This is an operating system question, but it is with the intent of using R on that operating system. I have an ibook G4 Power PC that I am going to install linux on. Is there a better, worse, or perhaps easier (I am a linux newby migrating from mac) distribution that I should look at. I appreciate your help. I didn't post this in the sig-mac because I don't know if it fits there better

Help needed getting rsync to copy from windows to mac
I'm trying to use rsync to copy files from a Microsoft Windows machine (XP, with cygwin) to a macintosh (10.5.8, PPC). After a lot of playing with options, manual page reading, etc, I have the following command, executed on the windows machine: rsync -A -X -a --delete --rsync-path="/opt/local/bin/rsync --fake-super --log-file=/tmp/rlog.txt" /cygdrive/c/DRIVERS "rsync at

Very slow domU network performance
I set up a domU as a backup server, but it has very, very poor network performance with external computers. I ran some tests with iperf and found some very weird results. Using iperf, I get these approximate numbers (the left column is the iperf client and the right column is the iperf server): domU --> domU 1.77 Gbits/sec (using 127.0.0.1) domU --> domU 1.85 Gbits/sec (using domU

image 256 x 920 data points too slow
Dear R gurus, I'm trying to visualize a matrix 256 x 920 using image(), but i find the display too slow (~ 1 minute ?? admittedly, my iBook G4 isn't very fast). The aim is not to get a good resolution image, but rather have a quick look at the matrix. I couldn't find a way to plot a smaller set of points from my data in a sensible manner (basically, i want to decrease the

Samba on MacOSX and printing
Hi all, an iBook running Mac OS X 10.2 recently joined my little network, so i did configure it for using a Windows shared printer (HP Officejet G55), naturally through SMB protocol. I used CUPS for setting it up. Now, the problem: if i try to print from the iBook, the printer takes about 10 minutes for throwing out each page and the document seems to be continuously spooled up to windows.

plot bg color in Mac OSX
Hi, I am running R on my iBook (OS X 10.4) and whenever I try and plot a model that has been run, I get a grey background. This makes the plot difficult to read on b&w printouts. I have tried changing the background to white (or any other color) without any success. Here's a current example plot(augPred(m2corn.nlme, level=0:1), bg="transparent", lty=c(1,4), pch=19,

Hello all, R just ''stopped working'' on my machine (ibook g4, os 10.3.9). between last time I used it and now, I did not do anything but check emails and browse the internet. when I try to start the GUI, it appears and disappears as rapidly. when I tried to run a session from the terminal, I got the following: mkdir: /tmp/Rtmp590-29493: Permission denied mkdir:

OS X slow with Samba server
I have an Apple iBook running OS X 10.2 connected to my network via an 802.11b wireless network. When I transfer files via SMB with my Windows 2000 computer, the speed seems reasonable. However, when I connect to a share on my Debian (x86) box (kernel 2.4.19) running Samba 2.2.3a-12 for Debian, the speed is only about a sixth as fast (transferring files to or from the Win2k box is about 6

Can't create files using Mac OSX Client against Samba server on Debian Linux
So I have my Debian Linux (latest stable release) box setup as a Samba server for my home LAN. What I'm trying to do is share a single directory (not a home directory) to any/all computers on the LAN. I have several Windwos client (a mix of Win9x, Win2000, and WinXP) as well as an iBook G3 running OSX 10.2.6. This share works great from all of the Windows clients. >From the iBook, I

ATA186 through NAT, over Dialup, success story
Hi, I'm away at a conference in Amsterdam. My home is in Cambridge in the UK. On a whim, I tossed an ATA186 and a phone into my bags before leaving home. I was able to plug my ATA186 into a LAN here at the conference and was connected to my home Asterisk in a few seconds. Total time from unzipping my bag to talking to home no more than 15 seconds. OK, so the kit could be more portable,

Can't create files using Mac OSX Client against Sambaserver on Debian Linux
Well, after some more poking around, I discovered that this problem was not neccessarily a simple matter of getting Samba properly configured. For the benefit of the list, I've posted the following URL which takes you to a Debian bug report which starts out with a post describing the exact problem I'm seeing. As it turns out, it may have more to do with a problem with file locking

[LLVMdev] compilation failure on OS X powerpc
The reason I didn't use Xcode 2.4 is because I'm running OS X 10.3.9 (Panther). I have not upgraded the OS to 10.4. Xcode 2.4 requires OS X 10.4, according to Apple's website. Do you know otherwise? I think the highest Xcode I can get is 1.5. By the way what does FSF mean? I also tried compiling llvm with the gcc 3.3 that comes with OS X 10.3, and it gave the exact same error

File locking from Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther)
Dear list, My system administrator at office runs a SMB server for us all to share files at smb://server/share/ , on which we share mainly MS Office/OpenOffice.org documents. I have recently switched to iBook G4 with Panther. After the switching, I can connect to the SMB server using Panther's built in SMB capability (under Finder). But then we discover that when I open a file on
