I suppose some updates in Lucid do not suit Wine 1.2 (?). I tried XP mode, W98 mode (my applications are oldies ;-), but the behaviour seems bad in any case. On this laptop, synaptic shows Wine 1.2

How to revert to wine 1.5.4 on Ubuntu 12.04 using Synaptic?
I am using: http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu as an additional repository in Synaptic so I can use the latest (released) version of wine, 1.5. Today, with the wine 1.5.5 update, I can no longer run World of Warcraft, so I'd like to revert to the 1.5.4 version until the latest released version works. Unfortunately, I can't force Synaptic to use 1.5.4 (perhaps because the

Updating Wine
I have just noticed that my version of wine is 1.3.28 which is apparently a bit outdated. Strange cos I installed it via Synaptic. Anyway how do I get hold of the latest version? Must I uninstall the old one first? Can I update from one to the other? Do I have to reinstall all my programs? Thanks

I simply cannot install R on Ubuntu. I don't know why.
I don't mind using sudo apt-get update/upgrade/install buit I get into crazy loops (hours) that clearly can't be trusted. But when I use Synaptic (reload/mark for install R-base) every time I get some list of things things it want to install as well and syas "Mark" which it does not do and when I go forward with the Synaptic install of R-base I get this (and abort) every time:

Still hitting odd problems trying to install R 3.5.2 on Debian amd64 machine
My Emails a week or so back were about installing Rstudio and the R shiny server on Debian. I was using an old Toshiba laptop as a sandbox for that and it would only install i386 (same for Ubuntu). Using the information at https://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/debian/ I did get to the point where I had R 3.5.2, Rstudio and the server on there (with some help from Dirk that is in the list archives).

Install latest R version from apt on Lenny
well, I had the site and page and I had added the relevant backport but it didn't work and i keep installing R 2.7 . Don't know why; i probably missed something. #### May be you should add in your mail the file : /etc/apt/sources.list (I suppose there might be a typo, as IT addresses are long and booring, and AFAIK, correcting a typo one made is **very** difficult). FYI binary installs

ubuntu 12.04 install issues
Hello: I have a new install of Ubuntu 12.04. I have tried to install R via source, apt-get, and the deb packages from a cran mirror. Each of these had issues. I followed the secure apt key install. The apt-get and deb installs each have the same error. So, let's ignore the source install for now. This is the error: >> sudo dpkg -i r-base-core_2.15.1-1precise2_i386.deb (Reading

Wine crashes on WoW install
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with WINE 1.2. I had to replace my hard drive, so this is a fresh install of both Ubuntu and WINE. I can accept the user agreements and open the installer, but when I get to the world.MPQ (i think thats the file) file, WINE crashes and tells me there was something wrong and the install hangs at 24%. I'm fairly new to Ubuntu AND WINE so I don't know where to

Installing R on Ubuntu8.04; episode 3184
Thanks to everyone who has responded (esp. Michael, I greatly appreciate but also recognize that getting R on my machine is not your career). Your last response was (basically) uninstall, reboot, retry Synaptic, if no good try: judson at judson:~$ sudo wget http://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubuntu/hardy/r-base-core_2.9.0-2hardy0_i386.deb I GOT --15:03:02--

cran ubuntu repository and ubuntu 12.10
Since upgrading to quantal, I find that synaptic and apt-get cannot read the sources.list file if it includes the previously standard line deb http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/R/CRAN/bin/linux/ubuntu/ quantal This line makes apt-get or synaptic give an error message identifying this line as having a syntax error. If "multiverse" is added at the end of the line, the line is parsed, but then

when installing packages for R on Linux, is it better to use my distro's package manager, or install.packages()?
I'm running R (currently 4.4.1) on Linux Mint > sessionInfo() R version 4.4.1 (2024-06-14) Platform: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu Running under: Linux Mint 20.3 ...truncated... To install a new R package, is it better to use Linux Mint's pacakge manager (e.g. synaptic, apt-get, or similar), or to install it within R with install.packages("some_new_package")? I've done both over

Installing and maintaining R on Ubuntu 9.04 -, best practice
I had an exchange of ideas on this with Dirk E. a couple of months ago. He can correct this if I state it wrongly, but 1) we agreed that using apt/Synaptic structure was best, but sometimes the packages are not available 2) also that using install.packages when there is a .deb can lead to some "confusion" (the package database on the local system does not know about an R package

I am brand new to Ubunutu and Wine so I really need help, I have no clue what I'm doing. But I followed the guide Here ("http://www.winehq.org/download/deb") and I got to where it said to click there and when I did, it prompt if I wanted to install Wine, and I said yes, and then I got an error window that said: > Cannot install 'wine' (E: Unable to correct problem, you
