response is null when using should_render_rjs
I''m trying to use rspec to test a controller that has ajax.
I have the following action:
def change_ad_type_form
render :update do |page|
page.replace_html ''ad_sub_form'', :partial => ''text''
end
end
and the following spec:
specify "should return Text subform on AJAX request to
change_ad_type_form" do

rspec_autotest no longer re-runs tests with rspec 0.7.5
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
What I mean is, rspec_autotest runs all specs, then waits. When you
change a spec, it reruns that spec. However, if that spec now passes,
it should run the whole suite again, so you can see the next one to
work on. It no longer does this. This renders it somewhat useless.
Does anyone have autotest working with rspec 0.7.5, or does anyone
have any

How to spec error_messages_for
Hi
I''m trying to spec a call to error_messages_for to avoid stubbing out
whole models. Something like this:
context "A rendered calculate_quote view" do
setup do
@form = mock("form")
assigns[:form] = @form
end
specify "should render the error messages" do
<SOMETHING>.should_receive(:error_messages_for).with

Model Specs: Fixtures vs Mocks + Stubs?
What is the general opinion about fixtures versus mocking and stubbing
in model specs? I heard from agile on IRC that they save the database
testing for integration testing, but I also see that the caboose
sample applicaiton uses fixtures. I also noticed that on the rspec
site, it says "Ironically (for the traditional TDD''er) these are the
only specs that we feel should actually

How to test views with Nested Resources and Partials
Hi everyone,
I am relatively new to rspec and I am running into a wall in testing my
views. I have a RESTful resource Contracts with a nested resource of
Line_items.
I am trying to figure out how to test the "edit" form of the Line_items.
What complicates this is the nested routing and how to account for it,
and that there is a partial form (_form.haml) that both the edit.haml

mysql cluster database.yml setup
im trying to deploy my app on our staging server and am running into an
issue.
we have a MySQL NDB cluster for the staging box. this basically means that
the staging box should be able to use MySQL via localhost and it will
automatically know it''s in a cluster. When running queries, it will go out
to the real DB boxes instead of localhost to fetch the data.
AFAIK, the clustering setup

plot() and points() precision control
Hi all,
I have a problem in that when I plot points that have a high degree of
precision, some significant rounding seems to occur, resulting in
uneccessary overlap of my points. Is there a way to specify the
resolution or precision in plotting functions? Is there an underlying
grid I have to modify somehow?
Many Thanks,
Jon

[ rspec-Patches-9605 ] Patch for ER 9472, shared behaviour
Hi all - I''ve applied (to trunk) Bob Cotton''s patch which supports
shared behaviours (link to tracker below).
I''m still toying w/ names, so please be aware that until this is
released w/ 0.9 it should be considered experimental and there will
NOT be translation support for it. It will definitely be included in
some form - just the names (specifically

extending rails via /lib - problems
I wanted to group some functions which I use in some models in one
place. Controllers have application.rb and views have helpers but I
couldn''t find anything about models. Using the /lib directory seemed to
be the only way.
Alright... so I have something like this:
/lib/code.rb
class ActiveRecord::Base
def method_a(n)
.......
end
def method_b(n)
........
end

problem getting started with stubbing in rails controller specs
Hello, Ingo!
I''m copying your question to a new e-mail instead of replying to try
to keep message threads separate.
Have you tried setting up your expectation before issuing the get
statement? For example, take this out of the setup block:
get ''index'', :locale => ''en''
and move it after:

heres how to get color output in rspec_autotest with rspec 0.7.5
In case anyone else is trying to make this work, here is what I did
(Before 0.7.4 I had patched the regex in zentest redgreen, but that
is not used any more)
To use directly, it is very simple. In rspec_autotest/lib/
rspec_autotest.rb, add a -c to the spec_command in the initializer
function:
@spec_command = "spec -c --diff unified"
This won''t help however if you want

error_messages_for when saving within another model
Hi,
I have this save routine:
def customer_address_create
customer_options
@customer = Customer.find(params[:id])
@customer.addresses.create(params[:address])
@saved = @customer.save
end
That passes to a rjs template like this:
if @saved
page.visual_effect :Fold, ''add_address''
page.replace_html ''addresses'', :partial =>

I am having trouble getting error_messages_for to work.

help with ''error_messages_for''
Greetings,
I''m in the throws of deploying an app on site5, and I''m getting strange
errors. I think I might need to understand how error_messages_for
works.
I get a pretty standard looking error:
"
You have a nil object when you didn''t expect it!
You might have expected an instance of ActiveRecord::Base.
The error occured while evaluating nil.errors

Why does error_messages_for take string as param?
Hi,
I wonder why error_messages_for take strings as params instead of
instance variables.
error_messages_for ''user''
instead of
error_messages_for @user
''user'' is translated into @user eventually.
If so, who not take the instance variables directly?
Is there any reason for that?
Thanks in advance.

Wrap error_messages_for() call when no instance var present
I am trying to put some smarts around a call to
<%= error_messages_for %>
so that when I first come into this page i.e. when my instance variable
@target_list has not been defined yet, the page doesn''t break.
I''m doing this:
<% if @target_list? %>
<%= error_messages_for ''target_list'' %>
<% end %>
I get a syntax error on line 1.
