Using variables in virtual resources
Hi.
I''ve defined a virtual user "kenneth", and depending on a variable in the
node definiton I''d like to add the users to different groups. Consider this
example:
###### Code start
node "server.example.com" {
$server_type = "typeA"
realize User[kenneth]
}
@user {"kenneth":
ensure => present,
uid => 1000,

Changing Host Name
Thanks to all of you who are answering my dumb questions about my new
CentOS instgallation.
I modified /etc/hosts, as the hostname man page seemed to suggest, and
rebooted. The hostname is still localhost. I want to change it to
jjb-centos. I also want to change the domain name to abilitiessoft.com
Thanks,
John

Dovecot GUI
Is there a web-interface to dovecot under CentOS-6?
I want to create a top-level folder
(ie at the same level as Inbox)
but this doesn't seem to be possible
from KMail running on a remote Fedora-6 laptop.
I was browsing through the dovecot wiki,
and I saw some pictures which seemed to be from a dovecot GUI,
but I could not find the name of this program.
Alternatively, can I simply create

good shell script examples?
I am looking for a beginner guide to shell scripting simple tasks on CentOS
(e.g. ssh'ing into a server / router / switch, checking for certain things,
then exiting and going to the next IP).
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look? (I'm relatively new to
bash)

Relation to DMTF's CIM
I was wondering how Puppet relates to the DMTF''s CIM. AFAICT there is
a clear connection between the two, but I see very little discussion
on the topic on the list.
Thanks,
Cameron.

EC2 bootstrap: chicken and egg problem with login as ec2-user and sudoers "requiretty"
Hi,
I was previously using an EC2 AMI where i was logging as root, and i
could bootstrap nodes.
I am now using Amazon AMIs ( http://aws.amazon.com/fr/amazon-linux-ami
) and they require login as ec2-user.
The problem is that if i run puppet node bootstrap --login ec2-user,
it will detect it and run my install script as with sudo, which is
fine, but sudo will not run it because it is configured by

Chicken-and-egg problem with domain SID
I'm trying to configure samba 3.0.3 from FC2 with an LDAP backend as a
domain controller. I'm using smbldap-tools from idealx.org. From what
I've read, I need to configure the domain SID in
/etc/smbldap-tools/smbldap.conf. But in order to generate the SID, I
need to be running samba on the domain controller already.
I'm trying to generate all of the config files on another

Fact chicken and egg problem
I am trying to expose a custom fact that requires a certain gem to be
installed. However, the facts are being loaded before the module is loaded
(and I see why this is the case sine the fact should be made available to
the module). So my question is, is there a way to avoid this chicken and
egg problem? I tried putting the module in a stage before main, but it
still looks like the facts

chicken/egg problem with custom types
Hi
while usings DavidS mysql module with its custom mysql types I hit some
kind of a chicken/egg problem:
While deploying mysql, I also like to define some mysql munin user, to
enable munin monitoring for mysql things. I choosed to use the
mysql_user type from DavidS and it works perfectly. However I start
using the custom types on a host where mysql have already been installed.
Now I should

Safely updating to 4.4 via yum (chicken)
Hi guys:
I saw the pelthora of threads where people had trouble moving to 4.4. So
I'm chicken now and I was trying to wait for the dust to settle, I suppose
it has and its been long enough I'm nervous about not upgrading. I need to
do a a production server that is located in a data center far away so even
more than normal I want a smooth upgrade.
Can someone tell the what the

Cronjob / .rb help clearing session table (new to cronjobs)
I just launched my first ROR app and i need to implement the session
database cleanup. I am new to cronjobs. I have used one once but it
was all copy/paste.
I was hoping someone knew of a good tutorial or resource to get started
here or might be able to give me a little help.
I have seen a lot of posts that reference setting a cron job to clear
old sessions but I am not clear on:

Cronjob script with date stamp?
I have a cron job that calls a shell script - the script invokes dump.
I'd like to do two things:
- Have the script dump the results of the job to a text file. I tried
this with /path/to/dump my switches -v >> /home/me/dump.log
But that just produced an empty file.
- Have the dump file be date-stamped with the date it was executed. Right
now, I manually edit the script to change

I will second this. It seems to just hang after a while even though both the
server and the client are configured with KeepAlive enabled.
It also looks to both sides like the connection is still open. The forwarded
ports are still in netstat output but

For what it's worth, we no longer have requiretty in the package in
Fedora, so eventually that change will probably make it down to CentOS.
Overall, security benefit vanishingly small and inconvenience
