It takes hours to traverse all these directories with loads of small
files on the backup server. That is the limiting factor. Not
even copying: just checking the timestamp and size of the old copies.

data.table package
Hola a todos,
Quería saber si alguien tiene un buen tutorial para el paquete data.table.
Estoy levantando los micro datos del censo Uruguayo del 2011, con una
maquina no muy buena, solo lo he logrado utilizando dicho paquete. Ahora no
puedo hacer operaciones sencillas como contar los mayores de 18 años de
edad por departamento.
Bueno si alguien tiene un tutorial de dicho paquete o algún otro

Mounting smb
Hi, I noticed your message in the digest and I'm having the same
problem. I can get into my Win98 machine use smbclient, but I want to
mount the drive in /mnt. But when I go to do that, it whines about
client names and the like. Have you managed to do it? If so, can you let
me know how as I'm almost tearing my hair out here!

The goal was not to reduce storage, it was to reduce work. A full
rsync takes more than the whole night, and the destination server is
almost unusable for anything else when it

cut-off time for rsync ?
Hi,
I used to rsync a /home with thousands of home directories every
night, although only a hundred or so would be used on a typical day,
and many of them have not been used for ages. This became too large a
burden on the poor old destination server, so I switched to a script
that uses "find -ctime -7" on the source to select recently used homes
first, and then rsyncs only those. (A

data.table package
Hola,
Yo en vez de data.table, probaría con el paquete "*sqldf*" que tiene una
sintaxis en sus queries más sencilla que la de data.table. Y en términos de
volumen [1] y velocidad [2] de respuesta son bastante equivalentes.

cut-off time for rsync ?
What is taking time, scanning inodes on the destination, or recopying the entire
backup because of either source read speed, target write speed or a slow interconnect
between them?
Do you keep a full new backup every day, or are you just overwriting the target
directory?

smbd timed out kills WinNT application
Hi,
Probably this problem is known and has already been discussed
in this group, but I did not find any hints in the archive nor
in the package description.
On a PII/400/256MB RAM I am running SuSE 5.3 with smbd 2.0.2.
Unfortunately, sometimes the WinNT client seems to loose its
connection which crashes a WinNT application (SolidWorks) if
the latter wants to save a project. (This happened 8

__stderrp problem again with tk83
Hiho,
I just stumbled across the problem with the unresolved
__stderrp symbol. I've read the existing threads to that,
as well as UPDATING. However, there are some differences,
between the reported problems and my problem:
1. the unresolved symbol is not complained about in libm,
but in libtk83.so from the tk-8.3.5_1 port.
2. I _did_ install all the compatibility libs for
3.x, I even

cut-off time for rsync ?
If your goal is to reduce storage, and scanning inodes doesnt matter,
use --link-dest for targets. However, that'll keep a backup for every
time that you run it, by link-desting yesterday's copy.
Y end up with a backup tree dir per day, with files hardlinked against
all other backup dirs. My (and many others) here's solution is to

cut-off time for rsync ?
You could use find to build a filter to use with rsync, then update the
filter every few days if it takes too long to create.
I have used a script to build a filter on the source server to exclude
anything over 5 days old, invoked when the sync starts, but it only
parses around 2000 files per run.

Cannot install/run very important application
Hello everybody!
I've got a big problem: In my small business I use a Home-banking
software which I got
from my bank. Using it for many years now, it became very very important
for me.
Needless to say, it's a Windows software. Up to now, it was a Win 3.1
software which ran inside the Windows-Box of my ancient OS/2-PC. (The
only reason
why I still have this PC runnig OS/2).
This summer I
