SSH prompt: Need advise from Japan
Hi all, I hope there is someone in Japan. If we install Centos in Japanese, and then I ssh to it from an English client. Will the SSH prompt be in Japanese? How to make the SSH prompt in Japanese? Thank you. -- Fajar.

Good book on Linux Admin (Centos 5.5)
My Admin books are out of date, so I need a new one that contains info about the Linux as in Centos 5.5. I am a "Sunday user"; not one earning a living as an Admin. Recommendations welcomed.... Invalid SyntaxReference page in the wiki
Hi, Something which bothered me a few times in the past, the SyntaxReference link when you are editing a page points to: centoswiki/SyntaxReference That page did not exist, luckily it suggested the real location: SyntaxReference so it was not a real problem. But it may confuse other people in the future. So what I did for now was created the non-existing page and redirected it to

HP Network Printer Issue - Resend
I sent the following message back in June, but I must have missed the reply: I'm attempting to install and configure HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) software on my CentOS 5.3 x86_64 system without success. I've got a HP Officejet Pro 8500 multi-function printer connected via ethernet. I'm getting a message saying that it cannot locate the libcups module

Article for wiki consideration
I've recently documented simple use of a VServer with CentOS host and guest. toracat@ said that it might be worthwhile putting on the wiki. The present article is located at http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/vserver.html If it does get to the wiki, I would remove the fedora section and also add a notice at the beginning of the article with dire warnings about using a non-stock kernel.

Creating the symbolic links in the /boot and /boot/grub/
I started a new thread since the original one is getting rather long. I have retrieved the files I deleted in /boot and /boot/grub, however I need to make links for /boot/System.map (System.map -> System.map-2.6.9-89.35.1) /boot/vmlinuz (vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.6.9-89.35.1) /boot/grub/menu.lst (menu.lst -> ./grub.conf) If it was not so important to get it correct, I would appreciate

Does elrepo fix google-chrome requirement for newer glib and GTK
Has anyone tested installing the newer kernels from elrepo (or somewhere else) in order to keep google-chrome updated beyond version 27? Actually, i assumed a newer kernel would come with a newer glibc but i do not see a newer glibc via elrepo, just newer kernels. hmmm. # yum --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=elrepo* info glibc | grep -i repo only lists my already installed glibc packages from

Google Chrome Issues on CentOS 6
I've installed Google Chrome using the Richard Lloyd 'install-chrome.sh' script (http://chrome.richardlloyd.org.uk/), and am finding a couple of nagging issues. (Current install is google-chrome-stable-46.0.2490.71-1.x86_64). First, every time I shut down Chrome and start it back up, it whines about not having been shut down "properly." Second, and worse, at start up,

article for consideration, Atheros 5007EG wireless card
I have a page where I document getting the increasingly popular AR5007EG Atheros wireless card working. (This is the card used in the Asus EEE PC). The current article covers several distributions, but would be modified to just cover CentOS. It does, however, involve getting third party software, as the rpmforge repos don't have the necessary drivers. (Apparently, it's a bit of a

Setting up a GUI remote access
Currently I have VNC running on my Windows desktop with Samba providing access to my Linux server. Since Linux is more reliable than Windows, I would like to be able to access my Linux (Centos 5.5) via my Windows notebook - hopefully via VNC or some similar application and then access the Windows desktop (if it is not locked up :-) ) with Samba. What is the best VNC like application to

Google Chrome Issues on CentOS 6
On a centos-7 machine where I was having this issue, updating just chrome from: google-chrome-stable-45.0.2454.101-1.x86_64 to: google-chrome-stable-46.0.2490.71-1.x86_64 seemed to resolve this problem. I realize that the OP is reporting this issue, on C6, with the release I just updated to. By the way, I haven't run into this problem with the versions from their beta release channel.

Google chrome vs network settings proxy?
I started using chrome on the RHEL7 beta after some firefox hangs - but maybe this behavior is generic. I have the system 'network settings/network proxy' set to use squid on another host for connections out of the private range we use. This proxy requires authentication so I can always tell the first time a browser uses it. However, I can start a chrome connection to gmail and it

short vpnc article
Akemi-san has suggested that I turn the following post into a wiki article. (The article would be a bit better organized, since if one bothers to follow the thread, you'll see that I found that one can use the pcf2vpnc in Dag's rpm without worrying about having a plain text password.) http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=18444&forum=38&post_id=67625 If

Default permissions for creating a new user
I know this is a Linux 101 question, however I am unable to locate the answer in my O'Reilly Linux book: how to set the default for permissions when creating a new user. The default for the GUI in my newly installed Centos 5.5 is 700. I usually use 774. And when root creates a new directory, is there a way to have a default there too? Lastly, if root or someone with root privileges
