Race condition with mdadm at boot [still mystifying]
This is a bit long-winded, but I wanted to share some info .... Regarding my earlier message about a possible race condition with mdadm, I have been doing all sorts of poking around with the boot process. Thanks to a tip from Steven Yellin at Stanford, I found where to add a delay in the rc.sysinit script, which invokes mdadm to assemble the arrays. Unfortunately it didn't help, so it

Race condition with mdadm at bootup?
Hello folks, I am experiencing a weird problem at bootup with large RAID-6 arrays. After Googling around (a lot) I find that others are having the same issues with CentOS/RHEL/Ubuntu/whatever. In my case it's Scientific Linux-6 which should behave the same way as CentOS-6. I had the same problem with the RHEL-6 evaluation version. I'm posting this question to the SL mailing list

CentOS and Marvell SAS/SATA drivers
Hello all, I've been on a real roller coaster ride getting a large virtual host up and running. One troublesome thing I've discovered (the hard way) is that the drivers for Marvell SAS/SATA chips still have a few problems. After Googling around quite a bit, I see a significant number of others have had similar issues, especially evident in the Ubuntu forums but also for a few

ZFS on Caviar Blue (Hard Drive Recommendations)
Hi list, I googled around but couldn''t find anything on whether someone has good or bad experiences with the Caviar *Blue* drives? I saw in the archives Caviar Blacks are *not* recommended for ZFS arrays (excluding apparently RE3 and RE4?). Specifically I''m looking to buy Western Digital Caviar Blue WD10EALS 1TB drives [1]. Does anyone have any experience with these drives? If

Conditional Autoregressive Value at Risk (CAViaR)
Hi, I am trying to replicate Engle and Manganelli's paper Conditional Autoregressive Value at Risk (CAViaR) by Regression Quantiles. I have the Matlab code which I cannot get to work as I have never used Matlab before, does anyone know if there is the same code available to estimate the CAViaR models in R? Thanks, Shane -- View this message in context:

alternate compression
I'm doing testing on this at the moment. But to start with: >>Because music represents an analog signal, As I wrote, it would only apply to specific genres, not analog recordings. Electronic music quite often doesn't leave a computer these days. And it mainly consists of drums, synths & vocals/effects. Drums are often samples sequenced at sample (not sub-sample) accuracy,

NTP strangeness...
Hi Marco, As far i can see here. Are all your ADDC servers set to the same source NTP ( preffered a stratum 1 or 2 ) server. ( and not pool ntp sources ) Because below i see stratum 4 and stratum 3 servers and a timeout on one server. When i look at this. > C:\Users\gaio>w32tm /query /peers > N. peer: 1

Dovecot LDAP authentication not working
Hie all, I am new to both Dovecot and this list. I am trying to set up a Dovecot and Sendmail mail server with OpenLDAP user database for authentication. The sendmail setup is working fine, but authentication for Dovemail is not working. When I try to authenticate using POP3, I get an "authentication failed" error, and the logs show the following: Sep 19 16:53:21 tempo slapd[6316]:

NTP strangeness...
In our network we found some client with clock differences. Some machine have effectively some troubles, eg have NO 'Windows Time' service defined, probably some glitches happened when moving from our old NT-like domain. Anyway, catching for that, we have found some other strangeness. Windows time service run: C:\Users\gaio>sc query w32time NOME_SERVIZIO: w32time TIPO

One disk speed problem [SOLVED], and a question on hdparm
I believe I've posted before about one of the speed issues we were having, of backups taking many, many hours that should *not* take that long. My manager and I finally nailed it down to the h/d itself. Identical boxes, and he tried a backup of one system which took under two hours, while the same regular one rand nearly six. I'd been googling on and off for weeks, and this morning, ran

Running dtrace sript for defined period of time?
Hello, I''m building some simple monitoring tools to watch zfs storage servers. Is this possible to run dtrace script for example 10 seconds? (Of course it is, I just trying to figure out how). Right know it has to be stopped by "CTRL-C" I''m particulary interested in scripts like iscsiio.d, iscsiwho.d from
