More on CentOS autotools bug
Below is a repost of the message I sent about the strange error message I was getting when trying to build my project on CentOS. I am a software developer and don't have time to compare distros. I am also not an autotools expert. The autotools files in my project were lmade by others. It builds on everything except CentOS. I also don't have the time to build a simple test case. That

Maybe OT: Mailman keeps breaking.
I have a CenOS vps on which I installed Mailman to handle mailing lists for my organization. I was first told about Mailman on this list. The problem is that Mailman keeps breaking. Right now, when I try to access the web interface I get an internal server error. Fixing it is running up fees from my consultant. Unless it can be made stable I will have to abandon it. Thanks, John -- John J.

Changing Host Name
Thanks to all of you who are answering my dumb questions about my new CentOS instgallation. I modified /etc/hosts, as the hostname man page seemed to suggest, and rebooted. The hostname is still localhost. I want to change it to jjb-centos. I also want to change the domain name to abilitiessoft.com Thanks, John -- John J. Installing rather than changing
After reading the replies to my message about changing from RHEL to CentOS I think it might be easier to install the latest version of CentOS from scratch. I can save my home directory and my e-mail setup. My access to the present system is by ssh. How can I download everything with ssh then start the install? Since I am blind, I may need sighted help during the actual install process. Is it

Installing Java 7 on a system with Java 6
My system is 5.6, with upgrades. I installed Java 6 from the Centos repository. It doesn't seem to have Java 7. I need the development package. How can I install Java 7 development safely? I imagine I will first have to uninstall Java 6. Thanks, John -- John J. Boyer; President, Chief Software Developer Abilitiessoft, Inc. http://www.abilitiessoft.com Madison, Wisconsin USA Developing

Bug in CentOS Autotools
You saw my previous message about a strange error. I've tried many times to get autotools working on CentOS. It's the only distro in which I have had problems. How do i bring this to the attention of those who make the decisions? Thanks, John -- John J. Trouble with Mailman
I have set up Mailman on a virtual private server from 1and1 running Centos, though I can't tell which version. The system has 2 GB of memory. Mailman is receiving posts, but it is not sending them out to everybody. It is also getting some out-of-memory errors. The server is also runing Plesk for Web hosting. Something on the server is leaking memory. When first booted it has nearly 1.5

Strange autotools error
I am using CentOS 5.6, autoconf 2.59 and automake 1.9.6. I run an autogen script which cleans all autotools files and then installs new ones. If the appliction has no dependencies running configure, make and make install works fine. However if it has dependencies I get the messages "Creating Makefile" and "Could not find input file Makefile". I've herd that I need

Can I get rid of i86 packages and libraries on an x86_64 virtual server?
The server is a vpn with only 20 GB of storage. I would like to free up disk space. Even if I must keep some i86 stuff, I think I can get rid of the dev packages for it. Thanks, John -- John J. Problem Making Tarballs
I have a CentOS virtual private server from 1and1.com If I checkout or pull something from a repository, it will contain an autogen.sh file Running this and then configure seems to work. However, when I run make I get a lot of error messages from libtool saying that such and such a command could not be found on some line or that there is a syntax error. Changing from RHEL to CentOS
I have a RHEL system and I'm thinking of changing to CentOW. How can this be done most easily. OT: Documentation for Mailman
I have Mailman installed on a VPS running Centos to handle mailing lists for my organization. However, I can't find the documentation. So far, one of our consultants has been handling it, but that costs money. At the moment the problem is that I configured a list with config_list, but the changes have not taken effect. Presumably the list must be restarted in some way, but I can't

Changing the size of the swap memory
When I first installed my CentOS system the machine had only 1 GB. the swap memory was set to 2 GB Now the machine has 4 GB but swap is still 2 GB. With that much memory maybe it doesn't matter, but it sure looks odd. Is there any way to change it? Thanks, John -- John J. Problem booting in CentOS 5.6
The last update for CentOS 5.6 included a new kernel. Now when I boot there is a message on the console saying "mounting cifs: Password". If someone presses enter it continues to boot. This is very inconvenient, since I access my machine by ssh. Is there some way to get it to boot without pausing? Thanks, John -- John J. Boyer; President, Chief Software Developer Abilitiessoft,

Setting up a Virtual Machine
I have CentOS 5.7. How would I go about setting up a virtual machine so as to run another Linux distro on top of it? Specifically Scientific Linux or Vinux, a special distro for blind users. I will be using the latter to test my BrailelBlaster software with gtk and the Orca screenreader. Will I have to assign memory to the VM permanently? Thanks, John -- John J. Boyer; President, Chief
