xls to csv conversion via WinXP's context menu?
Frequently I need to convert a .xls to a .csv (for import into R) and I
do this by opening the file in excel and saving it as a csv. I would
rather do this using WinXP's context menu (right click the xls, choose
"convert to csv") but I don't know of a utility that does this. Any
ideas? Thanks, Mark

s3.0.0: problem getting usernames for a DOMAIN from win2000 and winXP's user configurator
Hi, we use a samba3.0.0b3 as PDC here. It's running smoothly, but one
problem persists. When I'm trying to add new users to a (local) windows
group "administrators" and select the DOMAIN instead of the computer
name, it waits a few second and then reports in gray: "No objects are
available in this location. Select another location."
this is in the logs:

Trouble (?) reformatting flash drive to include former U3 partition
Semi-OT?
I just got a new SanDisk 8GB flash drive, and, as usual, it came with
the U3 software (for Windoze) on a "CD" partition and considerably
less than 8GB on the disk partition. I put it into my WinXP portable
and told U3 to delete itself, but I still can't get at the old U3 part
of the drive. I've tried WinXP's format command, disk management and
CentOS's fdisk,

Reference to use of MLR in industry and biology
I apologize in advance for posting a question not related to R.
I need references to papers that use multiple linear regression in an industrial application and also in a biological experiment.
This is aimed to biologists/chemists (non-statisticans) so if anyone has written a brilliant paper where the use of multiple regression is important and also understandable to people with little

rsync-2.5.6 performance sucks between winXP and Solaris8
If I try to rsync OpenOffice-directory (OO as an example, 155 MBytes)
to Solaris8-machine/rsync-server it takes 4-5 minutes, about
70 MBytes gets transfered and eventually rsync.exe/winXP "dies"; actually
winXP's net doesn't responde anymore and I have to boot whole machine!
But when I try to do same between Linux and Solaris everything
works fine, transfer speed is about

3.0.10 to 3.0.20 transition problems ...
Dear all..
I moved my samba server to a new linux box (faster, bigger, etc..),
and I moved from Mandrake 10.1 to 10.3 (mdk 2006).. I just copy my old
configuration file to the new linux box. The new linux's distribution
comes with samba 3.0.20... ( In my WinXP's clients I didn't change
anything). Of course, it doesn't work.. My clients can't connect to the
new samba server...

CentOS 5.0 crash (cifs bug ?)
Hi
I think I hit the cifs bug described at
http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/WindowsShares
and
http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1776
As CentOS Wiki said, CentOS 5.0 do have a bug fixed cifs.ko, so I thought it
should be in CentOSPlus repository ... so I upgrade my kernel and using
2.6.18-8.1.10.el5.centos.plus. After I use this kernel release, I
check the cifs.ko
and see the following:

Teasing out logrank differences *between* groups using survdiff or something else?
R Folk:
Please forgive what I'm sure is a fairly na?ve question; I hope it's clear.
A colleague and I have been doing a really simple one-off survival analysis,
but this is an area with which we are not very familiar, we just happen to
have gathered some data that needs this type of analysis. We've done quite
a bit of reading, but answers escape us, even though the question below

checking for identical columns in a mxn matrix
Hi,
I have a rectangular matrix and I need to check whether any columns
are identical or not. Currently I'm looping over the columns and
checking each column with all the others with identical().
However, as experience has shown me, getting rid of loops is a good idea
:) Would anybody have any suggestions as to how I could do this job more
efficiently.
(It would be nice to know which

File growth behavior of Mac OS X and WinXP
Hello List,
I've searched the internet and I haven't been able to figure this out.
I hope someone here can point me in the right direction.
I have a MacOSX 10.3 machine and a WinXP machine that are being used to
produce large video clips (@1gig). After they are rendered and ready
for playback, they are copied to the playout machines using a system
that uses watch folders shared out over

WinXP and Samba PDC Auth Problem
I have been running a Samba PDC with Samba version 3.0.0
on Redhat 7.3 for quite some time. My WinXP Pro SP2 system is part
of the domain and everything has been working just peachy. And then,
of course, I had to tinker with it.
I upgraded the linux box to Whitebox Linux 3.0, a derivative
of Redhat Enterprise Linux 3.0. It comes with Samba 3.0.7. After
installing and updating everything, I

entropy and conditional entropy for continous variables
Hi,
this is not a R question per se, but since I'm on the lookout for an R
solution I thought this was the best place:
I would like to calculate the entropy for a variable and the conditional
entropy between two variables, H(X|Y) for variables X & Y
I have coded the case for the categorical case but I'm having problems
understanding how to do it for the continous case.

[ANNOUNCE] xf86-video-intel 2.20.16
Rejoice! We have found a trick to make 830gm/845g stable at long last.
Ever since the switch to GEM and dynamic video memory, those early
second generation chipsets have been plagued by instability. The lack of
flushing cachelines from the CPU to GMCH was eventually solved by using
an undocmented bit, but 830/845 were still hanging under memory pressure.
These deaths were all due to garbage
