Squeezing every last drop of performance out of DirectX
Hi Folks,
I have been using Wine for some time now to run Team Fortress 2 (and other HL2 based games) on my Ubuntu system. I was previously running Ubuntu 7.10 with an Athlon64 3800+, a 7600GT (256MB of RAM), and 2GB of DDR2 333MHz. Recently I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 (i386) with an AthlonX2 64 6000+, an 8800GT (1GB of RAM) and 4GB of DDR 800MHz. I was really hoping for a nice performance bump

Team Fortress 2 Issues
Hello there,
After downloading the latest version of wine, latest graphics drivers and install Steam through PlayOnLinux, I tried to launch Team Fortress 2.
The initial Valve sound played and then the menu soud, but there was absolutely no video/display. Checking the processes list, hl2.exe was still running, so obviously something is going wrong here.
My system should be fine, as I used to run

Slow performance with many 3D games
Lots of 3D games such as Team Fortress 2, Audiosurf or Stalker have very low performance in comparison to running on the same computer on Windows. What can I do to improve it? What developers have still to implement to fully support 3D rendering?

Can't install Team Fortress 2 - no disc no. 2
I have problems with installing Team Fortress 2 on wine 0.9.59 (the version from repositories). When Steam wants me to insert disc 2, I type "wine eject" in a console, insert the second disc, click ok, but then the same message appears - "Please insert disc 2". When I click it a couple of times, the window breaks - there's only a part of titlebar. Does anyone know a

Team Fortress 2 gaminfo.txt
Hello, I'm trying to run Team Fortress 2 on Linux using Wine 1.0.
I tried starting the game from Steam, but it shows the loading TF2 window, then closes and never starts the game.
I know the game isn't supposed to run on Linux, but I have a question about gameinfo.txt.
I tried starting hl2.exe in:
/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/steam/steamapps\*user*\team fortress 2
folder, but it said I

JUST A COUPLE OF NUBBY QUESTIONS BETWEEN ME AND FREEDOM
1. What does ~ mean? cd ie. "~/.wine/drive_c/"
2. Steam runs. Hurray. But I can't chat with friends. I can see their messages, but not mine. I assume they never get them because they never say anything more.
3. I launch TF2, I get the valve logo, source logo, then BAM back to desktop. No error boxes. And my screen resolution stays "minimized" to what tf2 was

How To Get Games on Steam?
I'm about to try out Team Fortress 2 because my friends wanted me to join in with them, and I'm using Wine to run Steam.
However, because I'm new to this Steam business and everything, I'm just curious -- how do I install a game using Steam as the AppDB says?
Or, how do I move TF2 files to this "steamapps" folder, and if that is the preferred method, how can I get the

[Wine 1.4rc5] Team Fortress 2 crashes after assets load
Hello, I'm using Wine 1.4rc5 (because earlier versions seemed to lag rather badly when rendering pages in Steam) on kernel 3.0.0-12.20 using the (latest) 64-bit NVIDIA driver version 295.20 (installed from the file from NVIDIA) for the Quadro 160M (which runs has run TF2 just fine in the past).
I understand that Team Fortress 2 and other Source games require 32-bit display driver libraries,

Forcing DirectX 8.1?
Hi. I'm running Debian Lenny, and I'm having a problem with Wine and playing TF2.
I used to be able to play TF2 under DirectX 8.1 before updating to the newest version, no problems. I didn't even have to use the option -dxlevel 81, it was already set to it when I looked under video settings in TF2.
However, with Wine 0.9.59, it seems that the DirectX that comes bundled with Wine is

Team Fortress 2 Won't Start
Hello gentlemen,
I try to start Team Fortress 2, which shows the Valve splash screen in a little box in the middle of my screen (supposed to be fullscreen), and then the screen goes black for a second and it crashes afterwards. I tried running it with '-dxlevel 81' both from the wine command in the terminal and in the game's properties in Steam, but it shows no difference.

Valve Source games display problem
I'm hoping someone can help me figure this problem out. It's been bugginng me for quite a while. First, basic specs:
8.04 Kubuntu
x86 64 bit system.
Nvidia 9600 GT video card
2GB RAM
Wine version 1.1.10
I've been running wine for several years, so it's distinctly possible that I've got some leftover configuration information that's messing me up. I've tried

Steam Games Don't Work. Please Help!
I bought a new computer for myself, and installed Kubuntu on it. I installed Steam on it, bought the orange box, tried to run TF2, and it didn't work. When I started it up, t showed the VALVE logo and played their little jingle, showed the Source logo, then the screen went blank and nothing happened :x . It opened it in the Konsole (Terminal) and it gave me this when the screen (on the desktop

TF2 random quit
Hello all. I'm having a spot of trouble with Team Fortress 2 under WINE. You see, the game appears to randomly stop working and blank out. Here are my system specs:
Motherboard: MSI 790GX-G65

CPU: AMD Phenom II
Video Card:PNY/Nvidia GTS250 Performance Edition
After the screen blacks out, I am returned to my desktop, with the resolution still at TF2's max. (Not as big as

applying a patch (select-dup.diff) to wine to fix TF2
I really feel like a n00b posting this, but I can't for the life of me find how to apply this patch. http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=21763&action=edit
One of the Steam updates broke TF2, and according to the comments in the bug tracker this should fix it. I just have idea what to do with the file. Also, my wine setup isn't like most peoples. I compile wine from source and

Team Fortress 2 losing priority/ how to fix?
Specs:
Ubuntu 10.10 64bit
Nvidia 260 GTX driver ver. 260.19.44
4 gig ram
onboard sound
wine ver. 1.3.16
So TF2 runs great, in dx9 mode its all good.
THAT IS until something pops up on my desktop in the form of a notification or if I needed to alt+tab to something.
I'm running it windowed at 1280x800 through the steam interface, the winecfg is not configured to run in a simulated desktop

Team Fortress and steam friends list
I haven't been able to find a way yet, but is it possible to somehow have steam run not in a virtual desktop or at least a seperate virtual desktop than team fortress 2? If I could alt tab or switch desktop spaces and be able to access steam from my taskbar so I can talk to my friends in the game (since in-game overlay doesn't work) Or join them using the steam friends options without
