perform t.test by rows and columns in data frame
Dear R Help,
I have been struggling with this problem without making much headway. I am attempting to avoid using a loop, and would appreciate any suggestions you may have. I am not well versed in R and apologize in advance if I have missed something obvious.
I have a data set with multiple sites along a river where metal concentrations were measured. Three sites are located upstream of a mine

In factor analysis in the psych package, how can I work out which factors the columns in $scores relate to? How do I know what each of the scores is scoring?
Hi
I have used fa() to perform a factor analysis of a psychological battery which is thought to have 11 factors. I can identify which factors the loadings relate to easily enough because I can see which items are loading onto each of the columns in the $loading output. However, how can I identify which items or loadings are being used to create each of the columns in the $scores output? I have

Using the legend function inside a bar chart error.bars function
Hello,
I am just starting out using R on my Uni course. I have been given a function to work with that adds error bars to a bar chart. I want to add a legend and have been trying to amend the code in the function error.bars (see below) so it automatically places a legend on the chart. It does this, but the legend is sitting over the top of one of my data columns. I need the function to decide

Waiting for CentOS to thaw....
Hello list,
I've put CentOS 6.3 x86_64 on my desktop, replacing Fedora 17 x86_64.
This is the first time I'm using CentOS on a desktop, so far only on the
servers.
The problem is with thawing from hibernation. Time from turning on the
hibernated machine to reaching the login prompt is not that of an issue,
although sometimes it can take a while (significantly more than with
Fedora).

Lag when playing freeware games
I switched to Linux recently and one of the biggest things I miss from Windows are freeware games such as Spelunky or Desktop Dungeons. So, I got Wine and downloaded those games, thinking they should run great and I'll be happy in Linux-Land.
The problem is they lag an ungodly amount, making them unplayable. Spelunky is a lot worse than Desktop Dungeons, which I guess I could suffer through,

[LLVMdev] missed optimizations
Hi,
I have two questions about optimizations performed by llvm.
Consider these simple functions:
int x(int b) { return b?4:6; }
int y() { return x(0); }
int x2() { return 5; }
int y2() { return x2(); }
the optimized bitcode (with clang + opt -std-compiler-opts) is:
define i32 @y(...) nounwind {
entry:
ret i32 6
}
define i32 @y2(...) nounwind {
entry:
%call = call i32 (...)* @x2( ) ;

Kubuntu 10.10 hangs up, while using DVDFab with wine 1.2/1.3
Hello,
first of all, let me say sorry, for my ugly english !
In the past, I used DVDFab 7/8 with wine 1.2 on Kubuntu 10.04. Everything worked fine, without any special configuration. I used the Blu-Ray to Blu-Ray Function.
Now, i did a new installation of Kubuntu 10.10, and DVDFab looks like this:
DVDFAB 7.0.9.3

long character string problem
Hi All
I am having 2 very long character strings (550chars) and I want to put them as
expressions together with c(). The problem is that I also get these
double-quotes, as seen below in 'fct'. How can I remove these double-quotes? I
tried as.name() but it did not work (because of size?). These are creating
trouble with subsequent programs, which I tested with strings that for some

Bug in model.matrix.default for higher-order interaction encoding when specific model terms are missing
Hi,
I recently ran into an inconsistency in the way model.matrix.default
handles factor encoding for higher level interactions with categorical
variables when the full hierarchy of effects is not present. Depending on
which lower level interactions are specified, the factor encoding changes
for a higher level interaction. Consider the following minimal reproducible

proto: make a parameter persist
The code below works as expected but:
Using the proto package, is this the best way to 1) make a parameter
persist if the parameter is passed
in with a value, 2) allow for calling the bias() function without a
parameter assignment, 3) have
the x2 value initialize as 5? Thanks for your feedback. Giving the
proto package a test beat and
establishing some templates for myself.

Simplify simple code
Dear expeRts,
I would simplify following code.
---------------------------------------------
youtput <- function(x1, x2){
n <- length(x1)
y <- vector(mode="numeric", length=n)
for(i in 1:n){
if(x1[i] >=5 & x1[i] <= 10 & x2[i] >=5 & x2[i] <=10)
y[i] <- 0.631 * x1[i]^0.55 * x2[i]^0.65
if(x1[i] >=10 & x1[i] <= 15 &
