specs on private methods
How does a person test private methods? Is there a way to declare them as private, but retain any tests that were written during the initial development? Thanks. -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

should_redirect_to in advance - feels unnatural
I can understand that it''s easier for rspec to set up a mock in advance of the controller call. But it makes it difficult to do something like: context "The HarkController, given Louie the logged-in user" do setup do post :login, :username => ''louie'', :password => ''atest'' end specify "should redirect Louie to the home

Strategy pattern: comparing Context/Specify to Given/When/Then
Comments and suggestions for improving the specifications are welcome. Thanks, Alvin One example comparing context/specify (CS) with given/when/then (GWT) with a strategy pattern follows: Consider a pipeline transporting oil supplied by multiple partners. The amounts transported on behalf of each partner are recorded as transactions in a general ledger. There are multiple approaches to

should_redirect_to in rspec-0.8.0 / rspec_on_rails 1453
I have a spec: specify "a post with no user id should add a record" do post :edit_or_create, :user => {:login => ''joeschmoe'', :email => ''joe at shmoe.com'', :email_confirmation => ''joe at shmoe.com'', :full_name => ''Joe Schmoe''} assigns[:user].should_not_be_nil

BDDish rspecish question
Hey list, This is a kinda quirky question for this list, but I do think it belongs here. I''m currently writing an app with users with different roles. Roles are sequentially so to speak, so role 2 can do everything role 1 can, and so on. If I truly test my whole app, I should test all behaviour for each role, I guess. I could solve that by doing some clever shared steps and

slightly different view
All, One of the things I learned when I started to do TDD was that you should write enough tests to give you the courage to move forward. For some, that results in more tests than others. In approaching BDD, my initial thinking was to write examples for all of the possible behaviours in every context. I''ve had a change of thinking on this. Please check out my blog on it and let me know

YUI vs GWT vs ExtJS vs ????
I would like y''all''s opinions on ease of implementation into Rails, quality and quantity of widgets etc between Yahoo User Interface and Google Web toolkit and ExtJS. I am just getting ready to invest a huge amount of effort into one of them and I would like to know what the community''s experience has been with these toolsets. OR.. is there a better open source set of

REST API''s and querying a graph of objects
Hey all, I am wondering if anyone has given thought to using REST / XPath as querying mechanism. That way you could have a URL that actually maps to a collection of records (objects, really) that meet a certain criteria and that are sorted a certain way. Mike Pence

New User Issues
I just found RSpec and was trying to do the example on the main page for RSpec (the bowling example). I''m using Ubuntu and did the normal "sudo gem install rspec" and then tried to create the bowling_spec.rb file. When I ran spec bowling_spec.rb, I was missing the cucumber gem, installed that, reran and was missing the hoe gem, installed that, reran and it gave me the a missing

Rails Tagging Generator?
Hey all! Just finished my first Rails app on 1.0 day and even got paid for it! Great stuff and much thanks to the many generous souls in IRC, especially ezmobious, who helped me through. For my second Rails app, I want to use tagging. I am wondering if there is a Tagging Generator or some other existing implementation I can borrow from? Best, Mike Pence Boca Raton, FL

Ruby and Flash?
Hi there, I have an idea for a game I want to build, but it requires Flash as the presentation layer (I''d want to do the back end in Ruby running on Rails.) I have not been able to find any info on the integration of the two, and someone suggested asking here. Any info would be appreciated. Any links to examples would be great too. Thanks - please make sure you respond to me directly

Smb signing - how can I check?
Howdy, Does anyone know how to check the samba setting of "smb signing"? There is a data write error that can happen with the signing, and I'd like to check my samba servers. outside-in = integration tests on views?
Hi, In the spirit of "outside-in" are given-when-then scenarios supposed to be integration tests of views? Or should we be accessing the model interfaces directly (not through a view)? Referencing a plugin in a spec
I am writing some specs that use ActiveMerchant to talk to a cc provider. When I try to "include ActiveMerchant::Billing" in my spec, it tells me it can''t find the plugin: ./activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:123:in `const_missing'': uninitialized constant ActiveMerchant (NameError) Do I need to explicity require the main plugin file? Thanks, Mike Pence

Blank map?
Hey all, I''m a little frustrated here. The controls for the Google Map show up, but the map itself seems to either never appear or to briefly flicker onto screen, then to disappear. My controller is simply this: @map = GMap.new("map_div") @map.control_init(:large_map => true, :map_type => true) @map.center_zoom_init([0, 0], 6) and my view is this:

Relationships, relationships, relationships!
If I had my very own sweaty, wind-up Ballmer (http://www.ntk.net/ballmer/mirrors.html warning: mind-scarring video), that is what he would be saying: "Relationships, relationships, relationships!!" My unscientific polling of the traffic in #rubyonrails and here is that, second to deployment issues, this is the bigges FAQ for Rails: how to do relationship x in ActiveRecord. There seems
