Recommendation On Ping And Alert Tool
A bit off topic, but I keep looking for an answer to this question and coming up with nothing... so I thought I would go to the gurus. :-) Can anyone recommend a good package for pinging other devices and sending an email/alert when they go down? I'm aware of all kinds of more complex things with GUIs and a zillion other bells and whistles we aren't looking for, but we just want a simple

NMS Opinions
A recent post that mentioned Zabbix inspired me to have a look at them again while I was waiting on something as it?s been a while since I looked at them. Currently, I was using Nagios but had to start using Munin to add some functionality I needed and don?t want to continue down this road of supporting umpteen different packages. Between Zabbix, Pandora and HyperIQ, what would anyone familiar

Migrating away from Nagios
I have to rebuild a new Nagios box and thought this might be a good time to migrate away. I use snmp mostly for everything but with the fork Nagios endured I wonder about putting any more effort into the project. I probably should look at OpenNMS again, but the other options I think might work are Icinga (Should be trivial to migrate) or Zenoss or maybe even Zabbix? Anyone have experience in

Somewhat OT:
Hi, I'm looking for a monitoring system that support snmp v3. I want to monitorize linux servers and network switches. Currently, I am trying to use zabbix, but sadly, it lack at present features that I need. For example, I want to get reporting screens with data and graphs from network switches, I'd like to configure one only port of a given switch and that is used as templates for the

network mapping software
Hi all, I'm looking for network mapping software that would walk the local subnet and using snmp/cdp/nmap & friends produce a picture of network connections for documentation purposes. I've seen some for wintendo, but haven't found any decent for linux and CentOS specifically. Something like cheops-ng.sf.net would fill my needs, but before I start a fight with 5+ years old code

dovecot fails to start at boot, but starts manually
dovecot-1.0-1.2.rc15.el5 on CentOS 5 I reboot the server and dovecot fails to start. But I can then issue "service dovecot start" and it starts up just fine. How to debug? I don't see anything in /var/log/messages nor /var/log/maillog. I did have to set SELinux to permissive (in /etc/selinux/config), as dovecot can't get at its SSL certs. I'm debugging that

Not Quite Minimal CentOS 6.2
Hi All, I a working on configuring a not-quite minimal installation of CentOS 6.2. I tried doing the "minimal" installation available with the installer, but it's a bit too minimal to be useful. So I'm cutting down from a less minimal starting place. I'm pretty familiar with 5.x, but what I'm finding in 6.2 is a lot of new stuff, and a lot of odd behavior. For example,

Monitoring Xen with Zabbix..
Is anyone using Zabbix to monitoring Xen at the dom0 level? Right now I have the Zabbix agent running in each domU but I would like to get per domU and aggregated statistics from the hyper visor perspective. I see a bunch of ''hard'' ways to collect these stats but first I want to make sure there isn''t some ''magic pill'' for Zabbix / Xen that I might of

Triggering script from cron or web client
I have a Bash script, currently run a couple times an hour from cron, that pulls data from an old Windows DB by rsync, converts it to SQL, and injects it into a MySQL DB for display in a LAMP-based app. (Make and Perl are also involved to minimize the number of tables touched and to clean up the SQL generated by Pxlib.) I'd like to add the ability to refresh the data immediately from the

Old Asterisk forums not working
Hello! https://forums.asterisk.org/ is doing it again - "Content Encoding Error. An error occurred during a connection to forums.asterisk.org. Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem". Which is odd, as the Qualys test seems to pass, only losing a point for supporting TLS 1.0. But I know it's not just me because Pingdom can't read the page, either.

Domain group not working in valid users
Using samba-3.0.0-15 on Fedora Core 1. I have a group "Electronics Testing" on my Win2k AD server and added this to a share in my smb.conf: valid users = @"electronics testing" A user in this group is unable to connect. A local user added to valid users is able to connect, so other share settings look ok. I see this in the log: [2004/01/09 13:38:00, 10]

SELinux question - to fix bug in Webmin
I found a bug in Webmin when using Webmin with SELinux in Permissive Mode. The author of Webmin, asked me, in their bug tracker on SourceForge: > Ok, thanks ... I see the problem. Webmin opens the log file > /var/webmin/miniserv.error and connects STDERR to it, then runs other > commands like iptables, which inherits the STDERR file descriptor. > This is generally a good thing, as any
