what the H is this virbr0?
Hi,
I just tested in the lab the new CentOS 5.1 Xen and find out it breaks
network connectivity, at least in my setup.
It seems it is somehow making use of the 3.1 Xen version (altought I am
not sure about that) but whatever changes it introduce is not documented
at the location one would expect, the obvious new thing (at least for
me) is this thing I will call out of guessing a virtual

VoIP operators or hobbyists which wants to build their own small and low cost
VoIP phone.
Speex seems to be great choice. And greater will be if there should be some
guys who want to help ;-).
Altought I am experienced in C/ASM

Troubles with Network Neighbourhood
Hi ,
I've some torubles with smb server provided with Debian 3.0 Woody - I
can't see any machine in network neighbourhood, altought all machines
are loging and mapping resources shared by server correctly. What
exactly is needed to be installed with smb - any DNS or something like
this? Maybe the question is not too clever, but when I've had my server
on RH7.2 there was no such

Different behaviour of data()
Dear List,
I frequently use the
data()
function to load csv files (with separator ";") into R session,
typically
data(myfile)
loads myfile.csv from my working/data directory into R.
Now, in 1.4.0 version, everything works as expected, but with one
difference:
The values readed in older versions in "num" mode are now readed as "int"
mode,
converting the values

(no subject)
Hi, I have shorewall 2.0.8 installed on a linux box. Recently I moved
to a setup with a front/back firewall
With shorewall acting as a front firewall and M$ ISA Server 2004 acting
as a back firewall. I turned all ''intrusion alerts''
On at the ISA server expecting not to get any since shorewall should
block everything.
Now to the problem:
I am getting quite a few alerts

alerting through puppet
Hi all,
I currently use puppet and cacti, and am in need of an alerting system for
systems/services that are down. Alerts through cacti are a major pain, so I
have begun looking at a small and simple tool called monit. Monit, however,
seems to be doing a lot of things that puppet is already doing for me (such
as checking if services are running and starting them if they aren''t, etc),
so

Real-time web traffic alert notifications (email or SMS) on the cheap?
I''m a big fan of New Relic. One of the services they provide is alerts
when your traffic goes up unexpectedly above a predetermined level.
Does anyone have a favorite, inexpensive "traffic alert" tool that can
be used on a small site--a site that''s not yet big enough for monthly
payments of $150 for New Relic Silver (or even the $36 price tag for New
Relic Silver on

Ubuntu 6.06, wine and ALSA
Hello everybody.
I got some strange problem when running wine with ALSA as sound driver.
For example: when I run mdk2 (I compiled wine myself version 0.9.22 -
newest for now) sound is very noisy and crack'y and I get tons of this
errors:
err:dsound:DSOUND_MixInBuffer length not a multiple of block size, len

Enterprise-class monitoring system for CentOS and Win2k3 server
Can anyone recommend an enterprise-class monitoring system for both
Linux and Windows servers? Here are my requirements:
SNMP trap collection, ability to import custom MIBs
isup/isdown monitoring of ports and daemons
Server health monitors (CPU, Disk, Memory, etc)
SLA reporting with nice graphs
Pager/Email/SMS alerts with groups, filters and escalations
Built-in MTBF and MTTR reporting

SELinux Question
Hi Guys, My google foo is failing me this afternoon. Just configuring a
new C6 install. I know there are SELinux alerts happening, eg: I know I
need to enable named to write to the local .jnl file as part of dynamic
DNS, but sealert -b is not listing any alerts. I can see raw audit
messages. Is there some daemon I have forgotten to start or install?
Thanks

.call file and logging
I am writing a cron script to check if certain
extensions are online and if they aren't then Asterisk
creates a couple of .call files to notify another set
of extensions or external numbers.
It works fine except for logging information.
What I'm doing in the script is setting a "fake"
caller ID (as it's generated by Asterisk, not by a
user) and calling out real users.

[UPS on Serial vs. USB] USB slow to update, serial instant.
When I disconnect my UPS from the wall, I have to wait 15-30 seconds
before the USB drier 'polls' this information and tells me that the UPS is
on battery power (via knutclient or syslog via nut):
ups@p34 POWER ALERT on Fri Jan 26 12:49:29 EST 2007
With a serial connection, I would get the alerts IMMEDIATELY (0.5-1
seconds) after disconnecting the UPS. My new machine does not have a

Alerts when process limits are met
Hi,
I've not found the answer to this question anywhere - please forgive me
if I overlooked.
I'd like to be able to be automatically alerted if process limits are
hit (e.g. max POP3 logins).
Is there a way that I can configure a script to be run, in the same way
that I can with quota warnings?
I can of course use logwatch, but this alerts me the next day, and
logwatch can be noisy
