Security: gnome-screensaver VS. switch user
People "usually" suspend their laptop, so that they can continue their work when they open the laptop. OK!
Two choices [GNOME]:
1 - Menu -> Shut Down -> Suspend
in this case, the gnome-screensaver locks the PC. but the gnome-screensaver is just a "normal process", and it could be killed e.g.:

putting "/tmp" to memory
"to memory" means: mounting a ~2 GByte filesystem [ tmpfs?, or ramfs? ], and put the "/tmp" on it. [ e.g.: 4 GByte ram in the pc ]. what to write in the "/etc/fstab"?
I would like to collect the [ answers too:P ]:
Advantages:
- Memory is way faster then HDD/SSD, so it could speed things up
- "SSD amortization" is less
Disadvantages:
- Security?

OpenSSH could be faster...then why don't they path it??
https://www.psc.edu/networking/projects/hpn-ssh/hpn-v-ssh-tput.jpg
"SCP and the underlying SSH2 protocol implementation in OpenSSH is network performance limited by statically defined internal flow control buffers. These buffers often end up acting as a bottleneck for network throughput of SCP, especially on long and high bandwith network links. Modifying the ssh code to allow the buffers

Autorun Picks Up Options
Hi,
I was trying to use the autorun feature of rspec but noticed that when I
run the command to kick off the ruby scripts it picks up the options that I
give to the command.
''myRubyBin -j optionValue''
This then fails with this error,
/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1448:in `complete''
:
invalid option: -j
(
OptionParser::InvalidOption

Replacing the Random Number Generator in Stand Alone Library
Hi R-Developers,
I had a question about the random number generator used in the R StandAlone
Math Library. The stand-alone library depends on the unif_rand() function
for most simulated values, and this function is provided in the sunif.c file
in the relevant directory. At present, this program implements the
"Marsaglia-Multicarry" algorithm, which is described throughout the R

if the file changes send email about diff
I have 2 script. Script "A", Script "B".
Script "A" is regulary watching the "dhcpacks" [dhcp release is configured to 2mins] in the logs, for the past 2 minutes. it writes the MAC addresses to a file [/dev/shm/dhcpacks-in-last-2min.txt] every 2 minutes. Ok, this is working, active clients are in this file. Super!

RSpactor 0.0.2 : autorun your spec files
Hi all. I want to introduce RSpactor and its "draft" release 0.2.0.
RSpactor is a little command line tool to automatically run your
changed specs (much like autotest). As you may expect, it concentrates
on the use of RSpec. It was especially designed to use filesystem
events like FSEvent on Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) instead of permanently
polling a directory structure. RSpactor is

Autorun ability on cd?
I have a little niggling situation that I would like to resolve
programmatically. I use Git as my SCM and I have release branches
which are sometimes patched. I find myself sometimes entering the
working directory tree forgetting that I was last on a release
branch and not on the master.
What I would like to do is to have a script run every time that I
enter a directory, check for .git, and if

Error message
I just installed Wine into Ubuntu 10.4, from Ubuntu's Software Center (the installation instructions at WineHQ didn't work). I've tried installing a couple of Windows programs from CD (a set of clip art images from Nova Development Corp, and Willmaker Plus from Intuit). Every executable I've tried generates the following standard error message:

booting from copied ext3 software raid fs to normal fs
Hello.
I am trying to boot CentOS 4 from a copy of an ext3 software RAID 1
filesystem (md) which has been copied to a normal ext3 filesystem (hd). I am
almost getting there, exept that the system hangs after booting the kernel.
I copied the datas from the /boot and / partitions to two similar partitions
on the backuped disk with mirrordir (can also be done with cp or dd). I have
setup the new
