We have some small networks with connectivity to the Internet
through firewall routers.? The smallest has one Windows 7
system and three Linux systems including both CentOS 6 and
CentOS 7 machines.? The Windows 7 systems have full Adobe
packages that are updated regularly and are trouble free.
On the Linux systems, evince has been our go to product for
viewing and printing .pdf documents.? This

White lines on persp plots in pdf format
Hi,
I am using the persp function to plot 3D surfaces, but the plots have
"little white lines" when I print them to a pdf file (visible in
Acrobat, Foxit, Evince, Xpdf and Gimp). This does not happen when I
create png or tiff images. Here is some sample code:
pdf("test.pdf")
x <- seq(0,1,length=101)
f <- dnorm(x, 0, 0.25)
z <- c()
for(i in 1:100) z <-

pdflatex: fuzzy fonts in Evince, but not on paper output
Hi,
I've been using LaTeX for a few years on Mac OS X, and I'd like to use
it on CentOS now. I installed a complete environment using 'yum
groupinstall "Authoring and Publishing"' and then installing tetex-xdvi,
plus manually installing the 'memoir' class.
I can run 'latex document.tex' ok: the resulting .dvi looks nice in
xdvi. When running

Wrong symbol rendering in plots (Ubuntu)
Hi I am having problems with the rendering of scientific symbols (mu and
degree) in my plots. Whenever I use these symbols they are rendered
changed (mu is changed to the proportionality symbol and degree is
changed to something resembling a gamma) in the X-device. If I make a
pdf of the plot and open the file in Evince or Okular symbols are also
rendered wrong, however if I open the file

CentOS 6 + nux-dextop: GIMP vs. GIMP 2.8 ?
Hi,
I just setup a CentOS 6 desktop with the nux-dextop repository activated.
When installing GIMP (yum install gimp), I get a gimp package as well as
a gimp28 package. I understand this is the Nux-Dextop GIMP 2.8 package.
Unfortunately this doesn't work so well with my system. It's not
localized (menus appear in english, though the system is in French), the
main GTK theme (Murrina

evince not showing "greek" and "math" in *.pdf plots
This problem has bugged me for several years now,
and our own IT staff has tried a few things, but then never
cared enough to persist fixing it.
It *is* a bug in evince, the standard pdf viewer on Fedora and
IIUC also quite few other Linux distributions, and
*not* a bug in R; hence I am asking for help/hints here.
A very simple example:

GIMP 2.3.15 for EL5, no newer libs required
Folks,
I've build a tiny repo to provide GIMP 2.3.15 (and 2.3.14 as a possible fallback) for EL5.
GIMP 2.3.15 is the last version of GIMP that builds with no errors with the GTK+ version that ships with EL.
2.3.15 is "almost GIMP 2.4", as 2.3.19 was the last development release prior to 2.4.0. To the extent of my knowledge, Akkana Peck wrote the first edition of her book on GIMP

Hi Martin
Probably not the answer you're looking for but on the latest Fedora 39 (workstation edition) both locally, and on a freshly installed VM (with just R-core installed), all fonts render correctly for me in evince.

Extreme frustration with GIMP
I am not a graphics person. Also can't afford to hire one.
Trying to follow instructions at
https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tutorial-quickie-separate.html
I use the "intelligent scissors" just like they say, spend quite a bit
of effort doing so.
Then click the foreground select tool - just like they say - and
suddenly everything I did with the intelligent tool is undone.
WTF?

GIMP 2.4 on CentOS 5?
Hi,
I'm using CentOS 5 on all our desktops here (work & home), and I'm quite
happy with it. There's one detail I'd like to change. GIMP comes in
version 2.2. There have been some changes in version 2.4, and it's also
been around for quite some time. There are quite some functions in 2.4
that I'd like to use. As far as I understand, building GIMP 2.4 would
involve

Using GIMP on Centos-7, problem
Wondering if anyone here has ever tried installing this
https://github.com/bootchk/resynthesizer
as a gimp plugin in Centos-7, with gimp 2.8.16??
I find the installation instructions (for the binary tarball) are
minimal and whatever I do, it doesn't seem to appear in the gimp
menus, as it should.
I've used an older version (0.14) from years ago in older versions
of gimp, but how does

GIMP 2.4 packages for CentOS 5
Hi,
One of my rare regrets with CentOS 5 was that GIMP only came in version
2.2, but 2.4 offers many nifty new functions quite handy for everyday
work. For those of you who are interested, I built some GIMP 2.4
packages for CentOS 5.
Download and install (using rpm -Uvh) the following packages:

evince not showing "greek" and "math" in *.pdf plots
Hi Martin and Tim,
I also have this bug. Though I think not necessarily with all the same
fonts as Martin.
Using Martin's code:

Fedora 39, Evince 45.0
It's a bug with Evince. I think. I think it's substituting in a font
set that doesn't have all the required symbols. I think it should be
possible to install the required fonts, but I haven't
