anova subhypotheses
Hello all,
A really noddy question for you all: I''m trying without success to do some subhypothesis testing. Using simple anova model, with a toy dataset from a book. I have four factors A,B,C,D, and wish to test mu_C = mu_D. This is what I have tried:
> contrasts(infants$group,how.many=1) <- c(0,0,1,-1)
> contrasts(infants$group)

how to combine several subsets?
I simply put,
> NEVER=subset(infants$bwt,ISNO1)
> UNTILPREGNANT=subset(infants$bwt, ISNO2)
> ONCENOTNOW=subset(infants$bwt, ISNO3)
and I wanna combine those three.
I do it like
ISNO=NEVER&UNTILPREGNANT&ONCENOTNOW
and R tells me
1: In NEVER & UNTILPREGNANT :
longer object length is not a multiple of shorter object length
2: In NEVER & UNTILPREGNANT & ONCENOTNOW

Censored outcomes - repeated measures and mediators
Hello,
In a study exploring transgenerational transmission of anxiety
disorder we investigate whether infants react to experimentally
induced mood changes of their mothers. We measured the time that an
infant needed to cross a cliff (=crossing time) depending on whether
his mother had previously undergone a mood induction (treatment) or
not (control). The treatment is thus a

xml newbie
Dear r-helpers,
I am trying to extract quantities of interest from my iTunes library xml file. For example, i'd like to be able to run a simple regression of playcount on track number, under the theory that tracks near the beginning of albums get played more (either because they are "better" or because people listen to the beginnings of albums)
I have an xml file that is of the

Pausing script to allow user input from keyboard.
Hi all,
I have written a simple R script to help me analyze a large data set.
I would like to have the script pause to allow the user to input a
character string that is subsequently used as a filename when saving
tables. I have tried to use the "readline" command - this seems to
work fine when entering commands one by one, but when I copy and paste
the entire script into R,

Windows XP ups.conf question
Dear friends,
I am trying NUT standalone on XP.
My UPS is on serial port COM3
How can I include the serial port info in the ups.conf file.
If it was like in Linux, I would put port=/dev/ttyS2
However, "something" tells me that this is not correct.
Your input will be much appreciated.
Regards
Nick

Windows port of NUT: questions
Dear friends,
For some reason, which is not easy to explain here, I would like to use
NUT on Windows XP.
I fully understand that this is a BETA code, but I would like to receive
some help, if available.
So, after having tried many things, I have not got things going.
My question:
Is it OK to post my configuration files here, to eliminate obvious
mistakes and receive advise from other

Detection Times and Poisson Distribution
Dear All,
Apologies if my questions are too basic for this list.
I am given a set of data corresponding to list of detection times (real,
non-integer numbers in general) for some events, let us say nuclear
decays to fix the ideas.
It is a small dataset, corresponding to about 400 nuclear decay times.
I would like to test the hypothesis that these decay times are
Poissonian-distributed.

comparing and combing files
Hello,
I have two tab-delimited files which I would like to combine.
In the first one I have gene IDs (Unique) on column 1 and than various
experimental results from microarray analysis (see attached files list1 )
the second arrays have the same genes IDs (more and in a different order,
some are double) (see attached files list2 )
What I would like to do is to search in the second list for gene

Dear R team,
I am new to R. Please forgive me if I am using the incorrect format to
ask or this is not right place to ask.
I have a little problem with R-2.7.0 for Window. When I started the

softImpute_1.0 uploaded to CRAN
SoftImpute is a new package for matrix completion - i.e. for imputing missing values in matrices.
SoftImpute was written by myself and Rahul Mazumder.
softImpute uses uses squared-error loss with nuclear norm regularization - one can think of it as
the "lasso" for matrix approximation - to find a low-rank approximation to the observed entries in the matrix.
This low-rank approximation
