My research indicates that it is possible to run Excel 97 with standard wine using a real FAT Windows partition. So far, drawing heavily on http://www.winecentric.com/ I've been unable to get it to work. I'm running the 20020904 version, and have mutilated my wine config nearly beyond repair in an attempt to get excel to run. I've tried running all native dlls, all builtin, etc, and

Problems for 13 year old
I would like to teach some scientific/statistical computing to my 13 year old nephew and was considering using R for this. He has a Mac G3 OS 9.1. I am looking for ideas for problems that would be interesting and motivating for someone that age. I recently taught him the basics of HTML and noticed that he particularly was intrigued by the ability to change colors; thus, perhaps problems

LAN games no longer working in Starcraft
My nephew was home last night and I couldn't play Starcraft with him because selecting UDP or IPX LAN games no longer works. When they're selected, a message box appears saying: Unable to initialize network provider I had the same issue in 0.9.11, 0.9.12, 0.9.13. I was able to play multiplayer LAN games previously, but I'm unable to say what version I was using at that time. I first

Latest on Abacus DPMI problem.
I contacted Mr. Heinonen, and got the response below. So, he says the problem is, it is 16 bit DPMI, which is rare, and the real problem is, DOSVM has a bug which allows two simultaneous interrupts. I assured him I was not asking anyone to work on the problem at all. I needed to get a handle on it, I had thought it was a locked selector problem. Learning what the real problem was, is a big

Quantian 0.6.9.2 with over 500 CRAN / BioC packages
I posted the following a little earlier on the quantian-announce list -- but it may be of interest here as well as this version contains all (but three, see below) packages from CRAN, and all of BioConductor. Quantian strives to provide the easiest way to set up a very complete scientific computing environment with a wide variety of tools -- including R, ESS, Ggobi, almost all of CRAN, all of

quick, quick, slow...
Hi, I'm (still) evaluating dovecot for a switch from UW in the near future. All the following happens on a Solaris server. Functionally, all is well. However, I see strange phenomena. Normally, dovecot is pretty swift. Every now and then, though, things slow down to a crawl. Everything seems to be working, still, but a few orders of magnitude slower. A copy of an outgoing message (of a

re: Samba PDC shared applications and a default start menu profile (Kevin S. Brackett)
Hi I'm currently doing exactly this for several sites. Within Win2K and above it is possible to configure Local Group Policy Objects, so that the ALLUSERPROFILES value is pointed to %LOGONSERVER%\Software\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu Thus when a user logs in, they see the the menus stored in their profile, overlayed by these on the Network Drives. no controlling tty
I finally figured out why I was getting this message: geoff at newzippy:~$ ssh dammit You have no controlling tty. Cannot read passphrase. As root I wouldn't get this, so I figured it to be some permission problem. Using strace I see: open("/dev/tty", O_RDWR) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied) write(2, "You have no controlling tty. Ca"..., 54) = 54 then

0.3.12.1 Quick Bug Fix Pre-Release
I''ve got the 0.3.12.1 pre-release up for people to check out. It has just a few minor changes: * You can now finally specify your own Configurator config and add any handlers or plugins you want. You basically just pass in the -S option and give it a .rb file to load. Mongrel will load this file after it''s done configuring the stuff it needs. This means you can use any of

A quick refactoring for handlers and CGI
Luis, The mongrel.rb file is starting to get a bit too big so I''m going to refactor it out a bit. I''m going to create a lib/mongrel/cgi.rb file for the CGI specific stuff and a lib/mongrel/handlers.rb file for the various handlers we''ll be making. Let me know if this causes you any pain. Zed A.
