Growing HW RAID arrays, Online
We add disks to an LSI raid array periodically to increase the amount of available space for business needs. It is understood that this process starts with metal, and has many layers that must each adjust to make use of the additional space. Each of these layers also says that it can do that 'online' without interruption or rebooting. But making it happen is not that easy. When the HW

formatting large volume
I just got a new server with a Dell MD-1000 SAS unit and 6-750 gigabyte drives which are now initializing in RAID 10 which will give me just about 2 terabytes. I vaguely recall reading that fdisk wasn't suitable for partitioning and wonder if I shouldn't be using partd instead. I am also wondering if I should use lvm or just mkfs to create the filesystem. Anyone have suggestions before I

2TB limit, weird mounting issues on reboot
Greetings, I'm seeing some weird issues surrounding the 2 terabyte limit on my 3ware (9590SE, PCI Express model) raid controller. Currently, the raid array is 6 x 500GB disks for a total of around 2.3 terabytes formatted. Looking at the documentation on the 3ware site, the raid card can handle a single partition over 2TB, but it still looks like fdisk fails to create a primary partition over

An mdadm question
CentOS 7. I have a server with four drives. 1 is /, and the other three are in RAID5. I need to pull a drive, so I can test whether the server can read > 2TB drives. I've been googling, but don't want to screw the server up.... I think I'd like to 1. stop the RAID 2. pull a drive 3. put in a large drive, and run parted, and mkfs 4. pull the large drive 5. replace the

More than 2TB RAID...
Hi, I just received a new server (HP DL180G5) with 12x 1TB HDs and I bumped into fdisks 2TB limits... Since this is an entry level server, I can't use the classic HP bootable utilities to create smaller volumes et can only create a big RAID6. I found out that: using parted, labelling it gpt and creating the partitions would do the trick. But, what about grub? I read that it does not support

EXT3 performance on Large (multi-TeraByte) RAID
Has anyone experienced a significant degradation in ext3 performance when using it on a Multi-TeraByte RAID? As part of an experimental setup, I hooked up three 300GB drives and made an EXT3 RAID5 out of them, using the entire space one each drive, and started throwing a large number of files in the size-range 3KB to 50 KB. Then, I deleted the raid, and created a new one, but this time, I used

Large RAID volume issues
I have just finished creating an array on our new enclosure and our CentOS 5 server has recognized it. It shows as the full 6tb in the LSI configuration utility as well as when I ran fdisk: [root at HOST sbin]# fdisk /dev/sdb Note: sector size is 2048 (not 512) The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 182292. There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in

Setting up large (12.5 TB) filesystem howto?
Hi, I'm trying to set up an iscsi 12.5 TB storage for some data backup. Doing so, I had some difficulties to find the right tool, maybe it's also a question of the system settings... The server is a 32Bit CentOS 5.3 with the recent updates. Ths iscsi connection can be establised. fdisk and parted fail to create any information on the device or fail completely. using the lvm tools

Re: Disk partitions and LVM limits - SUMMARY
Thank you all for the help. I'm writing this summary message because of people requests. I haven't tried all of this. I just collected it and organized it. You've got a big storage. Now what? The short answer is: "Just connect it. It should work." I'll play safe by saying that the following applies to <10TB storage. Some people reported file systems of 80TB.

pvcreate limitations on big disks?
OK folks, I'm back at it again. Instead of taking my J4400 ( 24 x 1T disks) and making a big RAID60 out of it which Linux cannot make a filesystem on, I'm created 4 x RAID6 which each are 3.64T I then do : sfdisk /dev/sd{b,c,d,e} <<EOF ,,8e EOF to make a big LVM partition on each one. But then when I do : pvcreate /dev/sd{b,c,d,e}1 and then pvdisplay It shows each one as

installation and configuration documentation for XCP
i''ve installed XCP 1.5-beta. i''m a little confused as to what has happened. everything so far seems to work. however, i need more information on what was done to my hard disk during the installation and how was the file system set up. in particular, i was investigating how to create a new logical volume to place my ISO file to use as my ISO storage (SR). i notice (see below with

6TB SCSI RAID vs. Centos
I have an Infortrend RAID box I'd like to see as one big 6TB partition, but I only can get 2.2TB partitions to work. I was trying to do this with an Adaptec controller but apparently they are only (any of them) 48 bits wide. Does anybody have a working system for SCSI/Centos over 2.2TB? Format big drives (4TB) in the installer?
Hi all; I cross posted this to the fedora list since we use Fedora as a test bed from time to time, however given this is a production server we'll likely be running CentOS. we've just ordered a new server (http://www.spectrumservers.com/ssproducts/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=26&idproduct=787) Originally I tried to simply upgrade an older server with more drive space, I

large SCSI RAID, replacing server
I have a system running CentOS 6.3, with a SCSI attached RAID: http://www.raidweb.com/index.php/2012-10-24-12-40-09/janus-ii-scsi/2012-10-24-12-40-59.html For disaster recovery purposes, I want to build up a spare system which could take the place of the server hosting the RAID above. But here's what I see: # fdisk -l /dev/sdc WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on

test, and H/W
Hi, folks, This is a test post; to make it of interest, here's an issue you might want to be aware of, those with not brand new hardware. We've got a few Dell PE R415s. A 2TB b/u drive on one was getting full, so I went to replace it with a 3TB drive (a WD Red, not that it matters.) We got the system in '11. I built the drive - a GPT, 1 3TB partition, on an R320, from '12.
