CentOS and Marvell SAS/SATA drivers
Hello all,
I've been on a real roller coaster ride getting a large virtual host up
and running. One troublesome thing I've discovered (the hard way) is
that the drivers for Marvell SAS/SATA chips still have a few problems.
After Googling around quite a bit, I see a significant number of others
have had similar issues, especially evident in the Ubuntu forums but
also for a few

Software RAID1 with CentOS-6.2
Hello,
Having a problem with software RAID that is driving me crazy.
Here's the details:
1. CentOS 6.2 x86_64 install from the minimal iso (via pxeboot).
2. Reasonably good PC hardware (i.e. not budget, but not server grade either)
with a pair of 1TB Western Digital SATA3 Drives.
3. Drives are plugged into the SATA3 ports on the mainboard (both drives and
cables say they can do 6Gb/s).
4.

Race condition with mdadm at bootup?
Hello folks,
I am experiencing a weird problem at bootup with large RAID-6 arrays.
After Googling around (a lot) I find that others are having the same
issues with CentOS/RHEL/Ubuntu/whatever. In my case it's Scientific
Linux-6 which should behave the same way as CentOS-6. I had the same
problem with the RHEL-6 evaluation version. I'm posting this question
to the SL mailing list

SATA errors in log
Hi,
I have a SATA PCIe 6Gbps 4 port controller card made by Startech. The
kernel (Linux viz1 2.6.32-220.4.1.el6.x86_64) sees it as
Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE9123
I use it to provide extra SATA ports to a raid system.
The HD's are all "WD2003FYYS" and so run at 3Gbps on the 6Gbps controller.
However I am seeing lots of instances of errors like this

RHEL-6 vs. CentOS-5.5 (was: Static assignment of SCSI device names?)
Hello list members,
My adventure into udev rules has taken an interesting turn. I did
discover a stupid error in the way I was attempting to assign static
disk device names on CentOS-5.5, so that's out of the way.
But in the process of exploring, I installed a trial copy of RHEL-6 on
the new machine to see if anything had changed (since I intend this box
to run CentOS-6 anyway).
Lots

ZFS on Caviar Blue (Hard Drive Recommendations)
Hi list,
I googled around but couldn''t find anything on whether someone has
good or bad experiences with the Caviar *Blue* drives? I saw in the
archives Caviar Blacks are *not* recommended for ZFS arrays (excluding
apparently RE3 and RE4?). Specifically I''m looking to buy Western
Digital Caviar Blue WD10EALS 1TB drives [1]. Does anyone have any
experience with these drives?

Setting up RAID using mdadm on a proliant DL320 G4
Hi, I have a new server HP proliant DL320 G4, with two 160 GB SATA hdds.. I have installed CentOS 4.5 with mdadm without any problem, but when I disconnect one disk the server does not boot or I received a kernel panic when booting... I have disabled the SATA embeded raid (BIOS) and nothing.. I've also download the driver from HP site HP (Embedded SATA RAID Controller Driver Diskette for Red

sata_nv, CentOS 4 update 2 and hang during post-install
Good day. Thanks in advance for any help.
I have a Tyan S2895 (Thunder K8WE) with 2 275 Opterons and the latest
(1.02) bios. It appears to have an nVidia nForce SATA chipset which
connects to a 250gb WD Caviar SATA drive.
Using the CentOS 4 update 2 x86_64 DVD, the install is peachy until
half-way through the "performing post install configuration" bit.
Then it hangs forever.

Static assignment of SCSI device names?
Hello list members,
In CentOS-5.5 I'm trying to achieve static assignment of SCSI device
names for a bunch of RAID-60 drives on a Supermicro motherboard. The
"scsi_id" command identifies all drives ok.
The board has one SATA controller and three SAS/SATA controllers ...
standard on-board ICH-10 ATA channels, an on-board LSI SAS/SATA
controller, and two add-on SAS/SATA

Need a CONFIRMED working hardware sata raid10 card
Does anyone know of a card that actually works with CentOS 4
that supports Raid10? I don't think CentOS support software raid 10 from
the installer.
Thanks,

ZFS Appliance as a general-purpose server question
A customer is looking to replace or augment their Sun Thumper
with a ZFS appliance like 7320. However, the Thumper was used
not only as a protocol storage server (home dirs, files, backups
over NFS/CIFS/Rsync), but also as a general-purpose server with
unpredictably-big-data programs running directly on it (such as
corporate databases, Alfresco for intellectual document storage,
etc.) in order to

WD caviar/mpt issues
I know that this has been well-discussed already, but it''s been a few months - WD caviars with mpt/mpt_sas generating lots of retryable read errors, spitting out lots of beloved " Log info 31080000 received for target" messages, and just generally not working right.

Mystifying SEGFAULT on 3.2.3 but not 3.2.2
Dear R developers,
(Apologies about previous incomplete e-mail, I fat-fingered a keyboard
shortcut)??
I recently upgraded to 3.2.3 and am getting mystifying errors with my

One disk speed problem [SOLVED], and a question on hdparm
I believe I've posted before about one of the speed issues we were having,
of backups taking many, many hours that should *not* take that long.
My manager and I finally nailed it down to the h/d itself. Identical
boxes, and he tried a backup of one system which took under two hours,
while the same regular one rand nearly six.
I'd been googling on and off for weeks, and this morning, ran

ANOVA in Randomized-complete blocks design

I am trying to repeat an example from Sokal and Rohlfs "Biometry" --

The data is fairly simple:

Hard disk recomendation for a software raid 5 array. Does Linux Software Raid support/interacts well with TLER enabled disks.
Hi people,
I am building a cheap remote rsync backup server using a software raid
