secure boot.
I've been reading up some about the new "secure boot" that's coming out on new machines when MS releases Win 8. Has a workaround been developed yet for those of us who don't want to run windows? Typically, I mostly build my own desktops, and I install cent os right from the start, but sometimes I do buy a desktop, and naturally it comes with windows on it, so I have to do a

Installing Cent OS from a usb flash drive
I recently acquired a Fujitsu Lifebook 1610. Unfortunately, the machine was missing a lot of the stuff that would've come with it brand new, mainly the usb cdrom drive. Currently, I'm running Fedora on it, and I installed it using a usb flash drive with the help of a program called unetbootin(Probably not spelled right). to load the ISO onto the USB drive. I've successfully used

OT Problem seeing slave drives.
This isn't specifically about cent os, but I am running cent os on this machine. I've got a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop pc. I've tried on a number of occasions to put a second hard drive in the machine, but I can't get the machine to recognize the second drive in BIOS. I'm going to try and keep this short and sweet. I've tried all that I know to try. I've set the

OT: question on setting up an email server
Hi guys, I realize that this might be considered to be off topic, but the machine I want to use is running Cent OS. Ok, this is what I'm thinking about trying, and mainly just to see if I can do it. I've got a total of 3 linux machines here, and I was thinking about setting one of them up as an email server. Now, I'm not talking about setting the machine up so that all I

Question on failing hard drives
In my Cent OS machine, I have 3 hard drives, an 80, and two 200gig hard drives. One of the drives is obviously starting to fail, but I'm not sure which one. Is there a command line command in Linux that will check the drive integrity on all the hard drives and tell me which one is going bad? Thanks Jim

cpu type
I have a quick question. The board and CPU that I'm using in one of my machines was given to me. I didn't take the time to look up the info on the board or anything. I was busy, so I just put the board in a pc case, hooked everything up, and loaded the os on the machine. I didn't know it at the time, but there's a chance it may be a 64bit board and cpu. I don't

Here's the latest batch of words to get shipped out to Allison Smith. Please submit reasonably small changes to me by tomorrow 10:00 AM Eastern time, and I'll add them. As usual, donations to what will be a ~$110 USD expense would be appreciated, as I am paying for this round out of my pocket. Please send to paypal address "jtodd@loligo.com". I did not include all

HD Failures
I'm just curious if any one else has noticed this. I've bought hard drives from both Walmart and Best Buy. If I can wait, I order them from newegg.com. I'm beginning to think that the staff at both Walmart and Best Buy, somewhere along the supply line must dribble the drives like basket balls. The reason I say that is all the drives I have bought from those two places fail within a few

OT, but just a quick question.
I know this is off topic, so please accept my apologies. This is just out of curiosity, and a number of people I've talked to in the area I live in have said the same thing. About 2 weeks ago, my one remaining xp machine downloaded and installed an update from Microsoft. Ever since then, the machine has run slower than a dead person. I was just wondering if anyone here on the list who still

problem with firefox
Just out of curiosity, has anyone noticed a problem that has developed with firefox? This started on both of my machines after the newest updates. I'll be at a website, even the mozilla website, and when I click on a link to go to another part of the site or to download a file, Firefox will just simply close. It's random for the most part, but it happened quite often at the sourceforge.net

wireless question
I've had no luck with getting a wireless card to work. Before I go buy another card, I wanted to see if there is a way I could do this instead. I've got a second wireless router that I'm not using right now. So I would like to find out if there is a way I can make this work. I was thinking about connecting the second wireless router to my pc through the ethernet port, and let the

Active Directory to OpenLDAP+Kerberos on Linux

Now, I want to now do migrate MS Windows 2000/2003 based Active Directory to Linux+Samba+OpenLDAP+Kerberos. Somehow, the impression that I am getting having gone through many docs, including those from samba.org is that its not possible till probably version Samba 4 is out. My

RE: Difference in Encoding of files on Pocket PCvis-à-vis desktop
Hello Jean-Marc, I encoded a 143 kb file on both the desktop as well as the Pocket PC using the default settings/ Here are the results. Size : Desktop - 17.6 Kb, Pocket PC -17.1 kb (not much difference in size) Now when I try to decode the file encoded on the Pocket PC, I get a message "This doesn't look like a Speex file". However, when I decode the Pocket PC encoded file on

problems accessing samba server from Pocket PC with Windows Mobil e 2003
Hi all, when accessing a samba server version 2.2.8a from a Pocket PC with Windows Mobile 2003 you can give a password and tell the Pocket PC to remember it. But, if you switch off the device or remove the LAN-card the stored password is lost (or send in a different way as Pocket PC 2002). Maybe the procedure of sending the stored password has been changed, because Pocket PC 2002 works fine

Hi Andrey, May be that we don´t understand. I need to transform speex to pocket pc platform. The Windows API is different to Pocket Pc API. Some IDEs that help us to create code for pocket pc, for example, are Visual C++ 3.0 embedded or Visual Studio.Net. Christian will develop this work with Visual C embedded. If you can develop this work quickly or you can guide me step by step, i would be very
