Software RAID Level 1, smartd and changing dev numbers
We have about 50 CentOS servers with software RAID level 1 (mirroring).
Each week, we swap out one of the drives (the one in the second of four
hot-swap bays, only the first two of which contain drives) on each server
and take them offsite for safekeeping.
The problem is, the kernel seemingly randomly switches between /dev/sdb
and /dev/sdc for these devices. This makes the process slower by

Smartd Warning in logwatch report
I updated the machine that I use for a web/email server last night to 5.9, and I

When are Logwatch errors really errors
Hi All,
I don't know enough about when errors are *really* errors. So I google a lot to read and learn.
I have a few things in my Logwatch that I want to make sure I understand
1. smartd

Transferring system to new drive
Is there a document with instructions for this?
I've had smartd warnings that a hard disk in my server is sick,
so I am installing a new drive (in addition to the old).
I was thinking of copying the old root partition with
sudo cp -a -P /* /mnt/hd
(after mounting the prospective new root partition).
Then I'd have to modify the new /etc/fstab .
Is that a sensible approach?

How to format a USB drive?
I have a usb drive, /media/disk and I want to reformat it. There
are several questions that come up:
How can I determine the current format?
Do I use the mkfs command?
Many thanks...

smartd.conf get overridden
Yohoo!
I have some issues with the smartd in CentOS5/x64
I edited the /etc/smartd.conf for my needs and restarted the smartd with
"service smartd restart". But the start script is overriding my file. I
checked it and saw the following lines:
---------------/etc/init.d/smartd------------
case "$1" in
start | reload | restart)
GEN_CONF="*SMARTD*AUTOGENERATED*"

smartd on RAID controllers?
It seems I can't smarm monitor disks on RAID controllers? I tried on
several machines with two different controllers and on all I get this when
starting up smartd:

smartd and 3ware on centos5
Hi,
I've CentOS5 box with 3ware RAID controller in it. I can't get the
tw_cli command line tool to work, and smartd also barks on me. The
tw_cli simply doesn't see the controller, no errors logged anywhere.
When starting smartd, it is much more verbose. I'm getting a bunch of
messages like this:
Oct 9 22:15:15 toporko kernel: program smartd is using a deprecated
SCSI ioctl,

I decided, after the last discussion of smartd and S.M.A.R.T. disks,

selinux + kvm virtualization + smartd problem
Hello,
I'm using HP homeserver where host system run CentOS 6.3 with KVM
virtualization with SELinux enabled, guests too run the same OS (but
without SELinux, but this does not matter).
Host system installed on mirrors based on sda and sdb physical disks.
sd{c..f} disks attached to KVM guest (whole disks, not partitions;
needed to use zfs (zfsonlinux) benefit features). Problem is that

info about hdds in raid
How can I tell wich HDD to swap, when the "cat /proc/mdstat" says one HDD of the RAID1 array has died?
Does the HDD's has some serial numbers, that I can see in "reality", and I can get that number from e.g.: a commands output?
How could I know wich HDD to swap in e.g.: a RAID1 array?
thank you

smartd and 3ware 9xxx configs
I'm looking to do a bit more monitoring of my 3ware 9550 with smartd,
and wanted to see what others were doing with smart for monitoring
3ware hardware.
Do you have the smartd.conf configured to test, or simply monitor health status?
Are you monitoring the drive as centos sees it (/dev/sdX) or are you
using the 3ware /dev/twaX for monitoring?
Opinions and discussions are welcome :-P

CentOS 6.4 x86_64 VM Install freezes
I am trying to install a CentOS 6.4 x86_64 VM using a CentOS 5.9 x86_64
host, but its install has froze *twice*. What I am doing is to create a
10gig LVM volume, which I put a MS-DOS partition table on (using fdisk).
I then format the only partition to ext3, install grub and install the
pxeboot kernel and initrd.img and a simple grub.conf to load this.
I have the CentOS 6.4 x86_64 ISOs mounted

Running MacOSX as VM under CentOS 5.10?
Is it even remotely possible to run MacOSX (or Darwin) as VM under CentOS 5.10
/ xen? Or am I better off not even trying and just getting a MacMini or
MacBook to just jack into my LAN? I just need a 'build box' and possibly
something to do light testing (eg does the program run? Does the GUI come
up?). I don't really have the *physical* room for an iMac, unless the screen
is tiny.

smartd stalls the system on reboot
I have begun to notice that the smartd stalls my machine's boot process for
as much as 2-3 minutes while it is coming up. I have the BIOS SMART
function enabled, and I removed the bad SG400GB drive from the box
yesterday, but I think this goes back farther than that.
Why does it take so long? Is the BIOS SMART involved in this (and how)?
Also, sendmail and sm-client take 30s-2m to come up

Strange Kernel for Centos 5.5
One of my VPS stopped working. After the data centre replaced a disk
normal service resumed, then I notices this:
CentOS release 5.5 (Final)
Kernel 2.6.35.4 on an x86_64
I always thought Centos 5.x would always be on 2.6.18. Any thoughts?
